My husband passed away last year and I'm disabled I bought this for a small patch in my backyard in the other side of the garden area My John Deere won't go there do to the fence my husband built around it. He used a gas mower I can't start a gas mower. I purchased a electric mower not knowing it wasn't self propelled last year like to have killed me I was in so much shock I just got it done So this year I just bought this one it came today 5/24/23 and I'm thankful for this review I'm the person you spoke about Just got to know the grass Although I would love to know how to get a yard with weeds not weeds lol 😂 to grass like yours. My husband didn't take very good care of this lawn the last few years understandable Now I want a easy way to a green lawn Any videos on this? Your a kind neighbor to give the too her. I know she will appreciate it. Take Care Thanks Sheila
I got one from my dad, he got it for free and didn't have the 24v max batteries. I have kobalt tools, rigid, and Milwaukee. The battery life isn't the best but I use it for the smaller areas. Then I get on my 46 inch cut Husqvarna rider to mow the rest. It saves me gas when I gotta mow 2.8 acres of lawn.
72-year-old senior lady with a new heart condition here. I can no longer push my gas mower up and down my hillside "lawn" (weeds) or fool with my corded trimmer and blower in the southern heat. Neither can I afford to pay someone to mow. Just bought this mower and Kobalt combo electric blower and trimmer for a total of three 24-volt batteries and $700. Just finished mowing my smallish "lawn", not overgrown, with hills so I used the self-propel feature a lot with a number 3 height. Plus a 30' by 30' fenced food garden with three long raised beds that are difficult to maneuver around, very tight. The 20" width is better than my 22" gas mower. I fully charged the two batteries and then got a shocking hour and a half out of it! Takes 3 hours to charge. Love the 4-wheel up/down mechanism, so easy! This is the first mower I've ever had with a handle that's high enough for my 5'-10". It's lighter than my gas mower and all the weight is at the back on the wheels so tilting is easy. Best of all, it's quiet! No more ear protection. The self-propel lever is okay; you get used to it, but I found it would engage off my belly from time to time when I didn't want it to, mostly when pulling backward (I'm not overweight at all). The instructions aren't well-written and they mixed up red and green in a chart about the meaning of the lights. That's typical American business; they are more interested in legal CYA than informing their customers. I worry that it's not tough enough to handle the muscadine vines constantly creeping out of the woods all around my house. I did hit a small rock an armadillo loosened by digging, but I couldn't feel any nick in the blade so I guess it's okay. My biggest worry is service when there's a problem. There's nobody in this rural area who knows anything about these battery mowers. There's not much to go wrong, I guess, and no regular maintenance so I'll just hope for the best. No more noise or gasoline or oil or stinky exhaust or pulling that damned cord! I can stay in my house a few more years now.
I had the unfortunate issue with the string trimmer of losing the spring...the konalt people sent me to lowes, lowes sent me to kobalt. So far a run-around, but I got it to work(loosely, as I have to pull the string manually out while pressing the button). I got it because the deal came with 2 batteries...I have like 7 more ... and the blower/ trimmer, but they're kindve weak.
@@jacobz.carson803 Same here except for the trimmer not advancing the string. I have to stop, pull out the spool (nearly impossible for lack of enough hand strength), free the string and put it back for 5 minutes more trimming; repeat, repeat, repeat. I want to claim something on the warranty, but I haven't been able to muster the fight that would take after fighting with medical insurance and another product. I never feel like a "valued customer"; I have come to feel like a victim of everything I buy, product or service. The US has become a nation I no longer want to live in, but I have no money to go elsewhere.
I have a very small yard, so I got the corded version. The downside to the battery version is I've been told the battery only lasts about 3 years. The replacement batteries are almost as much as a new mower.
I have the issues you describe with every $400 AWD gas mower i have ever had. I just got this mower becausr the reviews for the other 3 brands you mention have batteries that cost $350+. I already have over 6 large kobalt batteries for the other tools i have, so this gives me two more batteries. The vertical storage is the biggest selling point for me. My POS husqvarna won't run and i am tired of paying my buddy $60 everytime this happens. I love troubleshooting but i am tired of troubleshooting gas mowers. I am excited for this new experience.
