Anyone who has lived this with a loved one - running out of the trailer with no shoes, no purse, maybe no clothes - and then having them take the abuser back - knows how heartbreaking it can be. And I guarantee that if he is let out, she would end up in the hospital or morgue. You could see him steaming at times during the conversation. I'm glad the judge reiterated to the victim and the accused that this is out of her hands. The state decides what happens now, based on testimony and actions of the parties involved, And it's so clear what his actions likely were and will be, and why her statement has changed. I hate the idea that HIS attorney, accepting HER money, basically gets to throw her under the bus. Mad respect to the judge.
I was severely abused as a child so when I had three relationships with men who eventually all abused me, they only got away with it once each. Then I took a break from relationships to find out how NOT to make those same mistakes and have now been in 24 years of blissful love. One strike ended the first one. One comment ended the second and the third was tougher to get away from but I pulled the plug by walking away from MY own business, losing a quarter of a million dollars in one day but it was worth every penny. Find your ground and stand on it proudly!
Even the Judge understood how perpetrators make themselves the victim and the victim is led to believe that the real problem is that they called for help.
We've gone too far the wrong way. Blacks fill the jails, rightfully, so to combat that we just stop enforcing laws. The law keeps violent people from harming others, let's enforce it before people stop believing in the govt all together

IMO: Sad part is “No Victim; No Crime” Never seen any victim prosecuted for perjury.. Much less admitted Perjury.. Just saying.. sad Prosecutors don’t convict without the “Alleged Victim” Sadly Many DV/TPO cases are filed and recommended by their attorneys in conjunction with Divorce/Child custody. Prosecutors just don’t do their job as prescribed by the rule of law..!! Thank you for sharing this very informative valuable Information. The answer is: Judges and Prosecutors cannot protect “Alleged Victims” Eventually they will get back together. Rinse Repeat then Rinse Repeat Cycle of abuse. If I was on the jury in this trial, I would absolutely throw the book at him for the simple fact that his victim said it was only “normal hitting”. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS NORMAL HITTING. She needs help, and he needs to be in jail.
With him in jail long term, and if she doesnt get help, she will in all probability she will find someone else who will treat her the same. So I hope she takes help and breaks the cycle.

All three of us wound up in abusive relationships. They could say it all they wanted, but they modeled the behaviors, so it didn’t exactly do much. The fact that you’re modeling the behavior you want your daughter to show when she’s older is a very helpful thing, and gives her a leg up.

As a current DV and SV/SA advocate with an understudy in behavior analysis, not only is the wheel of power applicable but so is the fact that most DV victims are not protecting the abuser per se but is protecting who they wish the abuser would be. They hold on to false hope that they can change the abuser not because they are incapable of seeing the danger but because they are incapable of letting go of the imaginary perspective the have created. In their mind, to do so would mean that they let everyone down and it’s there fault. Unfortunately until they let go of the fairytale, the work of advocates and the courts tend to be in vain more often than not.
Just a question. At what point it the victim held responsible for the choices they make? I'm speaking as a DV survivor. I had to admit to myself that although him beating me bad, I was getting something out of being in that situation or I wouldn't have stayed as long as I did. I had a therapist confront me about how I was participating in my demise. After taking responsibility for my emotional brokenness and mental health, I said no more and left for good. This was 25 years ago and I've never been in a situation like that again because I no longer ignore red flags or make excuses for people or for myself. I ask because if I hadn't been forced to face my own inner demons, I probably would have kept repeating this same cycle just without different men.
I so admire people who work with dv victims. I don’t know how they have the patience. Does anyone else think that her voice sounds like one that belongs to someone who drinks too much? (The judge should have her breathalized.) Her parents must be so worried.
My dau worked in a state prosecutor’s office in a state known to be lenient with abusers, even when they had multiple pictures as evidence. It was very frustrating.

There's such a fine line between victim blaming and recognizing that the victim also has a responsibility to protect themselves to the extent they are able. I think it's one of the things that gets so frustrating about watching people in these situations because even understanding the amount of control we're suffering, we still tend to make decisions that bring us back into the hot mess. ❤
This guy did all of the classic manipulator things. Immediately after the incident he spent days posting poems and loving sentiments aimed at his partner. He posted social media requests for sympathy and bail money. Turned himself totally into a victim. I am sure every conversation between them about this has been all about what SHE did to HIM. The manipulation is obvious and very depressing. I am extremely happy that the judge wasn't buying any of it for a second.

Judge Stevens is absolutely right on with his decision. I have NEVER been a judge and I won't ever be, but this Judge sees right through the balogny. This woman really needs help. She's fortunate that she's still living. The judge is absolutely spot on with his ruling!

