Heaps of Macadamia nuts in Australia in the shells because they grow here naturally. All you need is a hammer to crack them and they taste so much better.

I used to get macadamias in their shells occasionally when I lived in Colorado some years ago. Very hard to crack. I would find a sidewalk with a suitable-sized pit in it, put the nut in it, and whack it with a hammer. With practice I got pretty good at it. Then I had no macadamias for a few years.
The next time I tried one, already cracked, I’d become allergic to them.

If you think a macadamia is tough to crack, give it a bottle of whiskey.

I live in Tzaneen South Africa and we have tons of Macadamia farmers and processors here. We buy de-shelled macadamias direct from the factory.

I foolishly planted a Macadamia tree in my yard in Southern California. It grows well here, but the squirrels, parrots, rats and crows all love them. Yes, there are parrots here, and yes, I know they were not indigenous to the region.

I have actually seen macadamia sold in their shells. They come with slits on their shell an a small tool that works like an oyster knife, though with a longer leverage. You can pry it open with a twisting motion
