I met Thom very briefly at JFK on my way to LA. Didn't know much about him, but I recognized him from a GQ article a few years ago, and his distinct style always stuck with me for some reason. It was really cool to cross paths with him so randomly. I was standing right behind him in line for security, recognized him by his signature suit-shorts, and asked "Are you Thom Browne?" He just looked at me with an expression that was about as grey as his palette, and dryly said "Yes." We didn't say anything else to each other until we were both packing our things away after security, and this time he cracked a quick smile as he was walking away with his travel partner, and I was stuffing my Macbook back into my overstuffed duffel bag, and he just said "Have a good flight." Coolest guy ever. Haha.
Thom inspired my love for grey and uniformity. I’m a graphic designer and I’ve learned the concept of self-branding from him and adapted grey as my key color.
Yay! So glad this series is back. I just wish the NYTimes did videos exploring the work of other professionals at the top of their fields as well, e.g. famous chefs etc
well I'm not one bit surprised that Thom Browne's working space looks like a mental asylum. Super intimidating. I don't even know why I like his stuff so much, I just find it fascinating and have liked everything he's ever done. wierd dude.
Mr. Browne is a very unique designer, his collections always leave me in a state of intrigingness, ....after watching one of his show, I will always think to myself, what other designs would he come up next? his show is like a big fantasy world, ......sometimes I often wonder what's the idea behind the show, what's theme this year? it was really fun to watch it
It was a little weird to see every employee dressed the same on a commercial we shot for Thom Browne. I didn't think they looked too happy having to wear them, but what do I know. Thom Browne seemed nice, he thanked most of the crew individually.
I work at Thom Browne’s boutique in Hamad Airport in Qatar. Lemme tell u; although the suits they give us are extremely expensive and luxurious; we don’t really enjoy them because of how hot they feel especially in a weather like the one in Qatar. But the staff treatment is better than the other brands present at the airport. It’s like we have a special treatment of our own
@@ShotsMerkzAllin relation to the location i worked in. It’s still open it’s in Hamad International Airport in Qatar. Feel free to visit there anytime you are in Qatar
I'm kinda wondering how many in the comments down here would ACTUALLY wear his stuff if his designs were not how they are, which are essentially multiple levels and ranges of reimagining of the grey suit, from casual to intricate. That said, I kinda like what seems to be his all-encompassing mindspace that somehow birthed his style... this dilemma between the insistence on tradition and the need for said tradition to be constantly poked from just about any direction with variation and creativity. There's an "I wanna feel special, but not be loud or attention-grabbing" kind of vibe to his designs that makes it for me, like grey embellishments and visuals on a grey garment - the art and expression is still there, but it doesn't feel the need to be a megaphone about it. I think that kind of comfort of being expressive but not being too trying hard with it sounds like a real prevailing mood to most people, especially those who are not necessarily fashion people but have a clear intention of wanting to look good on their own terms. So again, I'm kinda wondering how many in the comments down here would ACTUALLY wear his stuff if his designs were not how they are
most of his designs are very simple (just add three red, white and blue lines or 4 white lines on one sleeve). i wouldn't pay 4k for some stripes, just saying...
He may not be able to express himself that way so he has other people help him to do that. I have many ideas but to actually bring them to fruition is difficult.
+Um Hu It was for service people, like waiters and bus boys. Personally, I find it worked for Thom Browne, but would indeed look horrendous on most other people. I will say that having a tie clip and tucking the tie into the waist is superfluous.
+thePowerPlant Pierce Brosnan sported it (tie tucking) in Remington Steele. He was immaculately dressed for that show- more so than the Multi-million dollar outings as James Bond.
superlyger I have found people dressing in period clothing look the best when tucking their ties in their trousers. There are the few who can really pull it off.

I can't with the shorts and suit. I mean if you are incredibly leg-gifted, go for it. I actually have amazing legs for a man...but for the man with ugly legs...no. Thom Browne does not look good in his shorts.

Yo that's Daniel Roseberry in the background at 1:53! Crazy to see him heading Schiaparelli now
2:17 the man himself, D. Roseberry!
It's a very pleasant surprise to see him in this video 😄

That's what makes his styles so great. Very classic.
Crystal Punky Weird is fun!
A true minimalist , making it work beautifully. Gray is timeless ! I love your esthetic of choice being limited.
Designers need to be individualistic...and he is very much that way.It is ok...to do it your way. .and feel good about it...Great interview
Intense dedication. I don’t think his ‘work’ is clothing, it’s Art. Self-made.
He and John Galliano walk on water!!!!! Amazing. Divinely inspired.
I've met him 3 times very easy going man
Для театра и кино то, что надо. Блестяще!!! Браво! 🏆
seems like a pretty unique guy
Wish I lived in Thom's world.
His NYFW S/S 2016 show was wondrous

perfect from head to knees!
Desde Argentina thank you for sharing
Great Vid, Love it
very wes andersonish. Thom browne should be in his movies.
that guy knows his challenging shapes!
He is very unique. The world needs to know more about Thom Browne. Such fresh designs and aesthetic
Jennifer Not really LOL
Thom Browne is totally singular.
He is as rarified as was Alaïa.
There is no comparable to these inimitable men.
Nonsense, there are other freaks like Rick Owens etc.
This was a wonderful interview on Thom Browne. He is amazing !
lol the music themes keep on changing
Should have called his brand Thom Grey
I wonder what he would say to someone who came in wearing orange lol
Interesting interview.

Anybody know the music? Great video.
I was just waiting for someone to say the name thom
Wearing Shorts with a tie suit jacket . American Haute Couture 😂

I agree why isn't this guy designs in movies
Thom is so hot
He is a power bottom
So is his husband

what a professional weirdo, nice.

It annoys me when a designer does not produce design sketches and relies on other peoples interpretations of their concepts.

He has his tie tucked into his waist. That looks horrendous to me, and didn't know that was an actual thing.

His clothing is bad I have his shoes
I like his drawings more than his clothes. Awful. Would never spend money on a bespoke suit that looks intentionally ill-fitting.
he actually looks ridiculous
Expensive for nothing, never understood why the prices are so expensive than some leading brands
I dont like anything he has every done. I feel he is very self important and not even as relevant as he would like to think he is.
They've created nice eyewear but not much as far as clothing. Most of his clothing is pretty boring.
looks like he's stuck in the 50s with his office furniture. and i didn't see any tech - computer, tablet, etc.
Also looks like his suit was tailored on a tight budget.
that's his signature "cut"
This guy is sooooo ridicolous

But we need more people like this. So we have something to comment on. It's his job to provoke you.
i never realized how handsome he is, because honestly, his fashion is lowkey ugly and distracts from his face
That's a very well crafted compliment to his fashion.

But that helps others feel better about themselves. Maybe that's his goal? That his audience is comfy under their skin...
