The only guys that can win both times are Ronnie and dorian. the rest can be beaten by the guys of today. Phil heath could definitely beat shawn ray.
@TheLusianPopa most of the other guys would beeat shawn ray because they are bigger, bodybuilding has always leaned towards the bigger guys. shawn rhoden would beat shawn ray and most of those who competed in his era because rhoden is bigger and equally conditioned.
also the bodybuilders of the past were all not equally good throughout their era, dorian once had no biceps and was watery and still won olympia.

My father trained with him alot in the 90's. I met him outside bulldog gym in glendora california in 1994 before he and my father trained. Very very humble man. Ill never forget he was sitting on a Kawasaki ninja zx7rr and when he got of the bike to shake my hand he actually stepped down off the motorcycle... Chest as wide as he was tall! And yes growing up in a bodybuilder family watching how things have changed is a shame... The 90's is the pinnacle of the sport.

Ha! Well more humble then my father or I for that matter. For real he was a nice guy. My dad was just top 5 npc national not pro. Very strong though watched my dad bench over 600 many times lean. Pretty sure mr. Ray enjoyed the normal man competition with my dad.

Total class act. I once did a show in Reno, and Shawn was the guest poser. I had won the heavyweight class and got fucked for the overall...losing to the middleweight who had friends at the judges table. Shawn had posed and was just hanging out backstage. I came off the stage not just angry...but dejected! Shawn made it a point to come over to me, patted me on the shoulder, and consoled me by uttering "this was your show."
I can't convey what a positive impact that had on me.

@@thehonesttruth415 Shawn Ray is not like Patrick Moore lol. Patrick has more flaws, plus worse conditioning. Remember, Shawn was one of the most conditioned top bodybuilders ever. Most of the guys from today would stand no chance against the 90s top guys. Roelly, Brandon, Cedric, William, Luke, Ramy, Josh, Steve, Nathan wouldn't beat Flex, Shawn, Kevin, Ronnie, Dorian, Chris, Nasser, Dexter in his prime (all at their best of course).

It's funny how Dorian got so much grief for saying it until Ronnie agreed and Shawn went even further, yet many seem to admire Shawn's directness and honesty.

Bro.. why do you have placing as a determining factor for being in prime??? I mean.. prime is how the body looks at it's best...2003 for ex. was a good year for Dexter perhaps one of the best.. he was better than 99 for sure.. but in 03.. Flex wasn't there, Kevin was 70% from what he used to be in the 90s (especially legs), Dorian wasn't there, Nasser from the 90s wasn't there.. Shawn Ray wasn't there... so of course Dexter moved up few spots but not bcs he looked so much more improved but bcs of the level of competition.. Shawn is right.. what he was saying.... take a Dexter Jackson from 2000-2010 and place him in 97-99 mr Olympia he would still have pbs cracking top 6... the only one who could crack top 6 is Phil Heath 2011-2013 version.. fighting in top 3 for sure..
But Dexter only started placing better because competition got worse, not because his physique improved. I actually thought he looked much better in the late 90s/00s than when he won the O in 2008.

@TheLusianPopa nasser and levrone were almost never conditioned at the olympia, Cormier was decent all around but had no stand out bodyparts, so he'd get outclassed by the more conditioned Blade with the better muscle bellies, and flex on the other hand was full of oil in 98-99, and shouldn't even be a factor.
There wasn't a single mr olympia in the 90's where all of the top 6 peaked. Not a single one including 99, as flex was full of oil, kevin was flat with mediocre conditioning and nasser was far from his 97 self.

I started working out at 14 yes old because of Shawn
Its a lock now. Shawn, Ronnie, FLex, Dorian, Haney all said the exact same thing. Top guys today couldn't crack top 10 in their era. Interesting part is where Ray said the gene pool just isn't there anymore, so we will keep seeing Olympia change hands every 1-2 years. Those guys back then were truly a different breed.
it's the genes but also guys were building muscle the right way. guys would train like 10 years natty and getting into stage condition naturally before trying to go pro with steroids. they had crazy foundation before the anabolics, and used LESS. But now guys rely so heavy on them including insulin to put size on. it is a joke.

