Keanu didn't have that brace on because of an injury. He had been in a motorcycle accident and had damaged the c3-5 discs in his neck and started to lose sensation in his hands and feet. He had to have a 6-inch plate out in his neck and started training 6 weeks after his surgery against his doctor's orders. That's why he doesn't do any kicks in the first movie. His neck is immobilized from C1-5.

Everybody was kung-fu fighting. But seriously, it's actually impressive to see the cast train proper martial arts to make the fights that much more authentic and skillful, even Hugo Weaving as Smith as a cold elegance to his otherwise brutal and direct fighting style.
