- Following a week of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian government announced the creation of the 'Ukrainian Foreign Legion' and invited volunteers with military experience from around the world to come to Ukraine to fight against the Russians. Last week, the Russian government's press secretary announced that Russia would be employing the services of Syrian mercenaries from Bashar Al-Assad's army to join the fighting in Ukraine. In this video we'll explore why Russia wants Syrian troops, what this means for the conflict, and how these might be used.

There is a group of Syrians who has been living since 90th in Ukraine. They also accepted refugees from the civil war in Syria. Some of them became part of territory defenses forces, particularly in Odesa.

Why does anyone send mercenaries/foreign troops? 1)They won't be as reluctant as some of your own troops might feel, given you share same ethnicity, similar language and common history; 2)You're much less under public scrutiny. Plus, should they die, they don't truly feel like your own people, therefore you won't lose as much face publicly.
Yeah, for real, I don't know why anyone cares. Like they're making such a big deal about it, 5:07, like ohh yeah real scary and harsh, that they're "murderers" and puppy killers, great. Thing reported widely in ex Yugoslavian media from the beginning of the war in 2015 is Serbian- Croatian ultranationalists stand off there. Serbian volunteers from Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro... joined DPR or LPR volunteer forces, while Croats (from Bosnia or Croatia) served in the Azov Battalion, some parts of the ultras groups of Dinamo soccer club. And that's still the case. Many Serbian and Croatian volunteers are now joining other sides associating another side in the conflict with "Ukraine/Croatia ww2 nazis and Russian-Serbian fraternity" thing, or with "Soviet-Yugoslavian communist neocolonialism ruled by Serbs-Russians over other states" thing, depending on the side. That's similar with Syrians fighting on both sides, as Chechens. Their internal political hatred is fought on the fronts of Ukraine. I thought it might be interesting for you.

I think these syarian soldiers will be paid as they are told, these people have been fighting and countering riestance since 2000s since the instablilty in middle east these people are more experienced professionals have years of experience with them and are experts, I think they know they are on the bad guy's side but they are getting paid, unlike the Ukrainian legion which is mostly inexperienced citizens from different countries who decided to help I don't oppose that but these people are new and need months of trainings which Ukraine just doesn't have time for, while these soldiers have years of experience these soldiers will be paid.

$1800 per soldier and up to 16000 soldiers is quite large sum of money Russia might desperately need right now for their own economy. If that was the case, we'll hear story of unpaid Syrian merc sent to Ukraine soon.

On the topic of Syrian anti-Assad fighters volunteering for Ukraine, according to 'The New Arab' and 'The Syrian Observer' outlets, one Suhail Muhammad Hamoud "Abu TOW" declared that he wants to fight for Ukrainians. Apparently, he made quite a name for himself in Syria, specifically for destroying tanks.
“Abu” means “adopted son”, right? So Abu TOW means “adopted son of the Tube-launched Optically-tracked Wire-guided missile”.
He likes this American-made anti-tank weapon so much he adopted it as his father!
When a Russian says there’ll be an evacuation corridor it means just as much as when Trump says “believe me”. To wit, nothing.

It's the Base for the Russian baltic fleet so it's very important to them, it's also prob a nuke site given its proximity to several European cities

the serbs made it one, with the failure of communism to keep yugoslavia together, nationalism started to emerge that was suppressed by the Communist system, nationalistic Serbs wanted to create a greater Serbia so started by taking control of the governments of the other republics in Yugoslavia to politically dominate Yugoslavia, when that failed, they resorted to war to force Yugoslavia to stay together.

we in syria literally make like 20$ a month....it takes about 4 to 5 months for a syrian to make a 100$...living conditions are on the "if you wont die today from hunger then you will tomorrow" difficulty for the past 7 years or so.

@aaaa food prices have adapted to the current exchange rate (so far) and the government subsidize some stuff so basically our continued existance as living human beings is simply a miracle.....I for one am a university student and my job makes me about 50 cents a day ...a biscuit or a pack of noodles from a store is literally an entire week worth of financial planning

Bruh the “Syrian tactics” are just Russian and Red Army tactics, the Russian Way of War is a great book on how the Russian military operates. Assad and his military never invented the tactics you spoke of, the Russians did a long time ago.
Only before the war Syrian tactics was based on Soviet army. Now Syrian tactics are very different than before the war after learning from the war
Ther are some differeces beteween the sovjet army and the nowadys russian army. When you look closer on it you even will see tactics used by the americans in iraq like to guard convois with choopers.

@@gog_magpie It's not quite the same with the US in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya. The foreigners involved in that were sent by sovereign nations at the US' request, not foreign mercenaries hired by them. The main reason for this being optics, trying to give the impression that the world was on the US' side, rather than bringing them in because they needed them.
Note that I specifically said *foreign* mercenaries. I know full well about the domestically-based PMCs that were hired.
Some advantage of hiring them is 1) They’re not from the area so they don’t care about the people at all 2) they’re experienced from a decade of fighting; especially urban combat. 3) if they die then you don’t lose more Russians. Although some downsides are: 1) they’re less motivated. 2) not used to the region or it’s climate. And 3) very limited as Assad isn’t going to be allowing whole battalions to go when they’re still needed.
If they die Syria loses. Nobody considers Syria, but Ukraine is a repeat of Syria. Think about the people who are dying

The Russians didn't really consult the Syrians on this and Syrian aren't in much of a position to do this frankly. It must also be noted that the tactics used in Syria were done so by both sides. My information comes from location.

