i dont usually post to youtube vids, but that is one of the coolest things i've seen on here. VERY nice job, its movie quality. Good luck with future enhancements/advancements ~
wow, outstanding job, looks very close to the props that kenny baker was stuck in for who knows how long during the original trilogy, i wonder if there are any privatelt owned r2 props from the original trilogy
I think he meant it is closer to being an actual robot then the one they used on set because the first one was a miget in a costume. His is actully a mechanical device, no miget inside... but yeah I caught that too.
@RewYnd - by combining into a single unit what it took multiple actual props to achieve, e.g., a single unit with both the fire extinguisher and the periscope, which were on different prop units. Also, creating a unit capable to transitioning BACK from three leg mode to two leg mode, which the prop units were never capable of.
That's cool! I have one of those miniature R2-D2 toy robots that responds to voice commands. I wondering if somebody's made a droid that responds to your voice.
In the movie Kenny was in the R2 but technology has come a long way since then. There are still things that R2 did in the movie that the group hasn't finished working all the kinks out on.
In answer to the questions of what these droids "do", they spend almost every weekend back stage at events or helping in some charity event. They do a great deal for the community. To build one you need extra income, your own home in which to build it (lots of space required) and a decent set of tools. To have any of those things you need a job and cant sit in Mommas basement commenting UA-cam all day. Also noted, Most of these builders are already married with families.
This is why I love GEEKS! Who else can take a "puppet" from a movie and make it really work? How about adding some AI so R2 can "hear" questions and respond? Sweet!
you know, vids like this show me how close we're getting to actually having real droids. i mean, these things are HOME-BUILt 0.0 imagine what they'll be doing soon in factories. i swear, if they ever get A.I. working, they'll have the droids to put it into in no time at all.
@RewYnd depends upon the movie ...if it incorporated features in all six movies technecially it could potentially be "more" accurate ie a more complete version because it spans multiple movies.
Hes saying that these "copies" have more funtionality than the ones used for the films. Each one for the film had a different function. These "copies" have almost every function ever seen all in one model. Also models for the movies had Kenny Baker inside of it controlling almost all of the functions. Theres no small guy inside these models, they move through actual robotics rather than Kenny moving it by hand. Therefore they are actually closer to a real Droid than the ones used for the movies.
@michaelhviper No, I don't believe they do. I imagine it costs something to attend or have a vendor table at the Maker's Fair, but the club is free to join. It's a bulliten-board based community. Lots of very friendly and knowlegible people.
Looks awesome. I was a little bit disappointed to know that they were controlled by human, though. Would be even more interesting with a little bit of autonomous capability.
To those that lack any creativity and posted rudimentary comments, some people actually build their desires. Those like you only wish you had some talent. Go back to your video games. Great job on the replicas!! Kick ass work. Keep it up.
wow this is really awesome. The next step here it to make the nozzle sensors on his dome actually move like the movie. Another step after that is to give him a type of AI letting him controll himself
@eleven38 i could of sworn it was a midget and it wasnt just for the shaking. there was problems with the controls in the original R2 and only one thing could operate at a time, so they put him in to turn the head and deploy the middle leg when needed. if you still dont believe me watch the bonus features on the original trilogy.
Where is C3-PO? Is it really a robot if it doesnt operate on it's own? I think this is considered an R/C because it wont do anything without human intervention. Robots are programable, can be left on their own to accomplish a task. Still really cool! Make the arm retreive a 16oz can and I'll control it to the frig to grab a cold drink... :)
Someone already has, although I don't beleive UA-cam will allow me to post a link, but as a member of R2 Builders myself, buying a licensed replica kinda defeats the purpose of building it yourself. Also, the licensed replicas go I think for at least a couple grand, and are non-functional, unlike the R2 in this video. Basically they just sit in your den or living room, where if you build it yourself, you can not only fill it with all these wonderful gadgets, but also mod it too!
I never said there wasn't. You obviously missed the key term, epidemic. I consider that crucial regions to be those deemed by USAID. They have 15 "focus countries", aka those countries suffering an epidemic, none of which are European.
@quagmire8881 And yet, without any of those there would be no clean water running from your tap and no aspirine would be available if you got a(nother) headache...
I've seen the R2D2's that are refrigerators, stereo systems. What a cute little droid!

That's badass! I totally have to do a segment about R2D2 builders in my next video.
When is the next show in San Mateo? I'm near by.

that's awesome :D does it have a Taser rod? =)
I think that's for the "ultimate" droid the host was speaking of. But if you do it, please, PLEASE post a video.

great video, but how much would one of these cost to buy.

Thecnology has advanced to point where we can make and do anything. Thank you thecnology.
Awesome! I wish I had the time/money/talent to do this. R2 rocks!

Join R2 Builders on Yahoo and you can build one yourself!
Yes. Have you tried Amazon?
very nice build. the next step is to make a fully functional C3P0
Wow R2 is really good!
Looks awesome. I was a little bit disappointed to know that they were controlled by human, though. Would be even more interesting with a little bit of autonomous capability.
you need to make him be able to retract his body into place with the legs.

Great job on the replicas!! Kick ass work. Keep it up.
R2D2 is pretty good, but I want to see a fully functional C3PO, now THAT would be impressive.
Super cool!
wow this is really awesome. The next step here it to make the nozzle sensors on his dome actually move like the movie.

Cool stuff
thats actually really good
How is it possible to create a replica that's more accurate than the one in the movie?
R2 is love. :D
Haha that is wonderfull! I've seen a R2-D2 TV projector before, it was friggin sweet but like 5g!