I worked as a DV advocate many moons ago. One of the first things I learned was that you don't try to "choke" someone. That terminology is so misused. You STRANGLE people, not "choke" them. There is a massive difference and using the term "choke" greatly undermines the intimacy and rage involved in strangulation. This case is so extremely sad but not surprising to anyone who's worked in the field. I hope she manages to leave his sorry a$s safely before it's too late. (and side note: Judge Stevens is fantastic!)
His approach is harsh, but he must be so pissed,frustrated and tired of victims recanting their story. I agree. I also understand her because I'm a survivor of dv myself.
Being drunk or high or both is never an excuse. No one forced you to put alchahol down your throat. No one made you eat, smoke, snort, or inject any substance into yourself. You are an adult and are responsible for your actions!

Mike and Debbie, as a veteran counselor with 46 years of experience, I have had more DV cases than I wish I’d had. Far too many mirrored what we are seeing now. This woman is in grave danger the moment if or when this guy is released. She’d better make a pre-arranged funeral or someone will make them for her.
If I were the Judge, I would order these toxic love birds to have no contact with each other and for the defendant to find his own place outside of the county where the gf is living and working. Case dismissed.

I was in DV relationship 13 years ago and Debbie Davis is so right in her explanation of thinking as a victim. I really like that the judge is reading it all out loud. I think she needs to hear it out loud from a third party and how violent and insane it sounds. It may help. I’m ashamed to say I once gave money to a friend to bail out my ex because I couldn’t being his victim. It’s really gross how much they have your mind and I didn’t fully understand until almost a year after I escaped and had a clear mind. Scary part is that it doesn’t take long to start doubting yourself and second guessing every decision you try to make. 😢 27 min in and I feel like the judge might need just a little education on DV and the control a victim is under. He seems to be really harsh on her when the person who is accused of actually doing this to her is right there!! He has absolutely influenced her decision and that’s the part he needs better understanding of. I’m just glad the prosecutor is taking it out of her hands.
Is the defendant on the screen the abuser? If so, I feel like he should have been moved to a breakout room while he read all of the details, retaliation is a big thing with DV
I commend this judge for this rant. I am a domestic violence survivor and it is incredible how much manipulation and control the abuser maintains. Mine called me from jail telling me I needed to recant and had it not been for my advocate I may have tried. It’s so hard to get these abusers convicted as is and it’s no help when the victim is flakey due to the abusers manipulation. This judge is awesome! More victims need this tough love! I became an advocate to help women like me who need extra help to keep them on track to hold their abusers accountable.
As someone who suffered domestic violence for over 25 years. I feel absolutely terrible for this woman. I was trapped in the cycle of abuse with no way out. Staying in a secure building for women and children is the reason I am alive today. I received intensive counselling once a week and group therapy a couple times a week for an entire year. THIS SAVED MY LIFE!!!! It changed my entire thought process. Getting help and therapy is crucial!!! These victims are so beaten down and conditioned over such a long period of time. It takes time to untangle yourself from your abuser. Hopefully she can reach out before it's too late ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yeah, it is clear that she is confused. He certainly beat her and threatened to kill her, but she loves home. Love allows us to overlook some wild things, for a long time. The court didn’t handle this well. They need to support her, not brow beat her. However, they need to treat the man like the trash bin he is. He is worthless, less than. He is a leech on her and our society. I have empathy for her, she needs someone to dig in and explain what this lunatic is doing to her.

The judge obviously thinks this guy needs to do some jail time. That will clear his head and make him realize no one is playing and this is not a game. This is life in a civilized society.
As someone that was in a severely abusive relationship for just over six years, I hope this woman realizes she has to choose herself before he takes that option away from her. I remember my dad once asking me what my favorite flower was because he would need to know when planning my funeral. At the time I thought he was overreacting but looking back, I realize I am very lucky to still be here.

I came late to the party but went back to the beginning and was SO HAPPY to hear two little words from Debbie "I can", when you asked if she could confirm that Jenni Akers is alive. I know she's not supposed to talk about her cases and she takes professionalism very seriously but I'm glad she was at least able to give us that good news. It makes me feel better than a Facebook post that, thankfully seems like it was legit as you'd suspected, but of course would've been easy to fake if somebody wanted to make it look like she was okay when maybe she wasn't. Please thank Debbie for letting us know and I think we can all understand that's literally all she could say. I had arrived shortly before the normal hitting part that I superchatted asking if I heard right. I was so disturbed when I heard normal hitting, like being hit was just par for the course. But compared to being choked to unconsciousness and threatened with a propane torch I guess that makes 'normal hitting' somehow...less disturbing? Which in turn makes it even more disturbing. Oof! She needs to not be with that guy. I know that's easier for us to say and harder for her to do, but if he's strangling her and threatening to kill her with a blow torch I'm not sure she'll make it out alive the next time he gets ticked off.
This is very simple for me. Charge her. She is either admitting to a heinous crime by getting him charged illegally, or she is committing perjury to free a violent felon to hurt someone else. Either way lock them both up. They can rekindle their love with toilet kites.

