    Really an amazing video. Thank you for your dedication that will help even generations in the future whom we hand these machines down to. I have the 328K that I bought for $40 cabinet and even all the plates and disks. Nothing missing..first time owner who passed away and I was the fortunate one who got be the next owner. I have a 327K and a 328K and immediately thought "What? Straight stitch only?". But then the fact that I have recently been educated that this is not neccessarily a bad thing (guess who did the educating?) kicked in :-).
    I guess I have to change the belt in my machines, 'cause I most often have to start the handwheel by hand when I start sewing.
    Great video and thank you for sharing your vast amount of knowledge!

      Many of these vintage models lack the proper belt tension when I get them. If it's too tight it really strains the motor, especially when first starting. The other thing I find on them is the foot controller has never been serviced and just needs a good cleaning and adjusting.
      I made a Playlist of videos for doing that and if you get bored someday you could take a look and see what you think. ua-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKL6ePPxLpmnWSzTyxPKTb71.html Thanks for your nice comment and I appreciate you watching my channel.

    Yep done that foot left UP. I now always just sew a few stitches and check as a habit.
    Also my other habit is to check how much bottom bobbin thread there is, I once was sewing a garden furniture cover 3 ft long with no bobbin thread ;-))
    bobbin was full BUT it was in the vintage machine when I bought it; further investigation there was 7 colours of thread on that bobbin ;-))
    My wife's brother fs40 will not let you sew with the foot up.
    Paper towel is the best thing to test on since it is easier to free up a jamb especially when adjusting the hook timing.
    all the best

      Some great tips, thank you. I feel a little less stupid now, haha. I think 7 colors of thread is a record? The most I found was 4. I LOL at you sewing the 3 FT. Thanks for sharing and watching.

    I found one of these on the side of the road. My first restoration project. Mine has a green "hammered" finish. This model doesn't get anywhere near enough attention. It's a great machine. Reliable, no fuss, easy to use straight stitch machine. I believe Singer marketed it as a "lower" end machine, which means that it's head and shoulders above anything that's available on the market today.
    The large screw at the left end of the pitman arm was loose on mine and the machine rattled. I discovered that it's a reverse threaded screw.

      What a fabulous find! Thanks for rescuing it.Yes, an underappreciated model, like the 404. Singer spent more to manufacture ZZ-capable machines and they cost more to make so they pushed them in their advertising and stores. There was enough demand, even into the 1960s that they still made models like the 329K. My wife has been sewing for 50+ years and uses a straight stitch 301A, even for knit fabrics. She did buy an edger to finish some seams in the late 1970's

      @@andytubesewing1953 It really was a fabulous find and it got me started on a fabulous hobby. Part of my restoration project on this machine was to refurbish the original button foot pedal. I followed your videos on how to do it. Took it completely apart, cleaned the carbon disks, put it back together and was able to achieve perfect stitch-by-stich control. You're the one who needs to be thanked for the rescue of this machine, along with the rescue of another 8 machines and the repair of a neighbour's Bernina and a Featherweight. So thank you Andy.

    I just want to thank you for making this super informative video. This video combined with a very brief skim through of the instruction manual (that I found online😊) helped me get my singer 329k cleaned, oiled, threaded, and working beautifully! Thanks so much for doing a 329K video. I have had this machine for a couple or few years and really like it, I got mine at a Habitat for Humanity store. For some reason a lot of people put down this machine which makes no sense to me, its an all metal machine, has a tough finish on it and works great. So glad your back and keep up the good work!

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  10 місяців тому +1

      I'm with you! It's a wonderful machine. It was the striking style and finish that caught my eye at the auction. While restoring it I came to love it. Yes, a very tough finish, hard and scratch-resistant. All metal and a strong performer. When companies started making ZZ models these straight stitch machins started falling out of favor. They pushed their ZZ models to the max. People came to feel a straight stitch only machine was somehow "lesser", "cheaper", and not made as well forgetting that for 100 years straight stitch machines made all the clothes, bags, curtains, bedspreads, scarfs, shoes, etc. My wife has been sewing for 55+ years now and although she has a beautiful 403A she seldom uses it preferring her 301A. She did finally buy an edger (serger) to save time sewing gowns, drapes, and other large items. She can sew knit and double-knit fabrics just fine with that 301A, no worries. IMO, you picked up one of the better home machines made by Singer. I appreciate you watching my channel, and thanks for the comment.

      The more I worked on this 329K the more I liked it. Something about the front styling is unique and attractive. The arm looks thinner but measures the same width as the 32&K & 328K do. I guess it looks so sleek b/c there are no controls on the front. I do wish it was a slant needle, but I can't complain about how much denim I got under the foot. I appreciate you watching, Raph, and the comments you share.

