    For a long time I wanted to do this comparison: which is the e-ink tablet that has the best real-world writing quality? There is a lot of "noise" online and A LOT of opinions about this topic, so I wanted to to a controlled test and observe the results. And the results speak very clearly for themselves :)

      Yeah was debating between the NA3 and NA3C and this video made me realize that a 300PPI black and white version would be a huge improvement. So if I go with the NA3C for now then if the color matrix does annoy me too much for b&w content in the end, I can get this hypothethical updated black and white model in the future, and then by the time color e-ink sees a large improvement the NA3C would be kind of old anyway so it wouldn't be too much of a problem to upgrade that (in like 2026 or later). All in all the the most sensible device to go with for now.

    Thank you for checking this out. To me, the writing quality on all these devices looks okay. The Note Air 3c appears to have a thinner line than on the Note Air 3. Otherwise you are right. My handwriting is already poor quality because I have poor fine motor skills. I only use cursive handwriting and it will take more than a nice Boox tablet to make it look good.
    The quality of the note taking software on these devices is more important to me though. Just my opinion.

    An excellent comparison video! It certainly seems like BOOX is fitting curves to the pen position samples it collects, while Supernote is connecting the sample points with straight lines. The difference is striking (especially when you look this closely). I wonder whether there are differences in the sampling rates between the different devices. If BOOX is sampling the pen position at a higher rate (or if you wrote more slowly on the BOOX devices), that might be a contributing factor to the far superior results produced by their devices. Regardless, BOOX just seems to be doing a superior job overall.
    It would be interesting to look at how some older devices (Remarkable 1, BOOK Nova series) stack up against these newer devices. How far have we come from the early days of E-Ink tablets?

    Boox is unquestionably on a different level compared to the competition. Nowadays, it stands as the leading company in e-ink devices, despite the pervasive push for Amazon's offerings. It's baffling that Amazon continues to sell the same Paperwhite model since 2007.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  2 місяці тому +1

      Not really baffling as they held the monopoly on reader devices for the longest time, and a lot of people who are uninformed still correlate e-ink with Kindle. This, unfortunately, allows Amazon to do what they are doing with both the reader devices and the Scribe.

At least on other than Kindle devices,

    This review has really set the cat amongst the pigeons! I'm a confused shopper, who wants both a reader and a note taker (probably 50/50 usage), I had almost settled on the Nomad (Supernote A6X2), after nearly going for the Note Air 3 (or C). Now I'm more confused than ever. Supernote looked the best pick for writing, and with 300DPI, but without any lighting for reading after hours. Note Air 3 looked good, but only 227ppi. Air 3C is tempting for color reading and 300dpi B/W, but the grey backgorund / low brightness was a deterent (who really needs color anyway). This review kind of puts to bed any 227dpi vs 300dpi concerns (I mean, the Note Air 3 at 227dpi looks pretty good compared to the A6X2 at 300dpi!). So, maybe the Note AIr 3 does make the best all-round solution, against the recent hype of the A6X2? Jeez, I need a drink! 🤔

Like my Day One journaling and Evernote knowledge, for copying & pasting my notes, and also Libby and Kindle Apps for my additional reading sources. You're all probably gonna think I'm crazy but I bought a Tab s8 a while back and I put a specific paperfeel screen protector on it. I've been using it to take notes for quite some time now and I got used to it and now I really like it. I can turn on either focus mode or do not disturb mode but to be honest I don't always need to be in distraction free mode. The note app I use almost replicates the Remarkable experience perfectly with nearly every feature. But I do like that I can add color or color highlights to my notes on my tab s8. But to be fair I gave the Remarkable a shot. To be honest I just didn't feel like I was using it any differently than my Tab s8. It just seemed like I was carrying another device around but doing the same thing and spending another $350. So I ended up sending it back. I see the appeal for some but it just not needed for my use case.

      Same for me - I tried and returned the Remarkable, and I use a Galaxy Tab S6 Lite with a matte screen protector. I use Remarkable nibs in the Samsung s-pen. With OLED screen, black background, and using the default yellow ink Samsung gives you for writing, taking notes is a pleasure. Samsung Notes has good UI. The only caviat with my S9 Ultra is it is big, but again, great as a dual screen which is miles away better than any iPad. Will keep watching colour e-ink tablet and maybe one day will switch to one as they are lighter.

    I was surprised how noticeable the jaggies are on the scribe. Even though it has the 300ppi screen, their lack of aliasing or some other post processing is hurting it. I'm curious what the air 3c is doing to get so smooth in comparison to the regular air 3. Maybe with BSR the writing is aliased but the setting/option is hidden and always on?