UPDATE: charged batteries overnight. Just cut my yard on steep inclines using self propelled at fastest setting. I cut for 46 minutes and I still have 2/4 bars on both batteries. I will use those batteries in my large kobalt blower to blow all the debris off my concrete and out of my mower. I am very satisfied. I didn't get the lawn mulch and we haven't mowed in 2 months. I did not use the bag or the side chute.
I simply filed my blade to a nice sharp edge, (very easy, maybe 10 minutes) then cut the grass with one large battery and one small battery. Cut extremely nice into small mulched pieces. This was walking at a moderate pace only using self propel to climb an incline. Very impressed with this mower. And I am very picky about my lawn .
Then you will probably feel disappointed with the lawns down here in Texas. I would think most of lawns haven't been renovated for years and neither dethatch and grass control.
I know its over 2years now bt i had an issue. I press the button nd turn it on nd repeated twice nd it worked bt after doing it the third time it seemed to not wanna turn on even tho a green light would flash. Is there like an emergency cut off or something or is it jst not supposed to do that? Any help with that thanks. Nd thanks for the honest review
Funny putting this next to my old Murray selfpropell gas mower this thing can only be called a toy. It may work but in a fight my Murry would have eaten & spit this thing out. Picked this now because am older with health issues and this offers no pull start and little to no maintenance. Bought the selfpropell version and gass is about 500 sqft area
I've been eying the 8.0Ah "Ultimate Power" batts to use instead of the included "Extended Run" batteries that come with it. Supposedly they give you less run time but more continuous power, especially for tools like this. I wonder if some of the issues you addressed would be resolved simply from just having that little extra kick.. Ya know? Really set this thing to "11"
I have this exact mower. When it's working it's great. But lately it has just been shutting off by itself, every few minutes. The battery is charged and I don't why it keeps stopping.

I have never had a lawnmower that cut great on a single pass! I have always had to at least double cut my grass. I don't use crap for lawnmowers eather.
I loved this mower. But the handle angle adjuster wore out and wouldnt lock into place anymore. And kobalt offers no replacement parts. So because i couldn't get a $20 part. My $300 mower is unuseable.
Thanks for the review. I bought this mower last year since I’m already in the 24v line up with both power tools and lawn tools. The Ego 20” high lift blade (model # AB2001) will fit and works better than the blade that comes with the mower. All the clippings go in the bag and no missed cuts. I had that issue just like you.
Just so everyone knows this is a 48 volt system. It uses 24v batteries connected in series. So the voltage will be 48v 5amp hours if you are using 24v 5ah batteries. If they were connected in parallel then it would be 24v 10ah total.
That's great you are passing it forward. Who knows if one of those girls grow up to be a lawn care enthusiast because of this. Thanks for the review my 8 year old is asking me for lawn mower so he can start his business. To be honest he is more interested in the money he could earn than actual lawn care but that is more than enough for me.
@@TheLawnWhisperer I'm trying to go with battery to protect his hearing, I lost a lot of mine during my 6 years in the Army. That and weight, something light. I'll be looking at the toro. Anyway congratulations on how fast your channel has grown. I believe I subscribed when you had under a thousand, you deserve it.
I wish every review online was this thorough and helpful. Just what I needed to help me understand what to look for in a mower - and I'm seriously considering this brand in my lists of finalists.
I love my battery powered mower.. It's a shortcut from my garage to the backyard through the house. I can't resist because it's so light but the look my wife gave me when she saw me carrying my mower through the kitchen was priceless.
Im thinking switching to kobalt, i have use ryobi for years for lawn care. But lately with suggestions from co-workers im thinking switching over to kobalt. How does kobalt compare to ryobi?
