When I was a teenager, I fell in love with this movie, and would watch it on repeat. I'd started watching it again the past few nights, and forgot how much I loved it. What I love about it is how it just stays intense, the characters, the plot, the music, the whole way through. It's the art of the chase, I think. It never lets up. But I had no idea this ending even existed. Crazy!

This is the version I saw in the theater on opening night, and I was very confused seeing the standard ending on the DVD. When I posted my thoughts on IMDB, people thought I was misremembering, then another edition (laser disc?) with the alt-ending started popping up on video channels, that was apparently released theatrically in certain areas and I was vindicated.

This was on the DVD but not included on the Bluray . This was a great film about a bunch of ex operatives who are still in the business but on their own . They don't make action films like this anymore with real car chases with a bunch of great actors . In a way we wanted her to go down to the café but she didn't and paid the price for being with Shamus and the IRA got her . The theatrical cut made her fate as we never know rather than seeing her get snatched off the street . I'm glad someone posted this since I had told people on the net about this ending years ago .

Whether or not you think Deirdre being killed is good for the story, it cannot be denied that including her abduction in this sequence really disrupts the pacing and tone of the film's final moments. What is a quiet sequence of deep contemplation becomes a cheap exercise in shallow dramatic irony. I'm glad it was cut.

It might not be that their complaint was that she betrayed her boss, but rather that by following him she betrayed the guys who grabbed her. It might also be that was the CIA cleaning up loose ends, that DeNiro had been the bait to lure her. There are a lot of angles they could have played with this movie, the benefits of a great story and top notch talent on both sides of the camera.

They were right not to use this ending. How would they know that she 'betrayed' her boss? Her boss shot three people and got killed in the arena. She could easily just say that he never made it back to the car, so she drove off. There's not a real logical reason as to why they would be so certain she betrayed him that they came to grab her and 'avenge' her boss especially after she single-handedly rescued him earlier in the movie.

I'm a bit torn. On one had, it definitely closes anything between Deidre and Sam. It also feels very plausible and likely. At the same time, I like the open ending better because it's left to the imagination. I didn't care about Deidre (or any of them) either way, so her dying wasn't an issue with me. Either way, I don't think she ended well. She either leaves with nothing and no choice but to move on to another life or dies. :/

It's a bit too depressing for me.
Dierdre was basically alright... just got messed up with a bad man.
I would have preferred it if they showed her walking to her car and no more.
She debated - but chose to not go to the cafe.
And now she was off on her own - to pickup the pieces of her life.

It's so eerie without any soundtrack! Maybe that's got me a little biased, but I prefer the final cut. We imagine Deirdre is 'dealt' with, or we can imagine she meets up with him again. I prefer the latter, but the open ending is better.

i have the dvd with this alternate ending. frankenheimer did it right in the final cut; this alternate ending is what you'd think would happen. but the whole movie is about people that know, and people that don't. that's why i'm glad he chose the ambiguous ending, you believe what you want to believe actually happened. and the case had IRA documents that would've gotten Seamus back into the fold as he had gone rogue and needed to do something to get back in. the russians, english and americans wanted the case to ensure that Seamus was killed by the ira and would not be in power or part of the group anymore.

Earlier in the movie Deidre asks Seamus why he didn't handle the operation himself and says it's because he's in hiding implying he only has Deidre; after all where were these IRA men during the entire hunt for the case? They could have carried out the job. So this alternative ending doesn't add up. Edit: could be because Deirdre helped Seamus. Either way prefer the actual ending.

This was my favorite movie in my teenage years. I thought this was a realistic spy movie (I just watched it Sam was a supersoldier a truly one man army so that kind of kills it for me) , I grew out of the genre. But I think the most realistic was the spy game.

I thought the troubles intrigue shouldered the movie towards stupidity.
Let's have a good action movie between characters, not fudged relevance.
Also, too many of the cat hardly brought their a game. Jonathan Pryce's accent was particularly atrocious, but Jean Reno was outcooled drastically by De Niro to the extent his character became virtually irrelevant.
Good car chases (which get repetitive) but a massive letdown of a movie.