I grew up in 2 dv households and my mother was a dv social worker for like 35 years, it's 100% true and not because the victim is dumb, or a coward, like Debbie said it's the wheel of power.
statistics show that a victim of domestic abuse leave their partner 6 times (and come back) before they actually leave for good. It's to do with fear, feeling helpless, being told time and time again that they can't make it in the world without the abuser.. it's such a mental ride.

The witness doesn’t have a lawyer looking out for her interests. Once the judge started his allegation-by-allegation review, she was in a situation where her own lawyer would advise her to decline to answer questions pursuant to her rights not to incriminate herself; she arguably has perjury risks as well as exposure to swearing a false document (or whatever that’s called under Texas law).
Being a DV survivor is a hella of a ride! Once it gets this far it’s better to let the law handle these situations and yes Mike your absolutely correct!!! I HOPE she’s truly listening to the judge! I can almost bet that this man really did all this and he’s letting her go down like this trying to lie for him.. 🤦🏻♀️

The man and his lawyer did the very thing the judge advised the woman not to do- painting the abuser as victim and the real victim as the one soley responsible for the abuser's behavior.
This makes me so mad. For all of us that have been abused like this and really wanted help to get out. Also, I had a friend. I gave her a place to escape and wanted her to stay without rent but she went back and was murdered by her husband.
I'm horrified by that scenario. To offer safety to a vulnerable friend, only for her to reject the offer, which then led her losing her life, I'd be peeved off. Tell me where is he now?

Judge Stevens is absolutely right on with his decision. I have NEVER been a judge and I won't ever be, but this Judge sees right through the balogny. This woman really needs help. She's fortunate that she's still living. The judge is absolutely spot on with his ruling!
Whether it's true or not, telling the judge that you signed your bond papers without reading them and/or paying attention to the conditions is not the brightest move... Duh! 🤦🏼♀ I love what this judge had to say. I've said it many times - our country needs to start getting more serious and tougher on DV and SA crimes. It's never ok...

I worked as a DV advocate many moons ago. One of the first things I learned was that you don't try to "choke" someone. That terminology is so misused. You STRANGLE people, not "choke" them. There is a massive difference and using the term "choke" greatly undermines the intimacy and rage involved in strangulation.
This case is so extremely sad but not surprising to anyone who's worked in the field. I hope she manages to leave his sorry a$s safely before it's too late.

Mike and Debbie, as a veteran counselor with 46 years of experience, I have had more DV cases than I wish I’d had. Far too many mirrored what we are seeing now. This woman is in grave danger the moment if or when this guy is released. She’d better make a pre-arranged funeral or someone will make them for her.

The defence attorney is in conflict by representing the defendant but knowingly being hired by the victim.
That domestic was seriously awful. That poor woman needs therapy to restore her soul. That man has stripped her of everything and destroyed her sense of self. The judge is right on throwing the book at this horrific criminal. I hope she gets it together. Life is precious and this POS is not worth giving your life away to.
He did to her what she ALLOWED him to do!!! If it's so horrible, why go back???? She asked him to come back! He is a scumbag, no doubt... But she is culpable as well...
I believe this judge is actually fair and spells out what's what. He is the epitome of what WE as the PEOPLE should expect and receive.
I was in DV relationship 13 years ago and Debbie Davis is so right in her explanation of thinking as a victim. I really like that the judge is reading it all out loud. I think she needs to hear it out loud from a third party and how violent and insane it sounds. It may help.
I’m ashamed to say I once gave money to a friend to bail out my ex because I couldn’t being his victim. It’s really gross how much they have your mind and I didn’t fully understand until almost a year after I escaped and had a clear mind. Scary part is that it doesn’t take long to start doubting yourself and second guessing every decision you try to make. 😢
27 min in and I feel like the judge might need just a little education on DV and the control a victim is under. He seems to be really harsh on her when the person who is accused of actually doing this to her is right there!! He has absolutely influenced her decision and that’s the part he needs better understanding of. I’m just glad the prosecutor is taking it out of her hands.
Is the defendant on the screen the abuser? If so, I feel like he should have been moved to a breakout room while he read all of the details, retaliation is a big thing with DV
I commend this judge for this rant. I am a domestic violence survivor and it is incredible how much manipulation and control the abuser maintains. Mine called me from jail telling me I needed to recant and had it not been for my advocate I may have tried. It’s so hard to get these abusers convicted as is and it’s no help when the victim is flakey due to the abusers manipulation. This judge is awesome! More victims need this tough love! I became an advocate to help women like me who need extra help to keep them on track to hold their abusers accountable.
If UPS knows of this or is watching this both of these people should be fired. They represent UPS.