@@TheLawnWhisperer i keep that in mind. When i first got into electric lawn mowers i went with ryobi cause on sale and more affordable. Though the batteries sucked but luckly few tools in garage compatible with it, though still had get batter as mowing lawn took 2-3 batteries, rare occasion 4. I owned total three, latest one i do like is way better than previous two but still has some faults with it. Especially since batteries wear down bit. Few co-workers i shoudl go to lowes and try kobalt or ego. Course im going to wait not going right out to buy one, most likely have get extra battery but will give brand a shot. Ego looks tad expensive from what i seen.
Bought this one and it crapped out after 10 minutes. No matter what I did it wouldn't start back up. Self propelled system worked fine. I agree the cut was not the best. I returned it and purchased an Ego one.
awesome info think i will get this mower..watched video and its awesome that you gave this to a nieghbor that could use it. they are good people out there still
the 40v is on sale at Lowes because they are discontinuing carrying the brand for shitty craftsman. $180 for a $380 mower right now. just bought one and it kicked an overgrown lawns ass. battery lasted 40 minutes on my huge lawn but I take an hour break anyway every hour so it was fine.
Thanks for the review. I have a 40V Kobalt push mower with interchangeable batteries for a grass trimmer, leaf blower and pole chain saw. The 40V batteries are a little heavy for these other items. I think the 2x24 V is great to reduce the weight of these other items, and great if you need to replace your cordless drill and similar equipment. My mower does not pick up leaves and mulch quite as well as my old IC mower. The reason the mower leaves grass uncut is because it does not pick up and cut the grass pushed down by the wheels from the last pass. I improved that a lot by mowing in a counterclockwise path so the bent over grass is cut with the clockwise rotation of the blade.
I used a Kobalt 80V mower today. It wasn't even self-propelled. I echo your thoughts, and also add that it had crappy suction. Good mowers...they suck. This mower didn't even really suck, and that...well, sucks.
You should test the 80v Kobalt mower. It's a beast and would have no problem with any of that. I have cut some pretty thick brush with it and it just revs up and cuts through it without bogging. It also can start up while on uncut grass, so you don't have to tilt it up.
Just a heads up.. Definitely not a 24 volt mower.. Yes the batteries are 24v, but when you plug them in, its running @ 48v with 5Ah capacity.. That's why it wouldn't start with one battery.. No way a mower would work at 24 volts haha...........
@@TheLawnWhisperer oh, cool man. I think I will get the 40v you did a video on. Thanks for the reviews. I like common people reviews better than some upity snob's
I have that same exact mower and like you said I only cut my grass like once or twice a week and does a great job 👍🏼, very nice video well done and thank you 😊
Good review! I bought one that was on “clearance “ and upon trying it I had second thought on whether it was going to be adequate. Maybe I’ll give it a second shot!
So i'm looking at purchasing one of these and was a little disappointed you judged it solely on mulching capability. Maybe i've never owned a quality mower, but I never cut my grass and had it NOT leave clippings even with an advertised 'mulching blade'. I then switched to bagging mowers, hence my disappointment in the video. The bag was only shown at the end. Why didn't you test it with the bag? Also, 24v is misleading on Kobalts behalf. It required both batteries because it's likely a series battery arrangement. That would make it a 48v tool. I don't know that for fact, but that's my best educated guess on what's going on here and why you only get the starting umph of a 24v system because the current isn't being doubled by both batteries, the voltage is. I think it would heavily confuse the customer to advertise it as a 48v system when they don't have a 48v line so I think they did the right thing there. But I believe this to be a 48v tool. Take care!
I have an Ego with the older thumb control. I actually like it (but it is only on one side, the kobalt you could go from either it looks like), because I can just use it to get moving, then let go and keep pushing myself to save some battery life.
Lowes stocks Kobalt 24v batteries in 2, 4, 6, and 8 amp hour ratings. Any of them will work in this mower, but of course the higher amp hours will give longer run times, and since the batteries work in series to produce 48v, which is required for the mower to run, it's better to use two batteries of the same amp hour ratings. It's possible to use two batteries of different amp ratings, but the mower will stop running when the lower rated battery is depleted, even if the higher rated battery still has a charge.
