You are 100 % right about the food . I live in The US and when the ladies prepare banku it does taste like the one in Ghana . Public SHS in Ghana is better than private SHS .
People don't want to go to public school because it's cheap but it's quality, normally people who couldn't make it to public schools because of weak grades rather goes to the private schools
Secondary school food has nothing to do with Ghanaian food. Those foods were made up by students just for survival. Being in a boarding school is like being in on hustling field. As long as it wont ki!ll you then you are good to go. Even those of us not in boarding schools find those foods weird.
For your information, the 4 year SHS system in Ghana was introduced by the politicians and with a subsequent change in Government, it was reversed to 3 years.
Is not because public schools are cheap. They are the best for educating and grooming young ones. You learn to be independent, build lasting friendships and school "clans" at that level.
The initial rationale for the 4 year SHS was to improve the SHS course content to the level of GCE A Level and reduce university education to 3 years. I left Ghana in 2004 so don’t know why it was shelved. This girl really looks and sound Ghanaian.
In the four year SHS, the first year is for core subjects only - English, mathematics, science, and social studies for all students. Then from year 2 to 4 is for your elective subjects and core. This four year educational period help many students to grasp the basic and also assess themselves better before choosing a program. I was part of the second batch and I'll never change it for the 3 years.
For most schools I know of, the first year was wasted, sort of like the teachers know you have more time and in any case they were finishing the same syllabus in 3 years
