Somewhere, somehow, I can hear James May saying: "Philistine"
lol spot on
haha, AWESOME comment, I was was thinking about James May and his RR Corniche
He would be probably still complaining about it.

People should get over the fact that certain things are not really worth restoring. Someone has the tech and the dollars to rebuild parts by hands and then ends up with a rebuilt car, not an
original one. Most of the owners, however, just let the car rot somewhere. Probably, all of us have links to videos of abandoned expensive cars on the screen. This chap preserved the beauty, which is mostly in the design, and changed the crap engine with a new serviceable one, plus put decent brakes just in case. I hate more to see those blokes with an unfinished project in the garage for decades because they are "waiting to find that impossible part". To me it is a rescued Rolls, not a ruined one... Just my opinion: great job.
The owner's brother was the leader of Britain's Rolls owner club. It was built to thumb his nose at him and his pretentious ways. Lol
Yeah but this car is just much better than the original one. And still look cool 😎

the heart wants, what the heart wants.some have a hardon for the wants of others.
If there were only a few left on the planet that would be one thing, but there are plenty of the originals still out there, I just found about ten for sale on one site.
I love when Jay is asked what car he would get as a Derelict, he almost wanted to say "none" haha
I don't think that's right... I think he likes the whole sleeper idea, but his fondness for nostalgia *easily* trumps that, so anything at all that reminds him of those "simpler times" he tends to treat with the utmost respect and care. I don't think he could get a Derelict of on of those old cars that he likes, or that he had any personal attachment to/memories of because he would just want to restore it to new. I don't think Jay realizes, even today, that what he's been doing in this show has been searching for the cars that give him the greatest sense of nostalgia. He mentions this in some episodes, wondering if he likes old cars for what they are, or if he's just after that feel of nostalgia, and I think it's the latter. You can tell because he *exclusively* values original and period correct dashboards and definitely prefers original bodies, however there have been tastefully modified bodies he's liked as well (so long as they were done in period styling, of course).
I worked at my local grocery store as a young teen, and remember an older man, a local, who had a small selection of antique cars, which included a 58' RR Silver Cloud. Had quite a few conversations with him while pushing shopping carts. Very special car! Haven't seen him or his cars around town in a long while, I assume he's passed on. Hope his sweet cars are in good hands!
This is sheer genius. Got a brother who loves the sleepers. Me, not soo much, but this immediately brings a smile to my face, just the disbelief that anyone would take an old Rolls and make a sleeper out of it, then to go out and put it to the test. Oh, the thrill !!!
Does anyone else think that Jay seems somewhat not impressed before it's driven? Since he's such a proponent of stock or as close to stock as possible. Love this show!!!
Yes well everybody seems to have have an LS motor in everything in 10 years is there going to be anything left that doesn't whether it's a GM product or not collectability will be gone and someone will come up with the next big thing and then they will all be Obsolete and they won't even have original Motors they will be obsolete I would rather have a 69 Camaro with a stock motor no matter what it was then have an LS in it it's real
@@chuckealey1134 ok boomer
I was thinking that by the look on his face. I for one think a car should be restored to be original. I was disappointed at the Kaiser video because it was turned in to a rod.
Well to me, a lot of the charm in a classic car or anything else comes from that it's doing it's job for filling some role (whether it's to drive nice, to be reliable, to look cool, whatever) in it's original spec. When you take that away, and you just have a classic shell on something like this, a good portion of that charm is gone. It just isn't what that car's about. I don't think I'd say that about most other true luxury cars like this, but a Rolls Royce? Not digging it. And I think Jay shares that opinion.
Being impressed isn't what thus build is about. You're looking at it wrong.
Jay wasn't impressed until he drove it lol! His grin
That’s impressive. I’m not much of a Chevy guy, but every time Jay got on it, I couldn’t help but smile. I love the whole execution, just awesome! Very well done! Thanks for sharing.
This is why I watch *"Jay Leno's Garage,"* and why I enjoy his show. Thanks for the show, Jay. Keep up the good work! :)
Yes Jay appreciates all autos..small big expensive and budget cars and bikes. Every car has something unique and a back story and he appreciates that ...there is no negativity in his channel. He makes every car look good and that makes happy watching
I agree. I'm not a fan of *every* car he shows on his videos. But I do enjoy a lot of the cars he shows. This is one of those cars. :)

