As a woman who is the mother of two young boys (11 and 7), I actually think it’s important for them to be “exposed” to tiny bikinis. I want them to understand that it’s normal for a woman to wear a bathing suit at the beach. I want them to understand that having a body is not an invitation to sexualize people.

Eff anyone who says women shouldn't wear what they want because men might "stumble." As a r*pe survivor and someone who has dealt with so much sexual harassment, even in ugly work uniforms, it has nothing to do with how modest you are. It's 100% on the abuser/attacker/harasser/whoever

    • @NoName-fo2je
      @NoName-fo2je Рік тому +50

Yessss, also as a rape survivor I can second this. It doesn’t matter what you wear or what you do, it will always be the abuser, that’s their shit not yours or anyone’s. But also every place and time has different modesty standards so what do we even go off of: like if we went back to 1930 America they would think all of us were inappropriate and most certainly immodest. I literally got raped in baggy sweat pants with an even baggier T-shirt, another time I was wearing a Snuggie. It’s disgusting to me how women especially are shamed for clothing and blamed for these atrocities committed onto them(like I can’t even think of something more effed and backwards). I am so sorry that happened to you I’m glad you know it wasn’t your fault, it will always be the abuser/perpetrators. I hope you have a beautiful life full of joy, healing and everlasting love!

    @TheAwesomes2104 Рік тому +328

Crazy to me how they're like "Be submissive to your husband. The man is the leader. God gave him wisdom and toughness to lead!" But at the same time like "Yeah, men are so mentally weak and easily manipulated that if you even just exist comfortably in your own body, it'll cause them to sin because they simply can't control their own minds."
Also, this whole thing about being true to the Bible and teachings of Jesus, but completely ignoring that. Jesus said that if your eye causes you to sin, you pluck it out. Their own deity literally instructed that if a man sins because he sees something that makes him less after a woman, to pluck out his eyeballs, not blame the woman and tell her to cover up and make him stop sinning.

Literally been a thing for hundreds of years. There's SO many texts from the witchcraze era that very clearly state that women are extremely emotionally intelligent and can twist men around their fingers. When I was 20, on a hot Italian summer day, minding my own business, a lady stopped me while walking down the street. I was wearing shorts and a tank top. She was probably 70-75. She stopped me to tell me that I looked amazing in those clothes and that if she was my age she would wear the exact same. She said that when she was young they were not allowed to go out dressed like that but she wished they could, and that if another “old witch” told me otherwise to just know they were simply jealous. I’m 30 now and still remember that encounter. That’s the energy I want to see in the older generations and I hope to be that supportive when I’m that age.

I agree as long as it’s adults. The only merit to this conversation comes when we talk about minors and even how social media influencers (on child or teen friendly sites) are essentially creating soft core porn and labeling it as “body positivity”. A woman’s worth should NOT be directly about a*ss jiggling on Instagram (and no I’m not making that up). I see so many girls younger than 15 dressing inappropriately and it’s definitely concerning. Like, shorts with their cheeks completely showing, crop tops, etc. no child should be dressed like a sex trafficking victim. And I’m not the kind of person that’s bothered by tight clothes or a little cleavage, that’s not what I’m talking about here.

The ones who believe that everyone should cover their entire bodies in clothing are the ones who are over sexualizing. Doesn’t matter what you wear, someone will sexualize you for having human body parts. I mean, shoulders are forbidden to be shown in school because it’s “distracting”.

Nobody gave a f*ck about my immodest clothing choice and I felt beautiful and cute. Mhm, i think the "a naked body isn't inherently sexual" comes across very well in art.
Nude art is generally not meant to be sexual. However, historian's have this silly goofy trait of saying "oh, the artist drew HER with a mischievous gaze as to entice the viewer" and it's just a neutral if not apathetic expression.
Sooo much nudity in art was never intended as sexual, granted, we don't know anything about the artists true intent, but still. A lot of nude art just gets called sexual.
For example, a lot of nude female statues from forever ago get sexualised (at least in my art history classes) as opposed to the nude male statues. The double standard is astounding.

The questions felt very uncomfortable and we all mentioned that we were worried about the content from the moment we finished the interview. It was especially clear they wanted to make fun of us as they targeted us outside of a Spencer's and we were very obviously not Christian people. It's impossible not to notice how few things I'm "allowed" to wear in comparison to other people. School uniforms that were fine for everyone else where a problem on me. Other girls could wear shirts that when I did, I was told I was "showing off" or needed to cover up. As I got older literallt everything I do became sexualized no matter what. I even stopped eating ice cream to avoid it. The message from age 6 was clear: Be ashamed of my body. It is still something I struggle with becsuse I know wearing clothes I like and that most others could wear will cause me a ton of judgement and harrassment. I just hate this whole modesty crap. I knew it was a completely natural activity, and no one stared or sexualized my aunt.
I find it very strange now that the Puritan mindset that was held in the early history of this country still exists strongly, despite the fact that many who were activists in the Sexual Revolution during its heyday are now some of the most vocal about modesty and "morality". I also find it to be hypocritical when they scream about people being immodest and immoral in public yet are often the ones who are lecherous and "kinky" in their private lives. What people do in the privacy of a home is nobody else's business (as long as nobody's being hurt is fine with me, and it is not a bad thing that there are indecent exposure laws to prevent the offending of certain people, but I'm also of the mindset that those laws are sometimes going too far because modesty/immodesty is in the eye of the beholder.

