This was so helpful! I like how you described how you created the template to fill in and how you chose a theme for the sections! The technique can be easier than deciding what to create!
I love playing with dots and circles, doing mixed media, and doing zentangle work. This has it all! AND is what I he been playing around with on painty papers. You just inspired me to go big, and be bold. Thank you for for the kick in the pants. I will follow. And look back at other videos you have done...obviously we have like tastes at least in what we like to do in art.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts I have only just come across Zentangle, like a couple of days ago and haven't tried it yet myself. I simply love that you have used them together and what you have created with them. Certainly look forward to seeing more of your creations. So exciting.
I’ve been to Australia a couple times and love it there. I have combined Zentangle and dot painting together and this is what I came up with for this particular painting. The Australian aboriginal dot painting technique is beautiful! So glad you liked my video.
I just love it Patti... I can't wait to use this type of painting design technique instead of the standard "Manadala'" which by the way I love as well - variety the spice of life eh! Thank you for your demonstration.
Margareth Demery Yes I love the mandalas as well but wanted to create more of an art piece and with this technique every piece will be different. By choosing different paint colours and different sections to paint in. Endless possibilities. Enjoy your creations! Thanks so much for commenting!
Such an amazing piece of art!! Thank you for sharing this tutorial. I was looking for some dot art which is not mandala (even though I LOVE mandalas!!!) as I never done dot art before. (I’m not even an artist, lol! I just do art for joy ❤) And I came across this beautiful dot painting yesterday. I sat down today to create my own version of it and it is turning out rather beautiful. Thank you so much for this video!! I wish I could share my dot painting with you somehow.
Your very welcome. It's fun to do and has so much potential. This one I did is more of a free form piece. Adding patterns where ever you want to creates endless possibilities!
Hi Patti I have made a start. I have put some black gesso onto a slab of plexi-glass and drawn out a pattern. I work on plexi-glass a lot with acrylics usually doing the acrylic pours, when I dont have plexi-glass I work on canvas. This slower and more detailed work will be a nice change from pouring.
The next one I make will be on canvas. When I was in Kauai I went to an art gallery and saw some beautiful pieces on plexiglass. I have this huge list of things I want to do and working on plexiglass was one of them. I have such varied arts and crafts interests I just want to do it all! My days are too short. I could craft my life away! Haha. Enjoy your painting!
Ohh Patti me too lol. I make wedding jewellery and wedding stationery, chaine maille jewellery too which I find fascinating., I make mixed media canvasses, make greetings cards and do crossstitch. I recently started working with acrylics.. Just isnt enough time and as I get older I get slower.... hehe. Do try plexi-glass when you can it also comes in colours now not just clear. I work on any thickness up to an inch but it does start to get rather heavy for me at that thickness but they just look so good and chunkyyyyy :))
I often see and hear the term "walking it out". Does this involve using the same amount of pressure and time spent pressing each dot and the paint just depletes itself naturally smaller and smaller, or do you use a different amount of pressure or pressing time for each dot, such as lifting it up a bit more with each one?? Thanks for helping me to understand this better.
Yes you are correct with your first response. I'm using the same amount of pressure and the paint lessens with each dot you make as you walk it out. BUT I will also adjust the pressure when necessary. If I want a smaller dot than I will use less pressure and larger dot with more pressure. By trying it out you will get the feel for it.
I do like the the round dots but I also use my screw driver set and it has different sizes for the Robertson drivers which are square as well as the set has star shaped heads as well. So many fun tools and items around the house to experiment with.
Thanks so much! No it is not essential to use gesso but if your wood panel is rough it helps to smooth out the surface for painting on. You can get by with just painting it black.
Hi!! Do you have any tips for substituting dotting tools?? They dont sell those in my place. I want to look in the hardware store and search if there is anything there with a ball tip that i can use like a dotting tool. Any ideas?? Thank you and have a nice day!!
Hi Jennifer. There are many household items that you can use for good dotting tools. I mention quite a few in my beginner dot art video. Here’s the link to my video. DOT ART - tutorial for beginners ua-cam.com/video/boizp1tkS4I/v-deo.html
Yes, it definitely can be done on canvas. I would suggest a smaller canvas though. I just like the nice hard surface of the wood as it doesn't give like canvas does. I will be doing some more dot painting videos and I will do one on canvas for you in the future.
Hi Annie, Dot painting is a little harder to film and get the camera angle just right. Here’s a link to my painting playlist and you will find a few more dot painting tutorials to have a look at. Maybe they will work better for you. ua-cam.com/play/PLp6o7Vy1aS_Wta4NQjzFhLJ308qmVwKx_.html
Not sure what you mean. If you are referring to the black base coat than the answer is: It is best if your canvas has had a coat of gesso. Or you can paint your panel board black like I did so the board is prepped as well and the black background allows all your dots to stand out more.
You can do dot painting on anything you want. The important thing is to do a test and make sure there is not something on your working surface that will not allow the acrylic paint to adhere. Try a few dots and let it dry and if the dots come off easily then that's your answer. Hope that helps.
Perhaps a light coat of gesso, dry completely, then the acrylic basecoat. Well, thanks for the inspiration. Can't wait to do at least a practice one on some canvas.
Yes it is a good idea to dry each section just in case your hand comes down and smudges a section. If your careful you don't need to. You can use your blow dryer for faster drying. When I start to rush I get careless so it is a good idea to dry before you go on.
I do try and match music to the pace of the video. I tend to like guitar and easy listening pieces. I look for royalty free music on incompetech and youtubes video editor music library and other sources. In this video I had a few different songs. As I don't have a lot of memory on my iPad I delete some of the songs after I have used them. I try to add different music to all my videos if I can. So saying that I'm sorry but I can't remember the titles of all the songs. I know the first one is fireflies and stardust.

Ever used spray paint as a background/base?
No I haven’t but I’m sure it would work great.
Could this dot art be done on wooden picture frames as well? Or book covers of journals? Or will it only work on canvas?
You can do dot painting on anything you want. The important thing is to do a test and make sure there is not something on your working surface that will not allow the acrylic paint to adhere. Try a few dots and let it dry and if the dots come off easily then that's your answer. Hope that helps.

Do you let the paint dots dry before start a new area?
Yes it is a good idea to dry each section just in case your hand comes down and smudges a section. If your careful you don't need to. You can use your blow dryer for faster drying.