    Nice video. I like the nerdy deep study videos. I have a different opinion on Boox. First, my experience is with the older Lumi Max device, but with the latest updates. Boox device’s result looks better and smoother, but that is because it does more processing. ReMarkable’s jaggedness is likely due to it is trying to capture what the device. This could be different from the person’s real writing, because sampling of pen position could have a lower frequency. I don’t think Boox’s hardware is much better, but it used software to smooth out or fill in the sampling gaps. On the Lumi Max, which is about as old as the reMarkable 2, the trade off is speed. I could even see it flashes after I stop. The good thing about Boox is that with newer devices, they solve the speed problem by upgrading the hardware.

    Can the less accurate interpretention of handwritings on Scribe, rM2 and SuperNotes be done because of lack of processing power? BOOX tablets have more powerful internals than any mentioned device so they have more capacity to calculate path more accurately. If devices with less power do same model of calculation as BOOX devices does it would result in increasing of handwriting latency. They would be slow in writing but have better quality in interpretation of strokes. So maybe the quality of handwritings is, in some light, representation of power of the device.
    Is this thought valid in some way or it is just mess by laik?

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  2 місяці тому +2

      It may well be the case, but unfortunately we have no way of directly testing that, but it certainly is something that could be the case. It's obvious that Boox devices are capturing more data during the handwriting, thus capturing a more accurate rendition of what is being written on them.

    I’ve recently got a RM2 and I love writing on it, and have been handwriting so much more since getting it. For me, it represents my writing as it actually is. But I notice a difference using other styluses. The Kindle Scribe pen doesn’t write well on the RM2. So perhaps the lesson is use the right pen for the right tablet to get the results they’ve optimised for. Wonder if the Supernote would fare better using the ceramic pen. The MarkerPlus works well on the RM2 representing my writing accurately and so I’m glad I got it.

      @@asdsadasdarwerasddaa The pen cannot make a difference in the jaggedness or the optimisation levels that we saw on the Remarkable. What can be different is if a user is using a pen without calibrating it first. It is imperative to always perform the calibration process when using a different pen, otherwise, you might experience what the other viewer reported. But just for clarity sake, all of the devices were optimized for the pen that was used on these tests. • @aaronperl
    @aaronperl 2 місяці тому +1

    Maybe it's being lost in the UA-cam compression, or because I'm used to the look of the RM2, but I don't see what you're seeing. The handwriting looks very similar to the Boox devices to me, although not anti-aliased. I don't see how it's "obviously not my handwriting." I guess it could also be that you're more used to the look of your own writing.
    Good video, nonetheless. It's interesting to see a comparison of all these devices, and to be honest what I see is that the RM2 is still holding up against newer devices, since it still looks fine to my eyes (anti-aliasing might be nice, but its amount of jagginess doesn't bother me. I thought some of the others look worse). But I guess it could be because I'm used to it.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  2 місяці тому +3

      Well yes, I think that only the person writing can be the judge of how faithfully their own handwriting has been captured.
      As for RM2 "holding up well" I'm not sure objectively how correct such a statement is, especially when talking about the only objective point of measure here, the writing quality. The precision of capturing a person's handwriting and curve interpretation is much more open for subjective interpretation, but in the objective comparison of the raw display quality, RM2 is quite obviously and measurably the worst.
      You can perfectly well say "I don't care about the display quality of the writing on my device" and that's fine, but that is simply your own opinion and choice on the matter, but has absolutely nothing to do with a comparison that does look at precisely that aspect, that you say that you don't care about :)
      So no, in terms of handwriting display quality, RM2 doesn't hold up well at all, in fact it is the worst performing device in this test. And it has to do with their software "optimizations", because this device and platform used to perform way better when it first came out, but they steadily made it worse and worse, with each update.

  • @johnsch8634

    In terms of the blockiness of the curves on Supernote, it looks like their sampling rate for the pen position is really low, like MS paint only getting your mouse position at 30hz and then drawing blocky lines to connect the points along the line you're drawing.
    I've got a device from Hanvon (a company pretty much solely focused on the Chinese market) and they must have a really high sampling rate because I can't perceive any blockiness even when I write very fast, but at the same time I don't think they're doing a lot of processing because of the quality of the output.
    I mostly use the smallest pen size and the exported quality is really bad, jagged aliasing everywhere, but on device it looks fine.

    The Boox devices unquestionably come out best, but regarding purchasing... the tools Boox offer for controlling, navigating and organising text come nowhere near the Supernote, I just need to get my hands on the A5X2 so that I can _side load_ a browser and I'm home free.

