- Bears are a staple of the Whistler Bike Park. They're so common, that if you visit, it would be weird if you DIDN'T see one. But they're not as tame and gentle as they seem...

"Leave wildlife wild" is the rule I have always gone by. Sure they may look cute or hungry or "its just one treat" but that leads down a dark path quickly and unintentional consequences are a real thing we all need to keep in mind. Glad you posted this vid, it is an important topic for as much time as we spend in their habitat.
It's also why you cannot throw organic stuff out near the highway. People think it's OK to throw half a banana out their car, because it is organic and it's OK. But it invites wildlife to the close vicinity of the road. Plus a bunch of things people throw out take months to properly decompose (e.g. coconut shells) ..
@@denesk2794 crap. I've thrown so many coconut shells out of my car window without a second thought. But no more. Thanks for the tip.
@@JonnyFlash80 I got rid of all mine once my knights found the Grail.
Especially when you give them something to eat they could attack the next person if they dont give them food.
Thanks for the video. Live in Canmore. People running up to bears and interacting/taking pictures up close to them drives me nuts. Fortunately the locals will chew you out for doing it. Some of those bears look way to comfortable.
I hate seeing this as well. We don't need dumb tourists making our bears comfortable around people. It will likely result end up with the bear being relocated forcibly, culled or worst of attacking a human.
I've lost count of the times I've seen a bear at the Nordic Centre. I've also seen tourists urging their kids to get closer to bears in Banff so they can get both in the photo.
Comfortable is a good thing for the most part. Better than in remote parts of Japan where bears just attack as they see humans and just another prey animal as they rarely see humans at all. Those bears actually hunt people.
Yeah peeps. Just not messing with wildlife in general is a good rule of thumb for ANYWHERE. Just let them do their thing and you do your thing.
my thing is stealing bear cubs though
@@guwop2234 Please make sure somebody films you doing your thing.
@@SorenCicchini everyone knows the first thing you do when you see a momma and cubs is grab a bear, that way youll have some leverage over her and she'll leave u alone
I'm glad you mentioned that you got too comfortable around them. You definitely should have either waited much longer or taken a different route past that bear.
Or at least not have slowed down while passing
@@2bfrank657 while literally shouting at it lmao. worst thing he could have done
As a whistler local it sometimes hurts to see how clueless people can be around them. Tourists think they look fluffy and cute and want to cuddle them where as the bear sees you as a meat piñata waiting to be opened
Probably all started with the teddy bear (I also happen to love a cuddly stuffed bear), but every toy store and gift shop sells cute bear stuff. Winnie the Poo, Yogi Bear, etc. Society has portrayed bears as cute and cuddly so people who have never been exposed to wildlife don’t have a clue. Same as when certain tourists get too close to buffalo in a park or a bull elk in Jasper. It’s going to end badly for the human.
what kind of idiot thinks they can cuddle with a bear ? must be americans
Agreed floopy, sometimes it seems that folks shut off their brains the moment they pass through function junction. One of the joys of living in a resort town, I guess.
@@ridinreiners It's not only the toys and tv shows, also in real life, bears also look super cuddly and clumsy all the time when minding their own business. But yeah, wild animals do snap and go rampage and nobody knows when and why.
I had a similar encounter on my bike with a grizzly, riding home from work earlier this summer! It's crazy how time seems to go by simultaneously so quickly and so slowly during a scary encounter!
Such an important video, well done!! I currently live in Jasper and work for Parks Canada, and it's incredible just how dumb people are around bears every day in the National Park. Many of the local bears may be used to humans, but they are still very large and dangerous! Never mind that human interaction and the association between humans and food sources can be incredibly harmful to these beautiful creatures. It's best for both parties that we leave the bears alone as much as possible - keep wildlife wild :)
Shouldn't you like always take bear spray with you, when going in the woods?
Hey Boo Boo, I think I see a Pic-a-nic basket.
I used to live up on blackcomb fist station level working as a snowboard instructor. I remember bears would come to our apartment buildings because some idiots would throw food out of the window. There is a rule a garbage bear is a dead bear..you can get fined 10k or prison even...one day a ski instructor lost one of her children 🤦🏻 the child ended up in a bear den that was luckily empty but mama bear was roaming nearby...she was so lucky...took half a day to find and rescue the child...
Bears do not use the same den twice and when they leave in Spring they leave they don't come back every night.