Always enjoy your video's. Just an fyi on Kobalt electric mowers. I agree, a 24 volt wouldn't be my pick either, but for the past three years I've used the Kobalt 80v and love it! No grass clipping like you experienced. Has all the power you could want AND has a larger deck. Also like to say very nice gesture giving the Kobalt to your neighbor. 👍
Nice, honest review! Is the price of this mower commensurate with its performance in relation to the higher end Toro and Ego mowers? For example, you could expect the Toro to be more money for its higher performance, is this one significantly cheaper?
ANyone have thoughts on the new SKIL battery powered mower?? SKIL is now owned by the same company who owns EGO. I think that company is ... Chervon or Chevron?
@@TheLawnWhisperer So they're essentially all the same product, at least the lower end ones? I know EGO is the priciest out of all of them. But I don't believe it's worth the price tag. I've purchased the hedge trimmer and blower from EGO. I returned the trimmer for the Dewalt 20v trimmer. That trimmer is very. Unlike with EGO, you can use it with one hand - if need be. You need two hands with the EGO. I know it's not safe. But sometimes you need to reach farther with one hand and Dewalt allows this. Anywho, I've been intrigued by all the new SKIL battery tools. I've just never been a Kobalt (Lowes exclusive brand) guy ... Hey Lawn Whisper, would you rather have the Toro 60v tools and mower or the new SKIL products? I just bought the new Toro 60v Snowblower and I was going to buy into the Toro 60v products. But now I'm intrigued by SKIL's new line. The mph rate of their blower (120mph, I believe) is greater than EGO's lower end blower and all similar blowers in that price range. I was thinking about grabbing that blower and trimmer instead of Toro's ....
@@seenok7960 in my opinion the ego tools are 100% worth the price tag. I would take the ego weed eater over any of them. The blower and the mower though I think toro is right up there. I have no experience with the skil line so I can’t speak on it but if I had to answer right now I’m taking toro or ego all day
@@TheLawnWhisperer Yeah, I know you're a Toro guy (from your videos). I like the snowblower. I planned on buying the mower. But my Honda Troybilt mower is doing fine. I purchased the Ego trimmer with the carbon fiber shaft about 2 years ago. I used it once and returned it. Ergonomically, it didn't feel right. It was heavy and imbalanced. I'm no way a fan of a bump stock. That's why I'm holding back from our purchasing the Toro trimmer. I hear it's good. But I don't think I'll like it because of the bump stock. I've been using a good old reliable Black & Decker 36v adjustable head trimmer for the past 12 years. I love it. The line feeds itself when it detects it needs it. I don't have to slam it on the ground. Anyway, I wanted to like Ego. I was ready to invest in all their products. But they kind of let me down. I do still own and use their less powerful blower. But that came with a 2.5amp battery that dies after about 5-10 minutes of "turbo" use. They should include at least a 5amp battery in their kits. Gotta love marketing ... trying to get you to upgrade.
@@seenok7960 this just shows why there are so many different options! You like what you like and I respect that. I love my ego carbon fiber shaft and I love bump feed heads on trimmers. I’m not a big fan of the toro weed eater buti like everything else in the line up 👍
Great review but let’s not forget about the 80v kobalt volt ur talking twice the power 21” cut deck a lot nice than the this one I would definitely look at one I own the 80v it’s a beast crushing those other ones he’s talking and I know my sister husband has the toro and like mine better ryobi it’s not even a comparison people good review tho just forgot to mention the next step up 🆙 in kobalt line and trust me I have an acre it’s a huge step up
I like that even though you're a self proclaimed lawn snob, you factor in those who aren't. The tall grass is always a good test, although wet tall grass is another test I'm interested in.
I have that mower as well and I love it. My only complaint is that the blade is the same cheap ones that come with ego mowers. Next to impossible to find a replacement better blade.
Yup... Saw ol’ Knorr making flowerbeds today. Cutting in edges. Real sus. How bizarre. Nice mower though. I’m going down the electric route with Milwaukee trimmer system, staying with gas for mowing.

