To me, The Fall Guy was the perfect popcorn flick. It’s a shame the marketing team didn’t know how to sell it. I’ve watched it five times, and you pick up new little details every time.
Cool video. Late Night With The Devil used it's practical effects so well, so strategically. My enjoyment of that movie really hinges on how much retro fun the effects provide.
I’m glad you pointed out the practical effects of Furiosa. It annoyed me that so many people ignored them in favor of saying it was “too cgi” I know I was yapping about Rebel Moon on the VFX post, but I think it had some pretty incredible practical effects as well, mainly for the makeup with the aliens, especially Jena Malone as the freaky spider lady
The practical was really cool for Rebel Moon! I just feel like they did so much CGI and VFX to everything that you couldn't even really appreciate some of the practical stuff. Just my opinion of course
I think it's because the crap CGI will always pull you out of what otherwise would have been a good movie, especially when the other movie everyone is going to compare it to is the practical-effects driven Mad Max (with the ending-ruined-by-absolutely-horrendous-CGI excluded, of course.) It's hard not to complain about it.
6:16 The James Bond Record was a "plan B" for that movie. They wanted to flip the Aston with a ramp, but the thing was so planted that it would just return to all four wheels and slide to a stop (after almost taking out a crew member in rehearsals). So they installed the pneumatic canon-system, and decided "if we do it like this, let's go BIG"
Nice ad segue 😉 Props. The forest fire was pretty cool but not sure it was worth the risks. I'm glad CGI is replacing the riskiest stunt work considering how many in that line of work still die or suffer catastrophic injuries. Practical makeup effects are still highly appreciated but CGI is getting to the level that brings impossible worlds/dreams to life and I'm here for it.
As a 3D artist inspired by practical effects to begin with, I'm so glad you made this video to highlight the return of practical, and a lot of these films I didn't know about and will now check out! Subscribed!
"It took about 45 minutes to get them out of the harness and back into it again." Does that include the regular time for a human poop, which is 42 minutes?
The zero-g effect was solved ages ago; you turn the scene on its side and use vertical movement for forward and backward. Easy for everyone involved and very convincing due to much of the obvious tells with wirework not being an issue. Any production not doing it like that is just wasting money and effort.
8:26 The reason there's no "Oscar for stunts" (there are the Taurus Awards, which are ONLY for stunts) is that the academy doesn't want stunt crews to be pushed to negligent attempts in order to secure the award.
I've heard that argument but justmake each nominee have to present safety records and accounts of how they safely did stuff. Make safety a part of the calculus for the award.
Primarily the effect is with Film Converts emulation software that features halation. I add a couple other blur filters in there as well but then with the test I do a bit of a black border around it so the halation has something to bleed over to give it that pronounced halation effect. In the description, I have links to the discounted emulation software! They are actually one of our long term sponsors and are super great!
Great vid, and thanks for acknowledging CGI Would be rad to get a moment more warning to skip sections before big spoilers though - mostly not a big deal, but the Substance reveal was a bummer
Never been a "Dune-er" not with the book or the 1984 version. My wife enjoyed both of these, but I consider the story as "Dallas" for "Dynasty" in space.
Wait, you telling me that the Oscars doesn't have awards for best stuntman performances etc? That's criminal considering how straight up crucial they are to making things happen in movies of so many genres...
Tbh I didn't see that film didn't really see anything that interesting when I looked at it for the list. Tbh, we could spend 2 hours or more talking practical effects this year 😅
And in Challengers they also had a robot-knee that actually broke! Pretty cool and there are pictures of it online. Maybe they replaced it with cgi eventually but hey
(Has anyone felt like a lot of media lately has a similar look? This hyper clean, almost fake, look?) I just really feel that Hollywood used to be so much better at figuring out how to create a visually appealing aesthetic for each project. Now there's this weird fixation on this bland realism? We need to bring back all sorts of different techniques we used to use in order to create a certain atmosphere and feel to different movies. We need to reconnect with different VFX techniques and practical techniques as well, also this one's very important we need to bring back animation!
theres plenty of visually diverse movies out there, anyone that claim otherwise honestly needs to expand their horizons beyond not only just hollywood productions but also to foreign productions. also animation never went away, just because people want to be elitists about it doesnt mean 3d animation shouldnt count. some of the best animated movies out there are 3d animated. it also ignores the renaissance animation has been going through as of recent years, and the absolute bangers of movies we been having.
@@formula93 I know this was an odd video to post this on but I felt like it was still relevant because media has had a weird look to it lately & it's less common to see good art design & execution nowadays..
The Cyan filter you mentioned about Nosferatu... I now get curious. Is that the same filter they used to make the panchromatic black and white negative behave like orthochromatic in The Lighthouse?
Supposedly it's a new filter specifically made for this film. Unfortunately the details are a bit vague on it currently but we cover it a bit more in depth on our Nosferatu video!
A distinct lack of Terrifier 3's INSANE practical effects is present here (though thise clips would certainly make a video quite hard to monetize on UA-cam!)
No love for Terrifier 3? Whether your thing or not, the whole franchise’s successful run has been built on the use of practical effects, which are alarmingly good and important given the penchant to do everything in post these days. Besides the villain, the story of how these films came to be are built on the talent of the creator-a major proponent of practical- now slowly becoming a horror director to be mentioned with some of the greats. Plus a $2M budgeted film nearing $100M box office shouldn’t be ignored.
This is so cool!!! To me, it feels like Hollywood has not been caring about practical effects as much because there's so much c.G.I everywhere, but I loved being proved wrong!!!
I think it's more productions have gotten a lot better at integration between practical and digital and opening more lines of communication between departments during principal filming and pre-production. Both digital and practical effects have a part to play and nothing is really all practical anymore. I'm always happy to see the collaboration between the 2 makes something special!
