That's not hwat he meant by the Alekhine remark. Tal quite openly criticizes the Soviet regime for treating Spassky poorly by not inviting him to tournaments. Regarding the Alekhine remark....He basically says the only good "french" chessplayers of the last 250 years were Alekhine and Spassky (russian origin). As Soviet television was always 100% scripted those were not Tal's words or they had an audition beforehands.... and since these were the 80ies...the time of glasnost and perestroika....you can see the little changes...the message now is not: we are the USSR and perfect! the message here is....yes, we made mistakes but we are still better than the west :D quite funny actually

This was 1987, and the USSR was crumbling. Still interesting to see Tal criticize a government agency, I guess someone of his stature could do so with impunity.
In 1987, with the perestroïka, it was possible, before that even Tal would have self-censured. Note that many Russians hate the perestroïka that they associate with a major decline of their country. Mikhail Tahl is amazing. He gives me the impression that he is not simply one of the greatest, or perhaps the greatest genius in chess, but a human being of another level. His immense intelligence, his deep vision of events, his bravery, his integrity, go beyond the field of chess and transport him to the world of the immortals.
