- An interesting moment during the interview with couple #3: the rare contestant who is shown purposely trying to guess the secret word, by reciting a bunch of ones that had been commonly used. It doesn't work.
Strangely, Groucho is wearing a Windsor knot neck tie, not the bow tie he usually wore. Perhaps this was related to the bit with the pickpocket?
COUPLE #1: Dr. Giovanni, world's greatest pickpocket / Mentor Klein, who works in a book store
COUPLE #2: Clarence A. Shoop, a highly decorated air force general married to actress Julie Bishop / Edythe Marsh

No, but don't be sad . . . For one thing, back then, most of the film/TV stars started out in Vaudeville. There, the whole act was an interaction with the audience . . . a very different skill set from today's comedians, mostly.
Dr Giovanni is up there with Gonzales Gonzales as one of the best guests on this show.
Amazing how much high quality entertainment they squeezed into less than half an hour.

Dr. Giovanni was also from Hungary. Giovanni is his stage name. He and my grandfather were cousins. My grandfather used to tell us that he had a cousin in America who once pickpocketed Roosevelt as part of his show. We never thought much of it until I started digging into my family roots, and found out his real identity. His real name was Adolf Herzog. Born in Budapest. His father and my great grandfather were brothers.

Coincidently, Groucho died four days after Dr. Giovanni in August of 1977.

Joe Ambrose if you look up Dr Giovanni pickpocket, you can see his death date as August 15, 1977. Groucho died four days later.

His wife died of the same ailment in 2001.
After she refused to give her age, Groucho was done with her.

@deltabilly1: This was in 1955. Groucho was carrying $170.00 in his wallet by his count. According to the inflation calendar this is equal to $1092.00 today. That's quite a piece of change for anyone to carry in their wallet on a given day.

Pretty common place for that sort of thing in the 50s... No sound track back then, that was coming from a live band.

This is the only time I can recall seeing Groucho in a straight tie rather than the polka-dot bow tie he usually wore. The contestant naming words in an attempt to hit the secret word reminds me of the Jack Benny show from the same year (1955) in which Jack, as Ronald (Rodney) Forsythe, keeps naming items in his house while trying to hit the secret word "telephone."

You poor saps don't seem to understand Groucho. He was playing a character. The network, guests, studio audience, and home audience, all understood that. Politically incorrect? Certainly--By today's standards--Absolutely! Also, for the denser among you, the quiz was the LEAST part of the show... Which is why it changed so often over the course of the series, and why the rules were so loose. The most important part of the show, was ALWAYS the interaction between Groucho and the guests!
Politically incorrect by today's standards is likely a sign of superior morals.
I agree with almost everything with the exception of it was Groucho playing a character, Groucho didn't have an off switch, even when he was off he was on.

the various shows over the years of pickpockets of course were all staged and simply a comedy routine but we were dumb enough to believe it. person walks out they shake hands. then pickpocket hands them their underwear, watch, wallet, and their dentures. cant be done never has been done

Finally the California, Los Angeles smog is finally gone, when I was a kid in the 1960s, smoggy skies we're every day and always, thank God the smog is gone, now we have to deal with fire's and and a president who thinks he's a king or God, am speaking about Trump.
In Los Angeles you have to deal with your local government. You'll get a bail-out, we'll all be paying for you guys I guess. But that j ust means you won't change and you'll suffer longer in the end.
I'd say the ones who think they are kings are the establishment types who conspired against Trump. Trump has a big ego but no bigger than the other politicians. Trump's just brash. Trump did nothing king-like or dictator-like or god-like. You might not have smog but you could still use some fresh air.
