I felt sorry for Croc in one of his Arkham Asylum interview tapes when he says to Dr Whistler "You got a cure for me then doc? Can you make me normal?" Even though he's still an evil cannibalistic monster you can still feel sorry for him for having to grow up looking like he did and being bullied for it as well as being abused by his alcoholic aunt. It doesn't justify what he does but explains why he does it and how he was driven to it. Not to mention the fact that the longer he lives the worse his condition gets and he becomes more animalistic and less human in both body and mind.
@@billymccrary2246 I got an idea, His backstory. He starts off as a Man with scales and some sharp teeth, simple as that. But he slowly starts evolving. Growing, his teeth getting sharper. Until his devolve into cannibalism and crime.
I love my Croc when he causes havoc in the underworld (where he mutilates his foes to death), but he doesn't like killing innocents, although when he teams up with others and they kill people, he has no problem. Overall I like Croc as a misunderstood Killer who only wants to find his way in either humanity or in his animalistic nature.
Yes, I want more of that! Most readers or movie/cartoon viewers don't realize how deep and interesting Crocs story and character himself really is. More often he is portrayed as a mindless brute, and that's just not who he is. I would like to see future movies and cartoons to explore things like this, maybe even show him as the Hulk of DC, not necessarily as in strength or powers, but as a freak that is feared by society, and may get violent and destructive, but gentle at heart.
Killer Croc is one of Batman's deadliest villains. Croc is not genuinely an evil villain, but is like othed rogues like Mr. Freeze, but it deals with him being judged by others he is a freak to everyone else. I feel bad for Croc, he's just somone who just wants to be alone, but also is helpful, like in the 5th story, he saved the teenage girls from Mad Hatter, that was amazing of Croc. I also like Swamp Thing understands him well, on how he is basically a creature like he is, and needs to be alone, and away from the world. Killer Croc should always be remembered as one of Batman's great rogues, who is not just a freak, but has sympathy due to his appearance by others. Thank you for reviewing the top 5 stories of Killer Croc, have a good day.
See, I've always felt for Croc but only because of his backstory and because he always seems to try and live up to the standards of the other big shit villains but always falls short, yet I never truly understood why I felt so sorry for him because I've read so many stories and seen so many examples In animated shows and games where is just such a calouss monster who shuts out any attempt at affection or help. I've always known that he was supposedly progressively mutating so I just wrote it off as his increasingly bestial nature. However, after seeing this list and hearing your analyzations of these stories I now realized it's a much deep seeded and psychological reason why he is the way he is and I now know why it was that I found him so sympathetic. After being so abused and used even after putting his trust into other just to be screwed over so many times, it makes perfect sense that he would be the way that I've seen him and just shut others out and be so vile toward everyone. That overly damaged wound on his psychological skin mixed with his progressive condition has made it so that ever devolving any sense of trust or affection has become night impossible and even with the mutation aside, who can blame him? It only makes him all that more tragic a character. :(
There is a really good Croc story from detective comics 808-810. It is set after breaking the skin and croc is slowly losing his mind. He goes to a doctor to help him, all while trying to control his urge to kill and eat her. It is another tragic croc story, as Waylon wants to be cured and tries very hard to keep his monster side under control. There is a great moment where he spares a security guard after forcing him to reveal the location of the Doctor. I hope you get the chance to review it one day, as it is a really good Killer Croc story.
Croc isn't a genius like most of the other villains granted but in BTAS he managed to frame Bullock for the supposed murders of 2 petty criminals whose testimonies had helped Bullock jail Croc because he wanted Bullock to feel what he felt being locked up before he killed him. The only episode where Croc's portrayed as dumb is Almost Got Im and that's mostly because Batman knocks out the real Croc early in the episode and impersonates him. He's acting dumb because he knows Joker, Two Face, Ivy and Penguin think Croc's a dumbass so he's just playing that up.
their is one episode where he is a little sympathetic. I forget the name but its where he is running from batman and the police and finds a family of circus freaks who accept him and he feels like he has found a home and people who understand him.
Its because the show was mostly made for kids and they really wouldn't get the sadness of his character, they would just see him like a giant lizzard monster
In Batwoman #21 you get a very good Killer Croc story, narrated by the Croc himself, with plenty of inner monologs. It's short but solid if you like the character it might be worth your time to give it a read.