From the bears' point of view the question is "Why the Whistler Bike Park is Filled with mountain bikers and skiers?"
It’s funny how different the places we live are.
I live in Norway, a bear here is considered something supernatural. My dad has been an outdoorsman for 60 years and never seen one in the wild.
When a bear first is spotted, it is all over local news and maybe national news as there is only like 130 bears here.
I live in Finland and we also have hundreds of bears but they are avoiding people at all costs so you never ever see them
@@tomiphakala Same here in Poland, you know they are there but you only see them on photo traps.
Made a joke to my dad that wildlife could never survive(over exageration) in europe cause of all the human development now think what will happen to africa when they properly develope...the lions are screwed
@@paddor You do have some retarded laws...you hunted wolf to extinction, then tried to reintroduce them...you got 20 and tried to naturalize them...all was fine for 3 years until a woman jogging saw a wolf at the edge of the forest, wolf got scared and run away, news spread like fire, media went spastic and everybody went full retard mode. The gov then past a law that all wolfs should be exterminated again...and you did :)
If I remember correctly BC is the place with the most bears left in the world. Here you can find bears just roaming the streets in North Vancouver and Burnaby or when going hikes in the interior you see one almost every time you just pray you see them in a wide open area.
I am deathly, deathly afraid of bears so I will reconsider ever visiting Whistler!😅 🙈
Great video once again 👍🏼
All they do is eat grass and scratch ass....
What a great video - question for your kind sir. If I don't feed a bear, is it okay to try and ride one? Asking for..... a friend 😉
Only if you put a saddle on it? 😬
You can’t just ride… bear back?
Breaking: Whistler Bike Park filled with mountain bikers. Local bears disturbed.
Pass on that! I’ll stick to snakes and six foot lizards over here
Genius move.... I think I'll slow down and address the bear... HOLY SHIT!!! You got lucky
the bears just want on the channel
I'm a 3rd generation Vancouver Islander. Worked in the bush all my life and I have one piece of advice. Don't f*ck with bears or you might have your scalp chewed right off your head!!! Here's the thing it might be only one in ten thousand encounters but when a bear dislikes someone 10 men won't stop that bear from killing the person it hates. It happened in Renfrew a number of years back, Fort Liard, and at one of the camps outside McMurray. They tried everything to stop the bear in McMurray from hitting it with shovels to throwing heavy drill bits at it and nothing stopped the bear. I personally love bears and have had many encounters with them but I do not mess around with them. Best place to spot bears is between Prince George and McBride!!!
people shouldn't let them approach nor should approach them. but nobody yells or scares them back, so they just see us as an inconvenience or a source of food. only a few of these will NOT be killed. once fed human food, it's game over. the stats across BC are grim.
I'd like to share 🤠bears smell can go for 20 Miles, can run up to 20 mph and jump up trees like cats... I found this out after seeing a 350 lb bear outside of my sister's house
Awesome video! I was wondering about this topic while watching countless whistler MTB videos. Finally somebody shining some light on it! 🤘
Then you come to California where there are many bear attacks … 112 fatal bear attacks in California, and in Canada only 70 fatal bear attacks in 2021
hey bear.
few inches later . . .
HEY BEAR!!! ✌🏽🤙🏽
Wouldnt better to just ride past normal speed? more obvious than staring the bear in its eye that you mean no harm
Do. Not. Feed. Pretty much sums it all up, here. Love wildlife, but, just not worth having a dinner plate sized paw with knives attached swatting at you because you thought it was "selfie time".
Thank you for shouting out the Squamish Nation's territory.
Man bears are so cute I just wish they wouldn’t possibly kill you
I've always wanted to cook a pizza for a beer
I came within 6 feet of a massive buck moose during rutting season as a little kid. One of the most terrifying moments of my life. To this day, I'm always on edge when riding alone in the woods.
A moose is far more dangerous than a bear! They can be real cranky.
A moose is very dangerous during rutting season. You're lucky you encountered him as a child when he'd almost certainly recognize you as an infant and thus no threat. An adult male would have had a much higher chance of being charged.
@@karlnurmi3530 I'd certainly agree that a bull moose or a cow with calf is more dangerous than a black bear. But if I had to face either a moose or grizzly at less than forty meters I'm going to choose the moose hands down every time, rutting season or not.
@@dscott6629 No grizzlies in Northern Ontario thank god. I’ve only encountered them in the Yukon and I agree with you 100%!