Levrone foundation was garbage, was so bad he was known to deflate like a ballon in offseason so he was never good from the back.

Shawn (and everyone else in the show that spoke of this) is right. Guys today are good for their time, but put them up against the 90's and early 2000's line ups, they have no frikken chance. What am I saying? They're not even good for their own time. Bodybuilding has to go back to the top level conditioning and symmetry that may of the 90's legends brought. Look at Samir Bannout when he won! The man's level of conditioning and shape set the standard for next two decades.

Old timers speaking the painful truth. Back in the old days people admire bodybuilders. Nowadays you may ask yourself “what’s the point being that big and can’t run a mile?”
Dexter wasn't in his prime in 99, that was his FIRST olympia !! I saw Dexter on stage in 2008, which was the same year that he won the Olympia. He was wayyy bigger than Shawn by then...and his cuts remained the same. Dex slowly kept adding volume over the years. Not a massive amount but enough to surpass Shawn. One of the biggest knocks on Shawn by the judges was that his physique didn't change much, Dex made small changes, just compare his 2000 Olympia to his 2009 showing and you can see how thick his muscles became.

I’ve heard a lot of comments about Shawn being divisive and starting shit... but he’s not wrong.
If I ever look for inspiration when I’m on prep I always watch the 90’s era on UA-cam to get fired up, I’m 32 I should be looking at the current era, but it doesn’t excite me with the smooth soft physiques! I wish someone like ramy or roelly would just come in peeled one day, cos they’d win!! It’s a no brainier to me!! Unless these stage lights are shit today!!
I disagree. Roelly Winklaar would smoke Milos as long as he kept his midsection in check.
Shawn seems to be forgetting that the 90’s was when flawless, quality gave way to unbridled mass (top 2 at the 94 Olympia is a prime example when he came second to Dorian, who had a freshly torn left Biceps). I got into the sport because of Dorian and will go to my grave believing that he was gifted the 94 and DEFINITELY the ‘97 Olympia. Im a Yates fan through and through.
A slightly more streamlined Roelly would have made top 10 in just about any lineup in the 90s.
I can’t help but notice that they never put Phil or Kai in these scenarios. From the lats down, Kai was as good (if not better) than just about any Mr. Olympia we’ve ever seen. It’s a damn shame his traps, delts, and Triceps could never attain the same depth and wow factor that the rest of his physique had in his prime.
Mr. Flawless.....dude was an amazing poser and ambassador of the sport.
The issue about all this I that peolple don’t understand the meaning about “ different eras”
If u have to play size agains their others to win, then u do that. If u have to have conditioning to win, u do that. There are different strategies to win, and it depends on the competitors

But wait - Dexter WON the Olympia in 2008. So, is Shawn saying that Dexter was not in his prime when he won the Olympia in 2008? That was 12 years ago. I think in the late 90’s Dexter was still building. I don’t think he was in his prime when Shawn was competing. Shawn retired in 2001.

They were better without a doubt. But they had much less obligation. Which allowed them to focus more on their craft rather than distractions.
I think you are forgetting that most of the 90's bodybuilders competed 5-7 times a year. Look it up. Some of them competed up to 9-10 times a year.
Today's Bodybuilders don't have to compete as much because there is more money in the sport and sponsors.
Full Body Joe when ur obligation is to stay in shape then that helps. The obligations are different. Like u said they have to make sponsorship appearances rather than gust posing. The way they make money is different.
@@24kobe243 Going back to your second sentence. When you said Less obligation, you forgot that making a living is The Obligation. The 90's bodybuilders had to compete often to make a living. So that is a Huge obligation.
Today's Bodybuilders do more guests appearances, yes. But even when they do, a lot look bad. The compounds they are taking today will not let them get into as good of shape.

I wonder if they could do a video competition of then and now. At their best same poses just side by side by video from years past if that makes sense
