Man.... I don't know. The good news is that this is of the same quality and nerdy comic-ness as Guardians of the Galaxy, Suicide Squad (The), and Peacemaker. The bad news is... it's exactly like those. To the point where I find them indistinguishable from each other. I realize that that may be a feature for many, not a bug, but I VERY MUCH worry that the rest of his DCU is going to have this same tone. I honestly don't know if James Gunn is capable of anything nuanced or subtle or just purely earnest, like Superman desperately needs to be. Knowing that his superman has Otis and Miss Tessmacher, and some potentially snarky characters, I'm starting to really worry. I one million percent don't want a Superman movie even fractionally with this tone. I am forever grateful to the Russo Bros for rescuing the MCU from the snark of Joss Whedon. Sure, it still had it in spades, but the level, and tone, and smugness of Whedon was stripped out. But Gunn is in charge of the DCU in a way that Whedon never was. I'm really worried...
But taken purely on its own, I think it's fine. I love its willingness to go full comic book, such as the power-armored warriors of the Princess. I loved just how goofy and unapologetic it was about what it was doing... but then... ugh... all the dumb, TIRED foreigner jokes made by them, and that the show is making about them. They all may as well be Festrunk Brothers. ("We are two wild and crazy guys! We love your American foxes!"). This was a stereotype that was boring back in 1978. In a vacuum, this is probably the greatest superhero cartoon ever. But we're not in a vacuum. We're in a universe where we've had decades of intense pop culture humor and genre TV and movies and comics. This all the lowest of low-hanging fruit. Is it good enough to just be regurgitating stuff we've seen before (But never in a superhero cartoon!)?
I honestly don't know if I'm going to keep going with this show. I don't want ever MORE of this. Give us something slightly different, Mr. Gunn..