This is what Rolls Royce should be making today. maybe a little updated in places, but keep the same body shape. Iconic.
They'd rather make blobs instead
The Germans own RR Cars now days, RR Britain only make Jet and Rocket engines
We need Jay back on late night TV.
i love how jay went straight to the breaks.
The brake lines hanging 1 inch off the ground is not cool.
i know and he also doesn't like brembo's thats why he always asks people about there breaks, he's a wilwood man.
I think I'll put a RR 6.75 liter into a Corvette just to restore balance to the universe. 🤔
i agree with you
Hardly proper, sir.
Yes, please do that, balance needs to be restored
BRILLIANT
Stick a modern Phantom V12 in a '63 split window, that would redefine the word "why"
I love how Jay doesn’t seem to appreciate this car at all
most unimpressed
Did you the guy's face when Jay prefers the British original's wheels? Jay isn't impressed with this builder but it is a great video.
Idk, to me it seems like he really enjoyed it.
Well j mostly restores not strip and restomod..
J likes classics as they are true to his believe
While i like to see older cars restored to all original specs when possible. Modding a car like this is a real treat to see and hear. I like what this company is doing and maybe some day i will see their work on the roads of California while im on vacation.

So glad it is not some boring modern vehicle, which is a waste of talent, a true sleeper! Great show, can't wait to see the next one, thanks.
I *love* the Icon Derelicts!!!! Every one of them is amazing!!
Huge fan of Icon and of Jay, seeing this come together again is awesome.
"I should probably do a spring retainer to hold that up." Well spotted, Jay!
Finally a Rolls-Royce with “ adequate” power. Jonathan Ward is a freaking god I tell you what.
Just love the whole concept of that graceful, stately old Rolls, with an LS7 and sports suspension...love Derelict
Another very enjoyable episode. Thanks for these. I wish more factual tv could be of this style, laid back, good humoured with loads of interesting information from a genuine enthusiast without being preachy or didactic.
Thank you for walking the talk guys, two men living through the heart of a child,!!! Enjoy
What a superb car, not only a Rolls-Royce (well, bodywise anyway) but what a soundtrack!
Could listen to this all day!
Fantastic, love it!
Jay doesn't seem enthused. He was more excited about the 41 Plymouth he has
He really seems to be giving the guy a bit of a hard time in the first part, but I guess he's just trying to establish exactly what they've done...
Good friends with the owner of this Rolls, can't wait til it arrives back here in Aus, hats off to Icon and Justin for this insane project !
finally, a reply that deserves thanks
I was wondering about the VIC plates
It seems to have UK plates on her now..
I'm ok with keeping the patina, but NOT the rust holes. If it's done right the rust can be fixed and still look old.
my thoughts
Plus, knowing Australia(live here), it won't pass the rego check or road worthy, with rust holes! It's the first I've heard of having to keep part of the original chassis. Have heard of many cars being restored here, with completely remade chassis, as the original was rusted out.
Agree. Not on a Rolls. If it was old Volvo, yeah maybe rust and hols, etc...
this is the worst
Hence the moniker"derelict".
I've always thought the Silver Clouds were the most beautiful cars ever made. My fantasy project is to do basically this, except with a Lexus drivetrain and suspension to keep the luxury drive intact. Thanks for sharing this!
1uz or 3uz?
That car made me laugh and smile more than any one in recient memory. Great job
Icon are my favorite builders. Everything they do is just perfect. I would happily hand them my cash and have them to go nuts and surprise me.
I think this car is rad as hell
My ultimate Derelict car would be a 1968 Cadillac Eldorado. But I would insist on retaining the quirky front wheel drive layout, just to give Jonathan a few extra grey hairs.
It's so funny to see and hear it accelerate. It's like, WHAT?
Yeh.. 'chirps' between gears. Yawn. Needs a turbocharger.
Finally, a Rolls I would like to own.
Jay had a bigger smile with this than most cars, so good job Icon.
I would love to see Jay do an episode on his Vipers, especially his original 92 RT/10
This thing is too low rent for Jay. He's got a 1934 rolls with a Merlin engine in it. That's Jay Leno.
Do you have any idea how much these ICON builds cost? $250k is my guess.

This car sounds AMAZING!
This Jonathan Ward fellow is some kind of comedian himself. I like this guy.
Some harsh criticism followed by a car builders dream.... Jay Leno's approval!
Love the sound of it.

Rare to see a car with VIC number plates on LA roads!
i just noticed that, i was so confused