      @karlmunford7000 2 місяці тому

      @@yaseenhussain4071 As is always the case, your user case should be the driver towards what you purchase.
      In many ways the Supernote is a note-taker with a Kindle and drawing app included.
      You can add headings, stars, keys words and highlights in each notepad, the heading give you an instant dropdown index of the pages you've given heading and you can in the same drop down see every page starred and every keyword added. Many use the stars as a to-do list to sort at the end of the day, week or month deleting them as they do the work. Additionally, you can do a system wide search of all your notebooks and documents for Stars, Keywords and highlights.
      Then theres links in notes, where you can add a link to another page in the same note, a page in another note or document or to the web. One thing they lack currently but believe are working on... is the same link functionality in PDFs and ePubs. The tools to review PDfs is extensive and you can exports all your notes, highlights and annotations in a pdf to read at your leisure, it really is quite extensive. However, there is no access to the Google Play Store though the A6X2, and the soon to be released A5X2 will allow you to side-load apps which is a bit over my head.
      But if you really want access to Google Play and are in an office environment, want listen to music, play a few games etc... the Boox rage is a must. However, one thing that bugs me about Boox that no one else really seems concerned with, is battery cycle count, the new colour range of Boox can ratchet up that count and I estimate that some will need new batteries within possibly three years but to do so... you've got to crack the case with all the risk that entails while the new Supernote range of A6X2 and A5X2 have user replaceable batteries.
      You might want to glance at the following which touches on the older _[which I currently have]_ A5X abilities.
      ua-cam.com/video/YqTjuFMUmFY/v-deo.html
      But if you are not heavily into text, don't dismiss Boox, they really are very good at what they do but notes are just really... another App where as the Supernote is more akin to being a Note App within itself.
      Hope that helps, and you're going to have to wait for about a months if you go for the A5X2 to come out.

      It's 1 mm thicker than the RM2, and is the 2nd thinnest E-Ink device in the world with a front light (2nd to only Lenovo Smart Paper at 5.5mm), so it's kinda hard to call that "very thick". As for writing experience, it's funny how subjective that is, I for example vastly prefer the writing experience of the NA3C as the writing latency is much faster, it feels less slippery and softer than the RM2 :)

    • @airestocky

      @@MyDeepGuide yes, indeed, very subjective. The edges are more "sharp" on the 3C, esp when writing at the lower parts of an page my palm doesn't feel good on those edges, while the RM2 is more rounded and that 1 mm is a huge number, the RM2 feels like a piece of paper, the 3C more like a tablet device. And the 3c is much more slippery - not on the screen but on the back, it slides over the table while RM2 has 4 rubber feets to avoid this.
      Man, to say it clear: I really appreciate your work - my personal experience is, after using the 3c for 2 months I went back to the RM2. Yes, the ink doesn't look as good as on the 3C, but the overall experience (thin, light weight, uniform user interface for eBooks, PDFs and Notebooks, uniform file management for all those doc types, direct access via App to all these doc types) brought me back to the RM2 (which was a big surprise for me to be honest - I really thought "better Specs = better Solution" - just my personal experience.

      They are much better as Vector exports, but that is true for all of the devices, except for the Kindle Scribe, which doesn't have that functionality. However, when exporting as a Vector based PDF, if you have a medium to a lot of entries, the file size will be a lot larger than the Bitmap PDF. So, since all will export largely the same as Vector PDF, and that has a file size burden associated with it (after a number of entries), that's why I wanted to test the more efficient version of exporting and how the platforms are handling it.

    • @MyDeepGuide

      I can check that, but I would guess that because it captures more details that this means more points, hence, more data. It all depends how the exporting is setup and if they do vector optimizations and how. But I do know from previous examples that ona 50 page written notebook, the size difference between a vector and a bitmap PDF export was huge.

    Thanks a lot for that great video (again) 🙂. One issue, though: Supernote offers two export settings, "Original" and "Vector". Vector is actually worlds apart (better), so I use only this option when exporting. But in your comparison you ignored this option. So it's not exactly apples to apples, IMHO. Supernote actually does a lot better than as it came out in your comparison.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  2 місяці тому

      Yes, I ignored it on all devices, because they all have (except Scribe, I think) that option, but with vector exporting there is no quality issues to really talk about, it will always be smooth as it is vector data (and way bigger in file size). The only valid point of comparison is to measure their rasterization quality levels of exporting is this. Vector data will be always the same on any platform, so there's no point in comparing it. Rasterization will not be the same, and is a smaller file size, therefore, more real-world usable for sharing the data, therefore, makes more sense to compare :)

    • @asdsadasdarwerasddaa

      @@MyDeepGuide Yes, I get your point. Still, IMHO this is a weakness of that comparison. I own an A5X and never use the "Original" option, always "Vector". So the first part of the video covered my usage pattern, the second not so much.
      However, the best option would really be to have a vectorized export as default, as Remarkable does it. My 2cts.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  2 місяці тому

      @@asdsadasdarwerasddaa Yes, I think that all devices should perform vectorization, and then they can rasterize it down to an image level, if the user chooses to export as an "image" or "bmp" or whatever name a specific platform uses for rasterized exporting option. That would definitely be a big benefit on the Supernote and is a missed opportunity, imo.

    • @RaduM1
      @RaduM1 2 місяці тому

      @@MyDeepGuide Usually exporting as vectors should result in smaller file size, not larger. But this depends on the resolution used to rasterize the content and the size of the color space. Monochrome images at low resolution could in fact be smaller than an SVG representation. But a 300dpi image using colors will use more memory than the SVG used to render it.
