In the beginning, all Light wanted to do was make the world a better place by wiping criminals and scums of the Earth, but as the series progresses we can see how Light is falling more and more towards his evil side, which is Kira, and as he gets more and more power, he ends up being corrupted and becoming what he once sworn to battle. He was my favorite in the beginning, but now? Light the human died, and The God Of the New World, Kira, rose from the ashes that were once known as Yagami Light. Truly tragic

I think even the reason why Light couldn't help but be interested in "making the world a better place" was that he somehow knew it'd give him an opportunity to show off his power and make him feel superior. It was also flattering to think that he was doing it all for others' sake. I think he wasn't truly interested in wiping the criminals and scums. He didn't want to truly help others. He always seemed a little distant, aloof and unempathetic although he may have had some attachments to some people before being taken over by this greed completely. People often mistake his curiosity for his empathy. Even in the beginning when he killed a couple punks to save that girl getting harassed, he didn't seem to be in a hurry. Someone who felt empathy would be either angry or upset there, and obviously rush things a little. Because that's how empathy works. It evokes similar sensations in our brains and influence our judgement. However, he kinda took his time, and experimented with the situation to test the limits of Death Note because he was calm and logical. This isn't something normal people can pull off so easily. Sure he hesitated at times, but that wasn't because he was a good person. It was because the situation could prove very risky for him. Light is the kind of person who's going to help you when you're in need not because he feels bad for you, but because he knows he'll leave a good mark on you by doing this. He's good at planning for the future. It seems to me that Light always desired power, subconsciously. Only those who desire power can genuinely be corrupt by it, after all. Light was egoistical. He had a tendency to believe that he was special. He thought that only he himself would be the match for what others couldn't accomplish. Light and Kira aren't so different from each other. Light is just the early phase of Kira who's all about greed. They're two sides of the same coin. But light always had that potential to turn into Kira. Because Light wasn't innocent in the first place. His actions might have seemed decent to some at first, but his thoughts weren't pure at the end of the day. The reason why Light couldn't become Kira earlier was that he lacked the power to do so. And perhaps even he was unaware that he wanted to be Kira since he is not the type to waste time dreaming of irrational fantasies. Moreover, he had stuff to do. Suddenly obtaining a godly power naturally caused him to shift priorities. And it seemed like he became someone else while in fact he just got a chance to reveal his true colors and suppressed thoughts. If you ask me, he was a narcissistic sociopath who happened to be a genius at making calculations, disguised as a successful and kind student. He knew how to meet the expectations of his friends and family as a decent child.
I don't agree with this because since the first episode, when Light first met with Ryuk, he already wanted to be a god, the god of the new world. He wasn't inherently good in his intentions of making the world a better place since the beginning but he definitly was consumed by his greed and narcisism during the anime.

So I usually take wiping off people as a "Light" part and becoming God one as "Kira" part.

I am listening to this while reading the chapter 'light'. This made me cry. I never wanted him to get killed. Neither L. I just... I just wanted them to be buddies. I just wanted the world to be a good place, not the perfect one. This is true that without L, the 'world' is just 'word' and without light, the world is dark.

I am listening to this while reading the chapter 'light'. This made me cry. I never wanted him to get killed. Neither L. I just... I just wanted them to be buddies. I just wanted the world to be a good place, not the perfect one. This is true that without L, the 'world' is just 'word' and without light, the world is dark.

For completing his wishes and desires, he started killing a lot of people, especially the so-called 'rotten people' and other innocent people who came in his way. I guess you know what happens after that and all. If you've seen the whole anime, I bet you watched the part where he demolished his ownership of the note. So, have you seen how much changed he was? He was just a intelligent guy who wanted to catch Kira. I wanted this Light to be friends with L, not the one possessed by Kira.