“I threw a rock at him!” - Killer Croc (who’s actually Batman in disguise) in Batman the Animated Series, “Almost Got Im” “Hit him with a rock!” - Killer Croc in Batman the Animated Series, “Trial”.
3:03 uhhhh.... okay I know thats a Reptile thing among certain lizards with their tails such as geckos but im not sure that that's a crocodile thing...
I've always had a special place for Croc in my mind. What I find crazy is the that a fanscript I'm writing (just for fun) has the mad hatter use croc only for him to eventually hit back. Without this awesome video, I'd never know i could link that back to concepts from the comics
Dang. After hearing this, i think the animated series did him a great injustice. Whenever someone does help him or accept him. He ends up being the one betraying _them._ Both the Arkham series and The Batman series are superior to that.
Great recommendations ! Loved all the selections. I enjoyed Killer Croc in the Hush.storyline. I loved the look Jim Lee devised for Killer Croc. It reminds me of a dragon human hybrid. I also enjoyed Croc being motivated in Hush to commit crimes to obtain a cure for his continued devolution into a savage beast!
4:00. For me, beauty and the beast is a real tear jerker. And I’ve never hated Joker more then at the end of this story, when after finishing his tale, he laughs aloud.
More people should watch this video and track down Killer Croc comics. He is far more nuanced and complex in the comics than he is in cartoons and films.
Croc was considered such a threat in those early days that the Joker brought together, like, twenty villains in order to deal with him. His ultimate plan was to play Croc against Batman and then bring in Two-Face, Killer Mouth, Clayface, and Gentleman Ghost to jump whoever was alive in the end.
Fun trivia: Killer Croc was originally conceived by writer Gerry Conway as a villain for DC's Firestorm. Conway carried the concept over when he switched from writing Firestorm to writing Batman.
Personally, I prefer Killer Croc's more human-esque appearance. It's more interesting and more sad when a character can almost pass for human but their ugly deformity denies them a normal life. It's a lot like Frankenstein's Monster. But when Killer Croc looks more like an actual crocodile, just an anthropomorphic animal, it's not as tragic because they don't look like a hideous human; just a stylistic man-beast.
@John Cobblepot What point? That Killer Croc is supposed to look like a deformed human? Yes, in fact. Croc's backstory is that he was born a human child with an extremely rare genetic defect; a type of atavism that switched on several DNA codes that would otherwise be switched off in the human genome. The result is that Croc acquired primitive characteristics from the early synapsid period of mammalian evolution. Artists who depict Killer Croc as a literal half-crocodile man-beast are either ignorant of his origin story or ignorant of the evolutionary lineage of homo-sapiens.
I bought a collection of killer Croc stories and almost all of these were in it except the one about Hatter. Instead it was another story around the same time about Croc working with a scientist to revert from his dinosaur-like form back to his “guy with a skin condition” form. The ending is so sad.
I think the TAS episode Vendetta was one of the best Killer Croc stories. In this story shows that Killer Croc & Bullock, who are both often used as comic relief, are both very competent. 1st Killer Croc does such a good job trying to destroy Bullock, by framing him. In fact it almost fools Batman. 2nd it shows that Bullock actually went up against a Batman rogue & caught him. Also, since this happened before Batman, so he did it on his own.

I honestly really enjoy killer croc, yeah he is a brute, but I honestly feel for the guy, it's the classic story of the bullied becomes the bully. Plus with the whole scales thing that made his mother not really like him that much, I mean seriously he looks like a monster so everyone hates him
Have you read the "Villains Month" Killer Croc issue? In Batman And Robin#23.4. I love it as much as I do most of the issues here. I think it does a damn fine job of compromising between Killer Croc being sympathetic, violent and ruthless, and not a complete idiot/monster at the same time. By the way, great choice with Requiem for a Croc as a first. Love that one.
It is a good one, I think it really got what elevated Croc above a "big guy" thug character, and it being such a modern comic was nice as well. I should check out more recent depictions of him to see if it carried over.
If only Croc had been born in the Marvel Universe instead. He could've ended up in the Brotherhood of Mutants or maybe...just maybe...Chuck would've found him, gave him the family he always wanted and become an X-Man. Or maybe Apocalypse or Mr. Sinister would've found him first and then hilarity ensues as they tinker on the poor being and make him a Horseman or put him on some other super-villain team.
