Another Sort of Freedom: Book Talk with Gurcharan Das

Organized by The Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute at Harvard University and the Harvard Club of India, the session hosted a conversation with Gurcharan Das on his much admired and humorous memoir, ‘Another Sort of Freedom‘, about one man’s struggle to give purpose and meaning to life - in his own words ‘Make a life, not just a living’. The talk was moderated by Hitesh Hathi, Executive Director of the Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute at Harvard University.
It took place on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at the multi-purpose Hall, Kamaladevi Complex, India International Centre, and on Zoom.
Gurcharan Das is a celebrated author and public intellectual. He graduated in philosophy with honors from Harvard University, and was later inducted into Phi Beta Kappa for ‘high attainments in liberal scholarship’. He also attended Harvard Business School(AMP) where he is featured in four case studies. He was CEO of Proctor &Gamble India, and Managing Director of Procter and Gamble Worldwide (Strategic Planning) before he retired at 50 to become a full-time writer. He has written eight remarkable books, the latest being ‘The Dilemma of an Indian Liberal’.
Hitesh Hathi is the Executive Director of The Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute at Harvard University. He brings over 20 years of experience from WBUR, Boston’s NPR station, most recently as Executive Producer of the show Radio Boston, and a deep, lifelong engagement with South Asia. Hitesh received his Master’s of Arts degree from Harvard in Sanskrit and Indian Studies, was a PhD candidate in the Department of South Asian Studies and has been an Assistant and Acting Resident Dean at Harvard’s Cabot House.