Nice review. I'm looking into an affordable in expensive battery mower for my front yard. Very small. I think this is perfect
How to open the mover when it's fold for storage.?
It a 48 volt mower that uses 2 24 volt batteries
I have a concern why my 24v kobalt mower keeps dying when I start up and it's in motion?
Head to head demolition derby with the tonka truck
This was a great review - thank you for putting this together.
I’ve never heard a person be such a grass cutting critic holy shit man it’s fuckign grass bro
That’s awesome! Whatever gets him out of the house! I started my business with a toro super recycler 👍
@@TheLawnWhisperer
Do you know if you can fit the larger 6 or 8 ah batteries in there and use them?
Thanks
Great information thank you.
I bought one today and holy shit was I impressed
A class act! We need more kindness, thanks!
I wish every review online was this thorough and helpful. Just what I needed to help me understand what to look for in a mower - and I'm seriously considering this brand in my lists of finalists.
Super cool of you to give the mower to a neighbor that could use it. Very thoughtful.
Won't you be my neighbor!
Can you please tell me that it start only when we pull it longer to hand
Because today i bought it and this start only when i pull full to my hand
I love my battery powered mower..
It's a shortcut from my garage to the backyard through the house.
I can't resist because it's so light but the look my wife gave me when she saw me carrying my mower through the kitchen was priceless.
“This is the longest one that I’ve handled.” 😂
Giggidy
"That's what she said!"
The pause after he said it. 😅
It lasted that long cuz you had nothing to cut.😮
I cut my lawn every 3 days 🤷🏻♂️
Im thinking switching to kobalt, i have use ryobi for years for lawn care. But lately with suggestions from co-workers im thinking switching over to kobalt. How does kobalt compare to ryobi?
If I were switching from Ryobi it would be to ego. Same company that makes kobalt makes ego, and ego is the more premium option
I have the 80 volt model and it works great
How to install bag
So you didn't put the bag on to collect the clippings? That's why you had the grass all over the backyard
Literally any mower can bag up clippings. It was a test to see how it mulched taller grass. Some do better than others..
The clumps of grass come from the mulching plug, grass collects on the plug.
Bought this one and it crapped out after 10 minutes. No matter what I did it wouldn't start back up. Self propelled system worked fine. I agree the cut was not the best. I returned it and purchased an Ego one.
awesome info think i will get this mower..watched video and its awesome that you gave this to a nieghbor that could use it. they are good people out there still
Anyone know if you can fit 6 ah 24v batteries in it?
Outstanding video
WOW.Can really tell how it mows, mowing that fast.Really.I got one and it is a joy to mow with.Leaves no unmowed grass.Worth the money.
can you use 4hour batteries?
the 40v is on sale at Lowes because they are discontinuing carrying the brand for shitty craftsman. $180 for a $380 mower right now. just bought one and it kicked an overgrown lawns ass. battery lasted 40 minutes on my huge lawn but I take an hour break anyway every hour so it was fine.
You mentioned the clumps of grass laying around after you cut it. Why didn't you use the grass catcher attachment that came with it?
Because that would have defeated the purpose of testing how well it mulches taller grass 🤷🏻♂️
"Grass Snob" Love the Honesty. Cheers dude
(... I mow high!... 🙃)
=^..^=
Yeah show us the Kobalt Vs EG0 battle! 🤘😝
This mower rocks
Just a heads up.. Definitely not a 24 volt mower.. Yes the batteries are 24v, but when you plug them in, its running @ 48v with 5Ah capacity.. That's why it wouldn't start with one battery.. No way a mower would work at 24 volts haha...........
I just bought the Kobalt 40 volt and I'm looking at his thinking what the hell!? LOL
3 years later I see this comment haha I mentioned in the video it’s 2x 24 volt because it takes 2 batteries
Longest you handle 🤣 lol you are funny and humbled to include that. Have a great day and lawn is beautiful ⛳️
Stragglers and clumps indicate you were going to fast to let the little mower do it's job.
