There was a F-16 that was landing at night in Jacksonville, FL that hit a Deer that threw rhe plane sideways and just as he was getting near the end of the runway, he ejected. The plane ended up in the trees, totally destroying the aircraft.

I knew a pilot callsign MANPAD... left his countermeasures on during final approach. Aircraft got into the electronic bubble around the field, and the plane got confused and started blasting out flares. Set a civilian owned field at EOR on fire. Turns out the plane processed all the inputs as a MAN Portable Air Defense system, hence MANPAD.

And not a bad one in the group.

In the late 90s I worked with the Counter Drug Task Force in Arkansas. We had a pilot called Cowboy. Went to a bar and tried to use the ‘pilot’ pick up line. She said if he was where was his flight suit. So he left went to the hotel put it on with a cowboy hat and cowboy boots on as well. The CO was there along with the XO and most of the team. So from that point on he was Cowboy
I remember going through Sears school and there was a lady whose call sign IPOD a lot of us thought it had something to do with the fact that maybe she was constantly listening to her iPod, but later found out from her Wizo, who was also going through that same sere course that it stood for I PUNCH OUT ON DECK which she got when she was going through flight school in Pensacola and accidentally punched out on deck in her T45 trainer aircraft before she even got to the RAG or assigned to her first F/A-18F Squadron

Call signs are a bonding tradition. They are allowed to be funny… I read though that a good call sign would not be chosen by the aviator because they’re a perceived negative. It’s guys giving each other $hit. They can creative as hell though. What surprised me was (1) more than one person can have the same call sign, but not in the same wing and (2) call signs can change and the best way to get a worse call sign is to complain about the one you have.
My dad flew A6 Intruders in the Marine Corps. His first call sign was Hawk but one night at a bar he literally drunk himself under the table. Another pilot, seeing him there, said "What are you doing down there, Goofy?". He was Goofy the rest of his career.

Bimbo - Honestly, his squadron are notorious for "sexually-related" callsign but this guy got the worst out of it. Luckily the high-command came and gave order to this squad to change their callsign to something appropriate. Tummy - Sounds innocent at first. Until you realize that this is a slang for pregnant woman in my country. The owner of this callsign is a woman, ouch. N-word - Literally an N-word. Originally taken from a name of a famous snack. His mates than try to change it up a bit to sound as different as possible and somehow ends up with the N-word. And he was black.....damn.

Best one I ever heard was an A10 pilot with the call sign of Crater. On a training flight, his A10 was loaded with dumb bombs and one came loose, hanging from his wing on take off. Still over the runway were he could control it, so he hit the release to ensure it didn't fall the rest of the way over population. Hence "Crater", the runway was out of use for a few months.

Apparently he found a Japanese prostitute who spoke English and paid her to be his interpreter to get the cab driver to give him a life back to base. @jiska111111111111111 A "dumb bomb" is a bomb with no guidance electronics on it. You release it and it just falls through the air. Think of the WWII bombs. Once they were released from the plane, it hit whatever it hit, no way to guide it toward a specific target.

Saw somebody post a story about one of the greatest call signs ever. This new pilot PCS’d to Japan so the crew welcomed the new guy by bringing him out to a night on the town drinking. When they got back to base, they completely forgot about the newbie. The next morning he was present where he needed to be and they asked him how. Apparently he found a Japanese prostitute who spoke English and paid her to be his interpreter to get the cab driver to give him a life back to base. His name was HAINS: Hooker Assisted Inertial Navigation System. Fucking amazing.