WOW, it's like that at Whistler? Scary!
Has there been any bear attacks on riders since Whistler opened?
Even with the smaller black bears we have in PA, I *always* change course when I come across one. Better safe than sorry. 🤨
I am from Russia, in a closed city located in the Siberian Taiga, we are building a track in our small mountains that are near the border of the city, there are quite a few brown bears around who go to private houses to find food. Mushroom pickers say that bears do not come to the mountains, except for one she-bear who is fed by mushroom pickers 7 kilometers further so that she does not go further. But I'm still scared, just in case I carry pepper spray, but it's not a fact that it will help if they want to eat you. Thank you for bringing up such an important topic!
I mountain bike in Melbourne, which is down under. There is a trail system is located only 45 minutes away from the city called the You Yangs. I imagine Whistler to bears is the same as the You Yangs to Kangaroos. We usually just ride past them, and spot them quite often. We never feed them, and we respect their privacy, which leads to a healthy amount of wildlife to a park. I like it.
At whisler i almost hit a bear on crank it up it was just as scared as i was
Thank you SO much for this reminder! Bears are wild animals…let them stay free and wild!❤️
…. And we all taste like chicken to a Bear..!!!
Does Whistler require bikers to carry bear spray? In Alberta it's required on some trails and strongly recommended on the rest.
Was just there and no, they don’t.
I don't think it's not dangerous. Bears are my ultimate nightmare scenario. And I live in Costa Rica where I meet venomous snakes, mountain lions. Got bitten by a Tarantula Hawk (no, that's not a tarantula, it's a kind of wasp, google it ... ) , several scorpions and stepped on stingrays 2 times.... Back in Europe I have met wild hogs with their babies ... that's also a run or die scenario :O
Yet, if I think about meeting a bear and I want to poop myself....
Also.... you know also what is really dangerous? Cows and bulls. And we have a lot of them loose where I live.
I don’t live over there but I went on vacation there and I can confirm that bulls and cows are everywhere. I went to Costa Rica for the diverse reptile species. I only ended up seeing spiny tail iguanas, tree frogs, basilisks, and one dead fer de lance.
Aren’t cows pretty slow
@@l21n18 normally but they can turn on the jets when they want
Eric, what is your neck brace of choice ?
Beary good video. 🐻
Iv seen a few bears in BC bike parks but not in Whistler yet, last year one went through my camp site at the riverside rv resort, I was woken up to my minivan shaking and I could hear clawing on the van, I had my side windows open a bit and it was to dark to see but know if that bear wants in its coming into my van with me in it. Luckily for me the bear disappeared
I was here June this year and saw three of them in 1,5 hours. Sad thing was that on top of Whistler Mountain one bear showed up just meters away from us at the restaurant and only had eye for the trash bins.
About the same time in may I rarely see a bear in northeast Pennsylvania.just across the lake where I live about 300 meters away the bear heard me say "holy sh!t that's a bear" it looked up at me curious then kept prancing in the field looking for something to eat .it's concerning for the community but as long as you give them space and do not harm to them they are wonderful creatures to look at.
my country Croatia have big population of Brown Bear, especially in Velebit mountain area where I like to ride a bike...so far didn`t came across bear but legend say bear will retreat into the woods if he hear your voice od noise you make,...
Yo the lowest yet highest pitch of ur voice ever was hey!!!!!! Bear.......and as I think about it I've also encountered bear up in PA Pocono trails and also yelled hey bear!!! Loud and clapped and it bolted.
keep doing the content love your vids
Well, bears in bikepark its a great thing.when it chasing, you gonna ride fast, means how bike park create the speed pro rider.Have fun out there guys.
Whisler, where bears come to lunch. Today's menu: Sporty cyclists, marinated. Ordinary cyclist, plain. Hikers female, with herbs.
2:25 * just watched "The Revenant" * Correction. NOT cool.
Seriously, sighting a bear is one thing. Sighting a bear with it's cubs ..... I just don't want to be caught in between them.
Wow, I only face the dreaded box turtle or squirrel on my rides!
I was riding Spirit Mountain in MN and came across a bear and three cubs on the black trail. Got out clean as she just turned to look at me as I back tracked but it was an experience. First ever close range bear encounter...Should we be carrying bear spray on our bikes?
yes
45 ACP works too.
Went riding for the first time with my paps in MN. We carry bear spray and a pew pew device.