Jay,The year was 1975 and I was living in Germany, as my father was an enlisted soldier stationed in Karlsruhe. He was ordered to Korea, which at the time was an unaccompanied tour, meaning the family had to stay behind. In those days, if the military member was not present, the family was not allowed to continue to reside on post, so we were forced to move away from housing. We wound up renting a small (very small. I never realized just how small until subsequent visits in later years) third-story apartment from a man and his family that lived in and owned the building. That man was to become a surrogate father to me and the reason behind my passion for automobiles. To describe him as a gentle soul would be lacking in appropriate detail, as he (and his entire family) enveloped us during a very difficult time and went out of his way to treat me like a second son.
Herr Kuhn always had an older model BMW in his driveway. Typically a base model, always four-door, usually white and always a manual transmission. My first ride with him was in a BMW 2000, and yes, it was a white, four-door manual. I was hooked. In every visit made to his house in later years, there was always some variant of BMW, and regardless of how long it had been between visits, he always instantly recognized me. There was great comfort in knowing that no matter when I would visit, that would always remain constant.
In my last visit to him, I had my own son with me. Although Herr Kuhn was moving up in years, he had lost none of his joy and kindness. He insisted on taking my son and me to his BMW Motorcycle and Auto club meeting hall, where he gifted my son with numerous items, to include a shirt my son wore for several years before outgrowing it. It was a magic moment for me, and it brought back all of the reasons I simply adored this man. He was one of the few people I openly wept over when I got the news he had passed away.
My “Derelict” inspired car? It’d have to be either an E12 or E28 BMW 5-Series (preferably white!) with a manual transmission as a tribute to the man who took my family in as his own all those decades ago. I’d keep it as bone-stock in appearance on the outside and interior as possible, down to the scratches and imperfections such a car of that age would likely possess. However, underneath would beat the stirring soul of Munich’s finest M-sport running gear (to keep it as pure as possible), along with upgraded handling and braking capabilities. Much like Herr Kuhn, while age would be visible on the outside, youthful spirit, grace and power would flow from inside.
It’s never to happen, as being an Army civilian currently assigned overseas somewhere in the Middle East and having just recently adopted my niece (now daughter) from a troubled upbringing, such discretionary income is not available…and what I do have left over after my other obligations goes to providing the best possible life for a girl who has had more happen to her in her first ten years than should ever happen to anybody. But being able to sit here today and pause to remember him has been a tonic for the senses, erasing 40 years of time and washing away the brown dust and dirt I am currently surrounded by.
Read the whole thing and I cried myself after reading it. Try online websites for cheap models and restore it rather than buying a fully complete one, that should keep costs low. And just research for the most perfect engine you can find. Believe me, for nostalgic memories like this one, the sound of the engine with the look would be the best thing. And if I get an option to buy any classic car, then i would go for a Porsche 911 reimagined by Singer and Williams because a relative had a picture of the real one as it was his dream car, and even i cried when he passed away. So as a result i wanted it to be the classic car with modern tech to remind me of him.
Beautiful story! FYI, when you get back stateside, you can get older BMWs very cheap on the east coast, particularly around Washington DC. Huge enthusiast community dedicated do moding or restoring e12s and e28s too.
Beautiful story. Very well written and encapsulating. You should look into publishing some stories to earn side money for that dream BMW.
What a read!
I hope you get to fulfill your dream one day and that the feeling is even better than what you imagine it to be.
You should buy an old BMW and do whatever work you can on the side, I‘m sure it will bring great joy and memories.
Even though I‘m not from the US, I thank you for your service, as you not only protect your people but those of of other western countries as well.
Your priorities are correct. Saving a child is, in the end, more important than a car. When she is grown up, you will have earned your right to indulge your car lust.
wow, old vintage rolls comes with latest technology.....i love it!!!!!
Chang, that push rod, 2v 90deg v8 engine is a 60year old design. Get up to speed mate. 90deg firing order = enherently unbalanced and needs huge counterweights in the crank.
A modern RR engine is Turbocharged, 4V DOHC VVT design.
this is one the best cars, and test drives youve done on the show. thanks jay.

Building a car to Australian design rules ,Respect! Our registration laws are second only to Germanys TuV in terms of complexity and ludditeism . Especially Victorians . Also getting a car imported that has been modified overseas often cannot be registered if the mods were done after 1986. I did say the rules are stupid?
Yeah, having safe vehicles that don't blow up and endanger you and other people is terrible, you're right
Yes the fun nazis suck. And if the car is modified before 1989 and you have proof you can usually register it if it's a street car.
I nave been messing with cars for close on 50 years > remember when Australias different states bought in a lot of the laws which were actually copied from Iowa in the US . A lot of small businesses closed up shop as car owners were not allowed to run dual carbs, fourspeed gear boxes, bigger brakes etc .it took close on 30 years of lobbying MPs to get things like the TAC accepted . it had zero to do with vehicle safety and everything to do with politics. As an example..seat belts. For some strange reason, only Australian approved seat belts are allowed in Australia. Cars coming in from overseas cannot use 'foreign seat belts'. Air suspension? Queensland banned it until it was pondered out that almost every semi running on the roads, plus all the suburban trans have air suspension . And on it goes.
Which is pretty weird when you see car like this Roller have the very latest in chassis concepts and a car modified in the 1980's will have 30 or older tech and parts.
Exactly. This country is fucking backwards mate I tell ya that. Todays technology and computer engineered designed parts and metallurgy is far superior than what was around prior to 1989. It should be the other way around you would think.
I like how Jay is extremely tactful with everything especially down to his lift giving shout outs all over !👍 Steraconey lift