Well, if their logistics is too bad for their regular troops, I can't see how these mercenaries can help and also how they want to pay them.
What are the chances that were just told there to go as a favor to putin since some of them are from Assad's Governent and then lied to about being paid? As much coverage as there is going about this war there is a chance that these mercenaries don't know about how bad the situation is since much of the information I've seen is from Western media/YT sources. I haven't seen pro-putin news sources outside of Russia so I can't tell if they're saying the same thing.
If you really think the Russian logistics are bad, then are are truly fooled by the Western media coverage

I think it’s a dual purpose of one this Syrian mercenaries are better trained or equipped to fight urban combat one and also the conscript Russians at the front lines have been very under equipped and underwhelming in their force and maybe these are to prop that up or give some injection of morale or capability to the front line conscript units

Additionally, Syrians and Chechens don’t have the same cultural similarities with Ukrainians that Russians do. They’d be more willing to fight.

Many countries have conscription, Ukraine included, but keep in mind that a - the bulk of Russian military is still the professional military you can only join after your year of conscription is over, b - to legally send conscripts into battle Russia has to impose a martial law first, which they didn't. And why do you say their action does not look professional? The front lines are being pushed deeper into Ukrainian territory day by day even in official Kiev public reports if you look at the map while reading them. Russia stuck at Kharkiv, true, but on the other fronts they push forward. Russians do not take complete control over every small city they pass through but in terms of operative space they pretty much control the area.

@@El_Jefe_Maestro I'd argue the mass of Russian equipment used (T-72B3, Su-25) is superior to those of the rebels in Syria but inferior to the latest tech and intel the West provides to Ukraine. While Russia theoretically owns some modern equipment such as T-14 and SU-57 they either can not or do not want to spend it in significant numbers in Ukraine. Maybe because both could easily fall prey to NLAW/Javelin or MPADs.

I have also seen a video floating around of a supposed Syrian fighter talking about how we went to Ukraine to get arms. In the video you can see multiple M16 rifles and either an NLAW or a javelin.

The reason is pretty simple even if you go by the conservative end of realistic estimates of Russian casualties, including wounded and captured they have lost more then 10% of their initial deployed combat effective forces.
I believe Russia and Ukraine have lost a similar amount of troops (around 5,000 each) but Ukraine has far more foreign support which is a plus for them

Most Syrian's will not stay long in Ukraine for this reason alone, the weather and illnesses that come with it. This could cut down the amount substantially as when Germany had in ww2 against Russia.

Since you added it , I would like to mention that there are several videos and testimonies especially from the Greek minority in Mariupol which claim that they were not allowed by Ukrainian national guard members to evacuate the area . A convoy barely managed to leave due to the large amount of people which had gathered because the Ukrainians didn't wish to escalate the situation with the Russians on their doorstep.
I'm not an expert so take this with a bucket of salt, mercenaries seems to scare the shit out of people especially when they are from war turn countries, it creates this myth that they are hardened and will be difficult to kill, that's not the case.
Mercs are only as good as their experience and gear/logistics allow them to be as well as how well they can filter Intel into tactics and battle plans, in the case of Syrians unless they get some of the most battle tested unit which is the tiger forces (even at that I don't trust that they'd hit a tank sized target at a 100m) their chances of going in and causing a major shift in combat on the frontlines is slim, they're most likely to be disorganized and impulsive on the trigger, their best bet is urban warfare other than that it would be a miracle if they don't get slaughtered by the Ukrainians.

@daniiel mlinarics where is the claim that Chechens are shooting Russian deserters? It's not at all strange that the Chechens are being used as rear echelon troops. Specifically, the Military Police. This is because Russia used a contingent of Chechen military police in Syria as they are Muslims. So I would expect that the Chechens have experienced military policemen.
Also, there's another group of Chechens who are deployed as shock troops, and I daresay that their success rate is even higher than the Russian regulars.

If I were to guess it would be their urban combat experience. I’d imagine that the thought of stopping the USA from manipulating themselves into having boots in yet another country is a good selling point to the Syrians as well.

Many people suspect it's because Russia's military is apparently weak but it seems odd considering the strength of their combined forces and that Russia accounts for 19% of all global arms exports right behind the US at 35%.

Well they're getting sanctioned in every sector: semiconductors, telecommunication, aviation, electronics, automotive industry, shipping etc. most of the world's production powerhouses are cutting ties with the Russians and their economy is slowly collapsing. You can't manufacture Sukhois and S-400s without semiconductors and other components.
@@gomiladroogies5951 They are actually running out of expensive munitions like PGMs and Cruise missiles and yes they are relatively weak in reality contrary what people see in media or Kremlin's propaganda. Their logistics and production capabilities are severely lacking and years behind western powers. Their nominal GDP is lower than California, Texas or New York and per-capita is lower than Mississippi itself. The reason they appear so strong is because Russia spends 3x times more of it's Budget on the military than countries with a comparable economy, so it has far more military hardware and personnel, the problem is that their oil/gas-dependent economy can't sustain those numbers unlike the US for example so they can't support an invasion(at least not without severe economic consequences). They're bound to collapse.
Also US officials warned about the imminent invasion and most dismissed it as propaganda yet here we are, so I'm willing to believe western officials over whatever nonsense comes from the Kremlin or Beijing.

Hey. I lived in Kiev/Kyiv for 4 months and nobody pronounces it "Qu" it's more like Keu-yiv. The и in Ukrainian is pronounced very similarly to the ы in Russian and the Ï character is pronounced like yi/yee. Maybe people in Lviv or the Western villages pronounce it like you did but if so I never heard them do so.

I do lots of dialectology and I can't think of a hovirka that would turn it into a yu/ou kind of dyphtong. I suspect either someone used the standard way people often explain y as (something between e and u) to explain the pronunciation or they might've tried to clumsily explain Hilbert the v->"lip u" transition and he got confused