You have saved me a lot of grief working on my 401A. I am currently working on a 404 that I wasn't sure I would keep, but after hearing your opinion, I am keeping it. Note: At 1:05:00, when you put it in bobbin winding mode, the needle/feed dog seemed to be engaged.
    Again, thank you very much and hope you are feeling well.

      Thank you. Yes, please keep the 404, at least for a while to see if you agree. You have a good eye for detail with spotting the moving NB. I did not notice it while recording but saw it during editing. When I'm putting the handwheel back on the counter balance I have a habit of putting a little oil on the counterbalance before sliding the handwheel back on. When I put too much the wheel will stick to the counterbalance for a while. I just went back to test it and I wiped off the counterbalance and put one drop of oil, spread with my fingertip. That fixed the "creeping needle bar" problem. I only work on the machines now on good days and for a short time. I just decided to leave the original recording when editing, thinking "no one will notice that", haha. Busted by mseller 😀 I appreciate that you watch my videos that closely. Take care.

    Have been looking at your vids today. Love how you name your machines. What is this one’s name? I have several mid-century Singers. I think I will start naming mine as well. Most need a little work. Finding someone to entrust the work to is a problem. There is no one who works on machines within 70 miles of me. It is a lost skill set I am afraid. Oh Andy - what an excellent video this is. Thank you - all those close-ups and editing must have taken ages. You won't be the first to leave the presser foot by mistake when working on lots of thick layers, it can be hard to tell without checking the lifter whether it's up, or just held up by the layers. I think your machine would have handled the 9 layers too, it looks more like it was the needle that wasn't quite up to it rather than the machine... :-)

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  11 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching, Megan. I just used a regular denim needle. Trying that many layers I should have used a Heavy Duty one with a thicker shaft. The problem is the fabric is so thick that the needle is still in it when the dog starts moving it, and that bent the tip right off. It's fun trying even though no one would ever sew that many layers. Peace and Health in New Zealand.

    Hi Andy. Thank you very much for this video. The 329K is very attractive design to me. Now, you’ve sent me on an internet voyage. I’m doing comparisons between the 327K, 328K, and 329K, and I have a question for you. Is the arm cover on a 327K plastic or metal? You affirm the lid on the arm cover of the 329K is aluminum. I have a 328K and I know the lid is aluminum, too. I have rewatched your videos on the 327K (the Spartan), and I can’t find anyplace where you mention what the arm cover is made of (I’m just skimming around your videos here, so I may have missed it if you mentioned it). Since you have actually handled a 327K, you would know. Some other You Tubes I’ve watched say that the arm cover is plastic for the 327K, but I’m not so sure.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  11 місяців тому

      My 327K was a Spartan version; made more simple to reduce cost a little bit. The arm cover was plastic, for sure. The Singer badged 327K was a little more equipped as it had a light switch for example. I only saw one, but believe it did have a plastic cover. The 327K was a "Basic" zigzag machine with one pattern disc screwed onto the disc drive, the 328K was the top of the line for this family with a metal arm cover and a big chrome thumb nut and flip-up door to change to any of the over 20+ Type A (flat) pattern discs. The 329K was the straight stitch only machine, a little on the heavy-duty side to stand up well under heavier sewing. I think that's why they gave it the metal arm cover, too. I love the way the 329K looks all around, especially the treatment they gave the lamp cover and front side. They kept the backside with a similar style too, which surprised me. It had its own molds for casting. A very nice model, IMO.

      Thanks for all the information! It’s interesting to know they made a new body mold for the 329K; it is very stylish, both front and back, and I really like the color.@@andytubesewing1953

    I have 2 of these machines on one of them the top thread gets caught in the bobbin. I can't figure out what's wrong.

      Sorry to hear that, Charlene. If it actually gets caught "in" the bobbin you may have a class 15 bobbin in it instead of a class 66. Class 15 is taller and the thread can't glide over it. If it tangled at the right bottom corner of the bobbin case the Thread Clearance Gap may be too narrow and pinch the thread there. Once one loop gets caught all the ones behind it just stack up on it. I've had to adjust a few of them. Here is the video I made about it for model 327K which has the same system. You might take a look at it and see what you think. ua-cam.com/video/fq_1qRQFM_Y/v-deo.html Thanks for watching my channel.

    Great to see a video on the 329k, Andy. Mine has an incredibly loud rattle from the bobbin case hitting the spring. Is this normal? Or is there a way to mitigate this? Thanks!

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  7 місяців тому

      Thanks for asking. The space between the bobbin case corner and the spring is called the "Thread Clearance" and it is adjustable
      If the space is too narrow the thread can hang there and get bird-nested. If it's too wide you get a lot of Clacking/Rattleing.
      Here is a video for adjusting the clearance on Models 327, 328, and 329. ua-cam.com/video/fq_1qRQFM_Y/v-deo.html
      Best of luck and happy sewing.
