Rendering - Students of Product Design Episode 04

  • In Episode 4 of students of Product Design, I'm mainly looking at using photo editing software to render hand drawn design sketches to make my product design presentation sheets look more professional. Having photographed a sketch and imported it into Photoshop, I cover a simple set of techniques that I use for all my presentation sheets, laying down a base colour, an effect when necessary, shadows and highlights. To understand the idea behind this, I look at materials and the different properties they have, how they react to light and easy ways to look at this and apply what you see to your presentation sheets.
    The most important message in this video is that most of the time I don't know what's right, but over the years I have developed a good eye for what's wrong with my presentation sheets, a bad perspective, the wrong colour etc, so all I do is keep making my sketches less wrong and each time I do this they creep closer to being right. This is all I do when designing a product, I keep tweaking each part of the design until it's as good as I can make it.
    At the end of the video I look at how to develop a brand language that can be applied to other products as a company diversifies its product range and expands in to other markets. Lots of industrial designers cleverly use colour, form, texture, materials and a logo to strengthen a brand and reinforce its values with consumers. The example I create is a bit tongue in cheek and very cheesy, but hopefully shows the basics of how it's done.
    I hope you enjoyed Students of Product Design episode 4. If you have any questions, let me know - I do try to answer everyone who asks a question, but sometimes it's not possible if the question is asked through Google Hangouts etc. PT

    I have been looking for you for 2 years. I cannot believe how much information you have packed into your series.. This is EVERYTHING a new Ind design student needs to know to understand all the gibberish they have been teaching...I cant believe it. In 5 videos, you have answered more questions about how to be a good student, how to solve problems, how to create products and showcase them and create a portfolio that will get me jobs than I've gotten out of my very expensive uni in 2 years, including paying $2700 to take a course on portfolio prep!!! They should all pay you to rent this series and run it at the start of each school year and if you havent thought about that, please do...THIS IS VALUABLE!!!

    I am so glad I've came across your channel and this video specifically!!
    I am in my final year of a product design degree. Rendering and using promarkers have always been my weakest points. This video helped me understand massively how to render my drawing to go into my dissertation.
    Although I have no idea how to use photoshop at all. I'm hoping I'll be able to learn it within a few months just in time for my work. I cannot thank you enough for this video. I have subscribed you to now!
    But could you make a video explaining where, how big and what colour I should colour in the background of the drawings?
    If you can, can you also do a tutorial of how to render and the features to use on photoshop too?
    Thank you very much. I am definitely going to revisit your videos over and over again in the next few months.

    • @producttank
      @producttank  8 років тому +1

      Hi iMingles, background colour depends on the product you're designing and if it's rendered in colour, you don't want anything that clashes or confuses the eye and takes focus away from the design, so something light, soft tones, greys etc, non offensive stuff. There are lots of photoshop tutorials about, it's best you get photoshop first, then watch a few and start practising, but all my backgrounds in PS are made with the marquee tool filled with either a paintbrush or gradient tool. Nice work, it look you designed everything in this video including the music in the end of the video. One question, how many hours do you take to make one of your youtube video?

    • @producttank
      @producttank  9 років тому +1

      Ali Buhlaiqa Its probably a good thing I don't record how long it takes, the short answer is it takes a long time. I only get the chance to work on projects on some evenings and on weekends. It takes a bit to write the script and I'm not very good at recording the narration to camera pieces, so I have to do several takes. All the music in the video's is my own, but I make this when I have some spare time. I wish I could make them faster. PT

    Hello professor. In your video. When you talk about Rendering, I thought you will use software like Rhino or maybe Solidwork , but you used the photoshop. I'm surprised about that, becuase teacher haven't teach me that we can use PS to rendering my work.
    However, I also have question about why you don't use Rhino or Solidwork. Does it not important in product design process?

    • @producttank
      @producttank  3 роки тому

      Hi Ting-Yu, great question. It's about what methods are best to communicate the idea, shape etc to the client and depends on the project. I grew up sketching and for me, sketches to a client don't appear fixed, they are more open for discussion and changes, which for me is important early in a project. Cad images can appear to a client as though the project is finished, when there is still a lot to do. But, as cad has become better, lots of design companies use it much earlier in the process and it can streamline the process from ideas to prototypes, presentations and final design much quicker, leading to cost savings. There isn't necessarily any right or wrong, but generally you want to use the method that helps the client make informed decisions and move the project forward in the most professional way. When I made the video, I chose to draw and use photoshop because that's how I was taught, but I'm not the future, you are and the methods change all the time as technology moves forward. I hope this makes sense. PT

    • @producttank
      @producttank  3 роки тому

      I want to add that even though companies are using cad in some cases at the ideation stage, I still feel sketching and hand rendering is still a really important and useful skill. For me it will always be the fastest way to generate ideas. Many designers are now using drawing apps and tablets etc to draw and render. If you have time, look at Michael DiTullo's UA-cam channel.

I would like upgrade my skills in aesthetics design and would be much grateful if You can give me some practical pointers(maybe a procedure) for generating aesthetic design ideas...
