    There's a theory that this could be the love affair of American poet Emily Dickinson and Sue Gilbert. Sue resembles the house of stone in which she had lived in a house named The Evergreens in Amherst, Massachusetts. While Emily symbolizes the "ivy" as Emily aside from poetry, she loves plants and she has a herbarium - book of collected dried plant specimens. "My house of stone, your ivy grows, now I'm covered in you" so Sue as the stone is now covered with the love of Emily like an ivy.
    "My pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand, taking mine but its been promised to another." Because Sue was engaged then later married to Emily's brother Austin in the Thanksgiving Day.
    Emily spent most of her life living in isolation in her house, The Homestead giving a cohesive ambience to the song's setting which is the abandoned cottage covered in vines.
    Also, the narrator spoke that "your ivy grows and now I'm covered in you" resembles Emily's love growing in her metaphorically and after when Emily died at the age of 55, its now Sue who literally covered Emily with flowers around her cold neck.

      This actually make sense. Taylor was reading a lot of books during quarantine 2020. No wonder she would write a song about it this story

      Also the fact that Ivy is the 10th track .. Evermore was released on Dec 10 which was Emily Dickinson's birthday. ..also idk if it was intentional on her part (knowing her, it cud be) Track no 10 of Folklore is Illicit Affair.....in a way Ivy is also about an illicit affair lol...She's a genius in placing these Easter eggs

    I definitely believe this is about 2 women falling inlove but are already commited to someone. This happened probably during the medieval period or the 1800s where these kind of love is forbidden. They wanted to run and live in a forgotten land which reminds me of the cottage from Shrek. This is also my favorite song in the album

      Literally The World To Come vibes. You have to watch that movie because I seriously think it's an inspiration to the song.

    whenever I listen to Ivy I always think of a young maiden promised to this old man (arranged marriage in the 18' or 1900) who falls in love with one of the house servants (the one who literally sets fire in the fireplace, literally plants ivy all around the house), she meets him in her future husband's house and they drink his wine, and later she meets with her lover in a graveyard his cold hands touch hers because he is poor and can't afford gloves or warm clothes... after this her lover goes back to her husband's house, she sits in the grave yard watching this old lady (a widow) visiting her husband's grave, while thinking how the sadness over the dead is just what she is feeling while still being alive, because there is no way she could ever grieve over her lover like that widow over her husband.

      Just a correction, no one plants ivy around the house. It's a parasitic plant that eventually damages the walls due to its moisture and breaks it.
      Maybe you're thinking of some other climbing plant or something, but ivy is damaging to the stone house, which again is a great metaphor in the song cuz this relationship is dangerous. It's not nicely looked upon in their society and the narrator literally fears that the husband will burn their house if he found out.
      Also, since it's a parasite, ivy is hard to get rid of, and it grows very fast.

    By that widow line she means that while the widow misses her dead husband the character has her husband by her side but it's falling for somebody else and she feels bad about it :)

    • @himechu7048
      @himechu7048 11 днів тому

      Interesting. I understood it more as while the widow is grieving her dead husband the main character is grieving for someone she can't have but is alive.

    There's a theory that this song is about a ghost of a woman who was killed by her jilted husband because she cheated on him. The house of stone is actually her grave and the ivy can be interpreted to be the actual plant growing over it. And she sees the widow because the widow comes to the graveyard everyday. And it's set in medieval time I think

    evermore is on another level, even i as a swiftie still need to learn and process this poetry/stories/art. along with a dictionary near by. because taylor has been writing all her life almost all her songs about her own life and feelings. and now for the first time shes making whole albums that are fictional stories. its crazy. she was born for this i think. she was always a story teller.

    The song it’s indeed about an affair but it’s the other way she’s singing about the perspective of the person in the “dreamland” relationship already but it’s being tempted to cheat with this person planting the seeds

    its HER, falling for another, but shes married (drink my husbands wine). and in my perspective, shes with the new guy now. (she now is covered in him) . i really love this song. its about cheating, but its still absolutely romantic :)

  • @alimoussa7020

    This song is one of my favorites on his album. What i made from it was that the narrator is married but is having an affair with another man ( My pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand
    Taking mine, but it's been promised to another) so her hand already has her hand (ring, marriage) but she has promised it for her lover and she knows that this relationship is not strong but very needed (Your touch brought forth an incandescent glow
    Tarnished but so grand).
    She can't stop his love from growing on her (Oh, I can't
    Stop you putting roots in my dreamland
    My house of stone, your ivy grows
    And now I'm covered in you). He is planting his love in her and like an ivy its growing and covering her.
    She questions what makes her lover wants to get into this complicated love (I wish to know
    The fatal flaw that makes you long to be
    Magnificently cursed) and fast forward she's afraid her husband is gonna find out , what would he do if he finds out?, do you dare to tell me to run away with you or am i going to sit here drink my husbands wine and see what will become .... i love your reactions i would recommend going over the lyrics in its entirety after listening to the song or always looking at it on a macro level to understand how each line fits in the story. ❤

  • @sebastianholmes9372

    This is personally one of my favourite one on the album, In my theory this is written from the perspective of someone who's already in a committed relationship but longing for someone else they can't stop thinking about, the song lyrics makes me feel like it's set in early 18 hundreds, so probably an infidelity angle for like a forbidden homosexual romance cause it was frowned upon during those times..

    • @sebastianholmes9372
      @sebastianholmes9372 3 роки тому +3

      ...It also could have been inspired by Taylor's own personal experience when she was in a relationship with tom Hiddleston but was wanting to be with her current boyfriend joe alwyn

    borrowed time means you want to borrow time so that you can be with that person. You want the time that you are wasted not being together. Comeback to the sweet moment that you spend together.
    Ivy could means feeling/love that grow in her heart.
    House could means she are hard as house. Building wall from stranger (trust issue) but end up falling in love. And falling in love deeply like ivy grow around her house. The love feeling that start grow in her heart.