I was walking at a normal pace 🤷🏻♂️
@@TheLawnWhisperer oh, cool man. I think I will get the 40v you did a video on. Thanks for the reviews. I like common people reviews better than some upity snob's
@@averagejoe3312 it’s not a bad mower 👍
your review videos are always great... very detailed...
Bro. When you started pushing it without the handle bar extended, I lost it! You looked like Shaq trying to mow his lawn with a normal sized mower 😂😂
Take care!
This was a good honest review. That is nice you will pass it to the neighbor. 👍
Love thy neighbour !!! That was really nice of you. She was probably very happy
I have an Ego with the older thumb control. I actually like it (but it is only on one side, the kobalt you could go from either it looks like), because I can just use it to get moving, then let go and keep pushing myself to save some battery life.
Is it Flemsy like this one?
@@TheLawnWhisperer no, but it’s a lot smaller too, so there’s less to flimse. Is flimse a word? Verb form of flimsy?
Solid bro move giving it to your neighbor. I love neighborhoods where people look out for each other. 👍🏻
I suspected that this mower wasn't going to be a top of the line type mower.. Appreciate the honesty Justin. 👍🏻🇺🇸💚
Throw the bag on there and there will he less grass globs
Obviously but the goal was to test how well it mulches
Just a heads up do the research lowes does not stock this battery in store or online.
It's possible to use two batteries of different amp ratings, but the mower will stop running when the lower rated battery is depleted, even if the higher rated battery still has a charge.
you dont have a bag on
Ok…
We love an unbiased review
Always enjoy your video's. Just an fyi on Kobalt electric mowers. I agree, a 24 volt wouldn't be my pick either, but for the past three years I've used the Kobalt 80v and love it! No grass clipping like you experienced. Has all the power you could want AND has a larger deck. Also like to say very nice gesture giving the Kobalt to your neighbor. 👍
Great video man good review
Nice, honest review! Is the price of this mower commensurate with its performance in relation to the higher end Toro and Ego mowers? For example, you could expect the Toro to be more money for its higher performance, is this one significantly cheaper?
No, the crazy thing is they’re about the same price. The toro 60v recycler may be about $50 more
The real benefit is staying on the same line of batteries if you’ve got other kobalt things, not the price
@@pot-shot-scott I get it. But this mower is not the same quality as the toro, which is about the same price and comes with a battery
Depends on how short you are cutting your grass I have a black and decker and use 2 mega batteries to complete front and back...
Good on you for taking care of your neighbor!🙏🏻
good fair review. looking forward to your review of that ryobi.... hope it's the brushless
ANyone have thoughts on the new SKIL battery powered mower?? SKIL is now owned by the same company who owns EGO. I think that company is ... Chervon or Chevron?
Kobalt is owned by that same company
I’m not a big fan of the toro weed eater buti like everything else in the line up 👍
Great review but let’s not forget about the 80v kobalt volt ur talking twice the power 21” cut deck a lot nice than the this one I would definitely look at one I own the 80v it’s a beast crushing those other ones he’s talking and I know my sister husband has the toro and like mine better ryobi it’s not even a comparison people good review tho just forgot to mention the next step up 🆙 in kobalt line and trust me I have an acre it’s a huge step up
I’m just not into the kobalt mowers, I’m sorry.
Seems the only good thing about the mower was the long lasting battery! Very cool you paid it forward.👊😎🌴
Good review, Is that made in the USA ?
No, China - of course.
Do you know if you can fit 6 or 8 ah 24v batteries in there/ use them?
My ego mower though is pretty damn good. Even on tall grass :) absolutely love it and wouldn't trade for any other!
Its a grower not a shower.
Fun video. I was so excited to see the little blue pill cutting it up. I can’t believe you are giving you neighbor the long handle. Good for you.
Yup... Saw ol’ Knorr making flowerbeds today. Cutting in edges. Real sus. How bizarre. Nice mower though. I’m going down the electric route with Milwaukee trimmer system, staying with gas for mowing.
I want to see the Kobalt 40v. Debating on a purchase of that one.
Good man giving that to your neighbor. Great video as usual bud.
