      Amazing how lockdown has brought the crayons out again! Unfortunately they've stopped our free papers so we're 100% wood fired this winter. It's nice though for a family to gather around the fire when the UK weather's unfriendly and we have to stay in anyway.

      No worries, if its copier grade paper it will have a high clay content so don't wrap it too tightly or make the logs too thick since this will need to breathe better to burn well. Newspaper has very little beside wood pulp and cotton in it so it can stand being wrapped tightly.Mark.

    The only advantage I can see with the paper shredding method is that you man make custom shapes, or that the end result might be slightly more dense. Logs like this look like they'll do the job just fine.

      Hi Jamie, we burned them in a woodburning stove so we didn't notice any smoke. So long as your chimney is cleaned and drawing a decent draft you shouldn't have any problem, it doesn't need much wax to seal them I was accidentally a little generous. Mark.

    • @agunemnon
      @agunemnon Рік тому

      It's a fair consideration, black newsprint mostly uses plain carbon and a soybean oil base so not too worrying, coloured magazine style print can use petroleum bases and some fairly nasty metals for pigment. I'd only advise newspaper for this reason and even then, since we burn them in a wood burning stove, we don't breathe any of the smoke.

      I wouldn't fancy it as a direct heat source since wood or charcoal burning flavours the food I imagine paper would too and probably not as pleasantly. On a stove, with the exhaust gasses separated by a flue, I guess it would be fine.

    • @agunemnon
      @agunemnon 2 роки тому +1

      Very true sir but quality paper used for books has a higher clay content and I don't exclude as much air since the layers are less intimately pressed together than pages.

  • @bf2823
    @bf2823 5 років тому

    Some years back I made a newspaper log and included some of those supermarket plastic bags in it. It burned VERY well. As the paper burned, the plastic melted, acting very much like the wax Mark includes in his logs. The ash it produced was a little more like wood ash, and less like the fly-away ash newspaper produces (which necessitates a screen in front of the fireplace unless the flue has a good enough draft to keep it from flying into the room).
    I don't have a fireplace or wood-burning stove, so I can't test this fully myself and determine a good ratio of newspaper to plastic. I'd be interested if someone gives this a good test.

    • @agunemnon
      @agunemnon 5 років тому +7

      Don't burn plastic bags in a domestic setting, the dyes and plasticizers (added to make the film flexible and stretch without tearing) give off very dangerous fumes. The temperature of a paper/wood fire is not hot enough to fully burn the oil products so it will also produce carbon monoxide, deadly and not easily detected.
      I cant stress enough- DO NOT BURN PLASTIC BAGS at home.

    Biggest concern here is that once the wax burns, it'll unroll, thus losing the advantage of rolling it.

    • @agunemnon
      @agunemnon 3 роки тому +3

      Not too bad it turns out since the "log's" resting face is held by it's own weight.

    • @bawynner
      @bawynner 2 роки тому +1

      My dad used to roll our leftover newspapers from our paper routes and put wire around them to keep them from unrolling during the burn.

    • @Eidolon1andOnly
      @Eidolon1andOnly Рік тому +1

      As the wax melts it absorbs more into the paper and still keeps the logs more or less tightly wound up. You alsk wouldn't really use these as your sole source of fuel for your fire, but more of and addition to a would stack to help get the wood started. So the weight of the wood on top also helps them keep their shape

  • @claykirby3993
    @claykirby3993 5 років тому +1

    Toxic

    • @agunemnon
      @agunemnon 5 років тому +3

      All of the ingredients are non toxic, but admittedly intentionally breathing any smoke in is foolish at best. I'm burning them in a wood burning stove so any smoke produced is vented up the chimney in the usual way. I still use candles occasionally and they are less well ventilated but sometimes you choose "atmosphere" over health and safety.