It’s different for different denominations of course, but Christianity (or religion in general with their respective deities but I obviously have more experience with my own religion) is about a personal relationship with God, not about a strict set of rules with right and wrong answers. Sounds to me like Paul and Morgan need to reread the Gospel and maybe learn about the entire fucking point of the New Testament.

I think part of the conversation that gets missed sometimes is how people with certain body types can be more likely to be labeled as "immodest." For example, I am tall (5' 10") and when I was a kid/teen, it was impossible to find shorts that fit the school dress code until bermuda shorts became popular. Everything is short on me. Also, as someone with big boobs, most tops show my cleavage. Even a turtleneck can look "immodest" if you have big boobs.

All Paul said was that he was being vague, and he's right.
There are non-vague ways of saying it, like: "here are some issues with modesty for men, and here are some for women",
or "here are some principles men and women should take into account when it comes to modesty".
Of course it's possible he did say this and it was cut out of the video, but if the interaction was as presented he was right to call him vague.
Of course, at the end of the video (not fully shown here) Paul & Morgan say that in their opinion, immodesty was much more of an issue with women than men and that was why they were focused on it.
This is something I do disagree with. Especially since (as they correctly identify), the biblical understanding of modesty is far broader than self-sexualisation. They think that the self-sexualisation of women is the majority problem with modesty today, and for that reason I think they fail to understand the modern world.

Because men have modesty standards as well.
It's only seen as a vague non answer because it wasn't the specific answer/drama he wanted. The dude straight up ruined his lead and he was bitter about it.

    • @IamGrimalkin

You aren't giving reasons why he's not being vague, you're giving reasons why, in your opinion, it's right for him to be vague.
Which is fair enough, but in that case Paul's comment is also fair enough. It was vague, for good or for bad.
Although personally I'm not fond of the vagueness.
It's true the question is somewhat unbalanced in that it only focuses on one gender; but in my opinion the best way of answering that is to give specific advice for both genders.
Although personally, my biggest issue is not the gender thing but the implication that showing off attractiveness is the main modesty problem in the modern world.
I think the main issue with modesty in the modern world is the same as in the ancient world (showing off wealth). It's also much clearer and more straightforward to extract from the biblical data than the analogies they use.
Therefore I'd say possibly the largest issue for women is home decorations and the largest issue for men is their car. And if we're focussing on clothing; the issue is designer and tailored clothing for both genders.
That kind of answer is not something that Paul could call vague. I hope you see the difference.

Men can’t control their urges. It’s our responsibility to not tempt them
That’s what one of the girls I’m loose with told me the other day. We were at a pool party and talking about modesty. We are both Christian. I’m Christian and she’s CHRISTIAN. Like she believes everything anyone above her tells her and is like a recording device. She’s learned the only way to get validation is to agree and follow what her adults tell her.
    Anyways she goes
“women can’t wear booty shorts and crop tops because they tempt men”
I go “but men’s urges aren’t our responsibility. If a man feels something because I’m in a crop top and booty shorts it’s not my job to control his urges. It’s his job to control his urges and do something”
She goes “yeah but men can’t control their urges. It’s our job to dress modestly so we don’t tempt them”
I swam over to the other side of the pool for a minute while they continued talking. I was so done. I was about to go off about r-word, and SA and consent and all that.
A man can’t control his level of attraction to someone. He CAN choose what he does with that. And if he thinks I’m hot it’s NOT my responsibility for what happens to him and what he does to me because of it.
Harassment and all the other things aren’t different because the person was in a skirt vs sweatpants.
    I was SO MAD
And she has two brothers. Yep, more guys being raised to think their choices aren’t their responsibility just because of how someone looks.
    Fuck that.
Like I said earlier, she is super Christian and probably doesn’t even know what catcalling is or what that word means. That’s how sheltered she is.
Her parents are why r culture is so big in the church. They teach men what they do isn’t their fault and that it’s the women’s. They are why victims blame themselves.

Jesus himself said that if the way a woman dresses causes a man to have impure thoughts, he should pluck out his own eyes, and if the sight of her body makes him want to sin, he should cut off his hand to keep himself from acting on that urge. But the church will never teach that verse in the Sunday sermons, because it would unravel their whole facade. As someone who was raised in the church, it’s helpful to remember that a lot of the “Christians” going around thumping the Bible nowadays are conveniently leaving out the parts where God condemns their behavior (including the Bible thumping, there’s a whole passage on not shoving the word of God down the throats of those who don’t want to hear it and letting your kindness be your sermon instead).