As someone who suffered domestic violence for over 25 years. I feel absolutely terrible for this woman. I was trapped in the cycle of abuse with no way out. Staying in a secure building for women and children is the reason I am alive today. I received intensive counselling once a week and group therapy a couple times a week for an entire year. THIS SAVED MY LIFE!!!! It changed my entire thought process. Getting help and therapy is crucial!!! These victims are so beaten down and conditioned over such a long period of time. It takes time to untangle yourself from your abuser. Hopefully she can reach out before it's too late ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yeah, it is clear that she is confused. He certainly beat her and threatened to kill her, but she loves home. Love allows us to overlook some wild things, for a long time. The court didn’t handle this well. They need to support her, not brow beat her. However, they need to treat the man like the trash bin he is. He is worthless, less than. He is a leech on her and our society. I have empathy for her, she needs someone to dig in and explain what this lunatic is doing to her.
I understand the judges anger towards her. But like you two ladies I was in a $hitty marriage for 25 yrs. I tried leaving 4x and the 5th was final. I spent alot of $$ to divorce him but worth my freedom. Been divorced for 3 years and my life is brilliant and full of joy. No dating for me. I'm far too much at peace to mess with it. As someone that was in a severely abusive relationship for just over six years, I hope this woman realizes she has to choose herself before he takes that option away from her. I remember my dad once asking me what my favorite flower was because he would need to know when planning my funeral. At the time I thought he was overreacting but looking back, I realize I am very lucky to still be here.
Love this judge. He gives me a renewed confidence in the justice system and the rules of professional conduct for attorneys.

Also, i lived around beaumont until i was 24. Absolutely bottom of the barrel human beings. It would be as bad as Chicago if they weren't so lazy.
I came late to the party but went back to the beginning and was SO HAPPY to hear two little words from Debbie "I can", when you asked if she could confirm that Jenni Akers is alive. I know she's not supposed to talk about her cases and she takes professionalism very seriously but I'm glad she was at least able to give us that good news. It makes me feel better than a Facebook post that, thankfully seems like it was legit as you'd suspected, but of course would've been easy to fake if somebody wanted to make it look like she was okay when maybe she wasn't. Please thank Debbie for letting us know and I think we can all understand that's literally all she could say.
I had arrived shortly before the normal hitting part that I superchatted asking if I heard right. I was so disturbed when I heard normal hitting, like being hit was just par for the course.
But compared to being choked to unconsciousness and threatened with a propane torch I guess that makes 'normal hitting' somehow...less disturbing? Which in turn makes it even more disturbing.
Oof! She needs to not be with that guy. I know that's easier for us to say and harder for her to do, but if he's strangling her and threatening to kill her with a blow torch I'm not sure she'll make it out alive the next time he gets ticked off.
This is very simple for me. Charge her. She is either admitting to a heinous crime by getting him charged illegally, or she is committing perjury to free a violent felon to hurt someone else.
Either way lock them both up. They can rekindle their love with toilet kites.

Is there no accountability for the defense attorney here? She hired him to defend her husband and brings her in to testify. By testifying, she is potentially exposing herself to a perjury charge. Why is this not a huge conflict of interest?

I grew up in 2 dv households and my mother was a dv social worker for like 35 years, it's 100% true and not because the victim is dumb, or a coward, like Debbie said it's the wheel of power.

statistics show that a victim of domestic abuse leave their partner 6 times (and come back) before they actually leave for good. It's to do with fear, feeling helpless, being told time and time again that they can't make it in the world without the abuser.. it's such a mental ride.

The witness doesn’t have a lawyer looking out for her interests. Once the judge started his allegation-by-allegation review, she was in a situation where her own lawyer would advise her to decline to answer questions pursuant to her rights not to incriminate herself; she arguably has perjury risks as well as exposure to swearing a false document (or whatever that’s called under Texas law).

Being a DV survivor is a hella of a ride! Once it gets this far it’s better to let the law handle these situations and yes Mike your absolutely correct!!! I HOPE she’s truly listening to the judge! The man and his lawyer did the very thing the judge advised the woman not to do- painting the abuser as victim and the real victim as the one soley responsible for the abuser's behavior.
This makes me so mad. For all of us that have been abused like this and really wanted help to get out. Also, I had a friend. I gave her a place to escape and wanted her to stay without rent but she went back and was murdered by her husband.
I'm horrified by that scenario. To offer safety to a vulnerable friend, only for her to reject the offer, which then led her losing her life, I'd be peeved off.
