Alex Rudinger - Slipknot - "Left Behind"

- In the past, I've cited some of the more extreme metal drummers as being big influences to me during my teen years (Kollias, Longstreth, etc), & they no doubt were/are. But like so many of my fellow Metal Drummers out there, it really first started with Joey Jordison & Slipknot. #Slipknot was the gateway band that got me into everything else, & Joey was the first drummer that I truly idolized. In a way I was actually kind of late in becoming a Slipknot fan - 'Vol.3: The Subliminal Verses' came out in 2004, at which time I was 12. In other words: That album came out right around the time I was discovering my passion for drums, & it was hugely inspirational to me.
In short order I went back & listened to 'Iowa' (2001), & the self-titled, 'Slipknot' (1999), quickly becoming just as obsessed with those. I listened to those first Slipknot albums non-stop for a long time, & Joey's drumming was the biggest reason. 'Iowa' specifically became my favorite Slipknot album - there's so much aggression in Joey's playing, Corey Taylor's incredibly sick vocal performance, and just the overall raw grit & anger in the production. That album just absolutely RULES. All of those albums hit me at a very important time in my life - at that age I was so angry, & so unsure of everything. They showed me what a powerful (& positive) outlet Metal could be for people, & they're the first albums that acted as an emotional release from some of those feelings I was having. They had a huge impact on my life & I'm very thankful for them.
Needless to say, I was shocked & deeply saddened when I heard about Joey passing away. We lost a legend way too soon, & a true inspiration to many of us. So this is my tribute to him, one of my fave songs from Iowa, "Left Behind". Forever thankful for all the inspiration he brought me, & I hope he's resting peacefully.
Big thanks to Declan White for the mix here. As mentioned in my last description, Declan's a SICK guy & a SICK engineer. If you're looking for some top-tier mixing, contact Declan via his website (!) -

For the record: While this is by no means the most technical song I've learned/recorded, it was actually really tough! Iowa wasn't tracked to a metronome, so I had to map out my own click. If you could see my session.... Lol, it's basically just a constantly fluctuating tempo (Ha!). Had to add subtle tempo changes every bar (or less) to make a usable click. I think those tempo fluctuations are part of what makes Iowa so aggressive & energetic, so I tried my best to emulate them
Additional thanks to a buddy who will remain anonymous, for providing me with the stems for "Left Behind". I'm not sure that I'm really supposed to have them, so I don't want to get him in trouble (Lol). But without him, this cover/mix wouldn't have been possible. Big thanks to you brotherman (you know who you are!)

I also used my Tama DynaSync pedals here! I still mainly use/endorse ACD, but as a huge nerd I love messing around with gear. The DynaSyncs felt good for this cover, so I used em' (still used an ACD Driveshaft tho!). One of the reasons I love Dennis (owner/inventor of ACD) is because he's very chill about stuff, & doesn't mind if I occasionally use other pedals. It's one of the reasons I made the move from Trick - just to have that freedom (& it helps that ACDs absolutely RULE!). But I own a lot of different pedals, & in general they're my fave piece of gear to mess around with. So you may see me using the DynaSyncs (or somethin' else) from time to time. But for all you gear-nerds out there, the Darwin is still my main pedal!

As always, thanks for watching!
I LOVE how you play all the 8th notes on the hats/crash/chinas so intensely. Very reminiscent of Joey's style. This is an excellent homage to him. RIP
yeah he did that right
The People=Shit drum cam was the reason I got a double pedal when I was younger. Joey probably got more drummers into metal that anyone else, he’s an absolute legend. Insane cover man, you have to be the tightest drummer in the world right now.
Joey is great, but there're so many influential drummers that came before him. For me it was Vinnie Paul.
@@JoeMoss83 it depends on age really I guess, as I grew up with slipknot etc. Cowboys from hell for instance, is as old as me
Joey was the reason for metal but drums was john bonham
Lots of people have had a big influence on metal drumming for sure, but this video is kind of of a tribute to Joey so I think it’s more fitting to talk about his legacy.
Fir me it was the first time I heard Sic that got me into double bass but yes. Joey was the drummer that did it.
Joey did so much for modern metal, truly a pioneer. rest easy legend
The triplet fill at 2:46 is one of Joey's greatest touches imo - it sounds like some sort of locomotive revving up and accelerating
If you hit a bit harder you will break the die-cast hoop from your Lars snare! 🔥
Awesome cover Rüdi! Its SICKK
That snare sounds so friggin good. Some really cool parts in this song! 🤘🤘
yeah it's incredible that it's Lars Ulrich Sig.
@@frank0_drums ya i was worried it was going to have st anger vibes 🤣🤣🤣
@@shawn22992 st anger is best share sound tbh
That signature snare actually is great when the wires are on. I had one for years and I miss the fuck out of it.
This is the best Slipknot drums cover I've seen so far, and there's thousands of them on youtube.
Just Perfect!!!
Perfect 🔥
THX Alex , RIP JOEY , never forget
Alex's Left Behind and Adam Bjork's Disasterpiece might be the best sounding covers of slipknot. Good job man
Nah Eloy Casagrande's cover of the heretic anthem wins
Krimh's covers of Eyeless and Three Nil are pretty great too
Eloy’s people=shit cover is worth mentioning. That’s a beast play through. Ps They are all amazing!
David Diepolds Eeryore is pretty damn amazing too
I had completely forgotten about all those covers, thanks for reminding me about them
Love the attention to detail.

If I am listening to this with eyes closed...I will think that this is Joey👍🤘

slipknot changed my life when I was 14 in 2002 holy fuck
Joey, where ever you fucking are, all of Your music still brings joy and freedom. I love this kind of passion on the faces of drummers around the world playing Your fucking masterpieces over and over again. I have no speech. This cover? 11/10. At least. I love it. Thank You!
Perfekt Cover 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
The best !!! Greetings from Chile, Alex.
This man hit this shit note for note, holy fuck dude way to stay in the pocket. I loved every second.
this is by far the best left behind cover I've ever seen, if not the best slipknot cover period (accuracy wise)
It's like he's working out at the gym more than drumming. Pretty solid and great drumming!!
So aggressive yet so controlled and accurate, perfect metal drumming, just fantastic
That snare tone is fucking amazing
Dude YES, can't believe I'm just now seeing this! 🔥
Sos un capo Alex. Saludos desde Argentina !!!

Awesome performance!!!
first time I see a cover exactly like the original drums
It sounds so different with this mix, I've heard this song a million times and I'm hearing aspects of the recording/production I didn't really notice before. Really glad you got your hands on those stems. That shell finish nutso too
That was an Excellent performance. Totally Awesome
I felt this performance deep in my soul. On the verge of tears and I have goosebumps. Joey did more for me than I even understand and you as an artist are in the same boat for me. I had the pleasure of seeing you play for The Faceless at a summer slaughter tour here in El Paso. Thank you for this and everything else you do. #drumsaresick
