  • In this video, I show you how you could fix a broken heater fan in a Renault Zoe. If your fan is not working, this is likely to be the fix and it can be done yourself with basic tools, saving hundreds of pounds. I've seen this job cost £500 at dealers. You could fix it yourself for about £100 and in about half an hour.
    The fan controller (resistor pack) is part no. 271500017R and at time of making this video (Jan 2022) costs £85.11+VAT from a UK Renault dealer.

    Sympathetic chuckling here when you cut to the car in bits... Even before you said it, I thought "oh dear, that didn't go well!" Not many chaps would have stopped to think about who they could help at that moment. You're a good bloke Matt, that must have been really frustrating but you made something useful for us out of it. We'll done and cheers. 👍 😊

    This happened to my Zoe too. Replaced the resistor, but still not working. Took out the bottom right 10 Amp fuse that controls the fan and locked car for 10 min and the fans work again. Quite fiddly to replace the resistor. Using my iPhone in Video mode with flash on helped a lot to locate everything.

    So, clear and well put together video which I watched multiple times and checked my symptoms were identical to the description, but when I replaced the part it didn't fix the problem. So - probably worth doing but it's cost me some $$ (I'm in Australia) and time an am no further forward. I'll get an auto electrician involved now.

    Thank you very much Matt. I had exactly the same problem and fixed it the same way by replacing the resistor unit. Just don’t do what I did and mix the old and new ones up and have to do it all again! However it was worth it to find out that the old one was getting extremely hot after a very short time connected - the cooling fins were too hot to touch. If that is happening to yours after just a minute, a sure sign it needs replacing.

    Yeah, it was the same on my Vauxhall Cavalier. The fan would stop working because the diode in the "resistor" module had blown. I was told that it was a common job at the Vauxhall dealers. I bought some diodes and replaced the diode. Cost was about £1. I did that job a few times over the 8 years I ran the Cavalier.

    • @GoGreenAutos

      Yes I'd heard this is common on others older cars. But I was also told that the Zoe didn't have a resistor module...hence why I went looking for the fan.

    And they still use resistor packs on modern cars? I thought that is now today all controlled by electronics and pwm or similar ...

    • @GoGreenAutos

      Heater problems in the Zoe is normally due to low refrigerant. The heat pump uses the air conditioning compressor and really you need to regass the cars about every 3 years. See www.gogreenautos.co.uk/how-tos/renault-zoe-heater-not-working

    Hi! Great videos! My issue is vibration starting from the 3rd speed of the fan. I am assuming that it is coming from the blower. You don’t have any videos on how to remove the blower right?

    A somewhat related question: a spinning noise has randomly appeared when the heater fan is on. I can hear it quite clearly from outside where the air intake is below the windscreen. Is there any what to get to this to see if anything is stuck in there? It‘s not a problem (yet) but just annoying.

    Great video! However after I replaced the resistor pack with a brand new one, the fan still doesn't work. I measured the input voltage on the fan and it gets proper voltage which correctly vary when I adjust the fan speed up or down on the dash. Do you have any hint where to continue the troubleshooting?

    • @GoGreenAutos
      @GoGreenAutos  Рік тому

      Sounds like you need a new fan motor then.

    • @gyulabakonyi8726

      UPDATE: I removed the blower unit. The fan actually wasn't faulty. During a bench test, I connected it to a spare 12V battery and it worked perfectly fine. I cleaned the commutator with contact cleaner and reconnected the unit to the car. First just hooked up to the input wire and started the car and voila the blower was working perfectly!
      The removal had been complex, but the refitting was a mega-nightmare! I worked on a righthand drive Zoe. This car is the 'pinnacle' of French engineering. You can barely remove the blower but ultimately it comes out. When you try to refit, it doesn't go back, because the rim of the blower housing stuck into a massive steel plate which belongs to the steering column. I did not mess around with that part, because it looked to be responsible to adjust the distance of the steering wheel. Therefore I removed approximately 1-2mm material from the blower unit's plastic housing where it couldn't get through. Finally after a 2-3 hrs of struggling the blower was back in place and the car is nicely warm again.
      TIP: Use a socket wrench with a flexible adaptor. Also try to use a socket wrench which doesn't come off, because most of the time you will work blindly and the last thing you want is to drop a wrench into the abyss of the interior parts.

      Hi Gyula, looks like I am similar to you - I replaced the resistor pack and it hasn't fixed the problem. Did you fix this in the end and any tips for a next step in diagnosis.

    • @gyulabakonyi8726
      @gyulabakonyi8726 Рік тому +1

      @@barrydarnell5879 hi Berry, I started with the resistor pack because that seemed easier to access and replace, also did not cost too much. After it didn't resolved the problem, I had to remove the entire blower unit. Removing is difficult but doable, but reinstalling is a nearly impossible due to the bulky design of the blower unit as well as a massive metal component of the steering mechanism which is exactly in the way. So, I simply cut off a bit of the plastic casing of the blower unit and it allowed me to rotate it back in place. Before reinstalling, I connected the blower to a 12V battery to test it. I hope it helps.

    Great video Matt. Our 2015 Zoe (22kWh Q210) has recently developed quite a noisy compressor / heat pump which is very audible when driving and you can feel a bit of vibration through the steering from it. All the heating and cooling appear to be working fine at the moment but I wondered if you know if this is a symptom of something about to fail or a sign it needs some maintenance? I know the Zoes are loud when the heating/cooling is running at full whack but it doesn’t seem to ramp down to a quieter level anymore.

    • @GoGreenAutos
      @GoGreenAutos  2 роки тому +1

      Get it regassed ASAP. It should be done every 3-4 years. You may find you need a new compressor at some point in the future, but a regass now may just catch it.

    The heater resistor pack on cars in general can fail because the lubricant on the heater motor bearings has dried out. Often the resistor pack has a safety component that fails due to this and fan then only works on max setting. Expensive job at dealers, can be done by owner, it's simple but awkward, you may have to use bad language on it!