@@yodaddamilkman8422 where do you put your gun while riding that you know you wont land on it when you fall?? 🤨

We the community de UA-cam, From this moving picture shall now forth pronounce de BCPOV as Bear Charge Point Of View.
Why do mountain bikers refuse to put sound devices like horns or bells on their bikes? Using these would alert the bears to your presence.
Instead of "Going Slowly" you should have walked slowly walking your bike and speaking to the bear in a non threatening tone.
Good examples of him and his wife getting WAY TOO CLOSE to bears for no reason. Don't be this guy, walking past that one when he could have gone around was extremely stupid. Don't desensitize bears to humans, its bad for both parties. Most people wouldn't risk walking that close to a stray dog on the street so why do it with a wild animal?
Bears in Canada have no fear of man !
Because of gun restrictions ,
bear spray only makes them mad !
This is what you get when people continually anthropomorphise animals, (including dogs) Bears, sharks, big cats etc..aaaaw so cute. No. Please stop.
I have bears in my area, I bike too. If your biking just fly by and dont go slow like you just did. Especially dont do that with a mama with Cubs. Fly by and keep your distance. You slowing down and stopping on your bike makes you look like a predator to them.
Great reminder with Crankworx just around the corner. I was shocked to not even see a sign of a bear at Sun Peaks last weekend because 3 weeks prior at the Harper Mt Enduro we did. Cheers guys!
"This video was created on the traditional territory of the squamish nation"
Is this some sort of requirment nowadays? Since George Floyd, you see it everywhere.
Don't forget the rapidly growing grizzly population in Squamish as well.
That lady sitting on the bench and The Bear sniffing, she’s lucky The Bear did not smell anything she wanted to eat. I’m sure she’s telling story about A Bear walking up and sniffing her. It wasn’t the lady’s time yet.
Something to look forward to when I make my first trip to Whistler. Great video!
Solid PSA... Great work!
Rare attacks 😂😂😂 these animals can weigh up to a thousand pounds even a black bear please don't encourage people to be within 100 ft of these creatures it won't end well
Thx for video. Black bears are chill. See them everyday & haven’t had an issue. Just let them be
Why did you slow down and talk to the bear? He probably thought you were insulting him, they are very sensitive!
You can't outrun a bear on your bicycle.. is something to keep in mind
Anyone knows the song from 5:32 on, it's really beautiful...
Because they were here before us 😂
It probably only charged becouse you slowed way down and interected with it. Just leave them be
One time when I went on b-line there was a bear in the middle of the trail
Couldn't believe I wasn't subscribed! Cool to see you and Yuka up in AK! We sure have our fair share of bear encounters, it can get the heartrate up for sure!
i mean the first rule for handling bears is to stay quite and still so riding past shouting at it is pretty dumb. give it some bloody space next time. remember you are visiting its home and not the other way around.
the stupid agro drivers between squamish and whistler are far more dangerous than the bears. i'm out.
You guys should ride thorn hill in maple ridge near Abbotsford.
You're videos are top notch...u inspire me to make better videos with excellent audio.
Audio is often more important than video! (sorry for the late reply!)
The bears in Whistler are looking sad cause they will never be able to ride an MTB downhill.
Great video. I was at Whistler all last week and saw many bears... Luckily from a comfortable distance.
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: what was the status of your undies after the encounter?
Maybe they prey on crashed bikers. That is how nature keeps clean.
Thank you so much for producing this and helping spread the word.
yo bcpov i have an idea for a ___m/k special do a sumer of biking in europe mabby
More bikers with false sense of confidence and skill die on a line compared to bear attacks I bet.
@2:25…the brown stain on the back of your pants is appropriate!
I like Bears, but they are clearly dangerous.
grizzly bears are the scary ones, as they are not timid at all, and they want to kill
I wonder if I yell "strava" if they will get out of my way on the trail.
Yeah nah.. I’m dead scared of bears
Some people just haven't watched the revenant yet.
Nice to enjoy not good to encourage, nice home video thanks 🙏
How about the death of a human too….it’s ok to say it, so that idiots won’t get so close…
On my ten trips I’ve only seen a snake nine times
I grew up in south eastern BC and people not having a healthy level of fear when it comes to bears blows my mind. They can easily kill you.
So what ya gonna die of something
I`ve been to Whistler many many times and never saw a bear once.
