    Deer Mouse Gets Trapped. Review and test of the Atomic Barbie Rat Trap, Medium Animal Humane Live Cage. There are two versions I found on Amazon, small and medium. Not everything fits into the small, so I went to the medium and glad I did. Watch the video and let me know if you have any questions, I used a wild deer mouse to test the trap. For bait, I used Tomcat Mouse Attractant and Yogies from ecotrition (yogies are marketed to pet enthusiasts for rats). I have found that wild rats will ignore yogies, but wild mice definitely go for them. I paid $23.12 for this medium trap on Amazon, seller was Atomic Barbie. Atomic Barbie sent two e-mails following the sale, reminding me to leave a "five star review" on Amazon, I made this video instead. I prefer video over written reviews thanks.

    the slow motion vid is amazing.. the fact that the mouse went sideways sensing the only exit before touching the trigger just blew my mind!!!.... thanks for sharing !!

    Now I understand and appreciate why these traps are so long. During the slow motion, it's amazing how the mouse knew exactly where to turn under those kind of reflexes.

      +Michael Vuong You know it Michael.. if this trap were just two inches shorter, this mouse would have propelled itself through the door before it finished closing. I'm putting up a second, much shorter video just to display that in greater detail. The mouse, as soon as it senses a trigger, rockets towards the entry point... I was amazed by that ability.

    File the end of the metal wire that goes through the loop to an angle and smooth. It still stays in the loop easily but slips off quickly when something touches the trigger.

    Thank you for such a GREAT video review! I agree the construction looks shoddy and weak, but I love that you show how well it works in spite of the craftsmanship. I have ordered two of them (they will arrive tonight). Wish me luck. Seeing how fast that mouse was, and yet, he wasn't fast enough to escape, made my day. I hope it works on a rat I saw scurry across my patio yesterday. Thanks again for such a complete review.

      So glad you like it... rats are soooo smart that I really get a kick out of figuring out how to catch them. I know you will have fun with these traps, my only problem is that I've run out of rodents to catch... I guess that's the point in the first place.

    • @eugenecanzano1531
      @eugenecanzano1531 8 років тому +3

      Rodents gone; great problem to have! I am looking forward to having your problem and becoming rat free. I am worried that the rat, if not caught, may figure out how to use our doggy door--that could be a much bigger problem. I hope I can nip this in the bud. There is construction in the area and I had to catch three gophers. The rats are the newest invaders. Great job! I hope you keep your "problem!"

    I've owned one of these traps for over a year now. I tell you what it was the best 5$ spent. I've managed to catch all the mice at home and even took it to work where i caught many more. I'm sure I am well over 100 catches by now. I use peanut butter every time I set it and it never fails. If you own one of these traps and the trap doesn't go off then you might be setting it wrong. You have to make sure that the rod that goes through the loop on top isnt inside the loop to far. Make sure the rod is barely inside the loop right on the edge. This will make the pressure pad alot more sensitive to touch.

    • @ezhfan
      @ezhfan 4 роки тому

      I have 4 traps, peanut doesn't work, but beead with sunflower oil attracts all the rods!
      The trap itself is almost perfect, but I'm using slight modification to catch cautious rats - I put a metal bar on the trigger so the only way to sniff the bait is to step up on the trigger. Some rats don't even touch the trigger but got caught! And yes - this trap holds rat without problems!

    I received 4 of these traps form Amazon recently. 2 large and 2 small.
    I was surprised to find the quality of the traps has apparently improved
    since you reviewed them here 4 years ago.
    I am actually using these traps to dispose of starlings that have been
    wreaking havoc at my platform bird feeders. Starlings, unlike other birds,
    will eat cat food so I place these small traps inside a much larger enclosed
    platform feeder. I place the food they don't want at the front of the trap,
    and then I place the cat food inside a tiny container on top of the spring
    mechanism. I also cut some thin plexiglass just small enough to fit inside
    the trap and cover the bottom of the trap, to prevent the bird food from
    falling out the bottom. I screwed a couple of small cups to the plexiglass
    so that the cardinals wouldn't spill the safflower seeds I put out for them.
    That goes in the front of the trap.

  • @ccdogpark
    @ccdogpark 4 роки тому +5

    You did a great job with this video ! Love how you gave us all the dimensions.
    Excellent critique and analysis with almost no wasted time in this video.
    My birdfeeders are being over run with a horrible invasive species known as starlings and
    I would like to get 3 or 4 of these traps. But I don't want to chance killing songbirds.
    I needed the dimensions because my platform feeders have 4 sides to them.
    I was wondering how high that round bar is in the air and I think 10" is going to be OK.
    I never had a problem with starlings until this year and I can't figure out what has changed.
    I wonder if I should get the smaller trap and if that trap would be a little more sensitive (?)
    I also wonder if this trap is made in China and still available here in the US since
    the US is boycotting them (?)

    My trap was not catching the chipmunks I wanted to get rid of. They would go in and trip the trap but push their way out! After watching this video I realized the slide lock had an interference fit with the cheap metal door. It did not drop down and secure the door. I removed the interference fit and the trap works great now.

    excellent video. I am seeing now I regret getting a trap like this, that mouse almost made it out before the door closed. I think I would prefer getting a cage that is longer and sturdier. I did buy a variety of traps for mice/rats with mixed results (including a snap trap that has a plastic tunnel system, but the mice or rats never went for it). I didn't want to get a live trap because I have no where to legally release the mice/rats, with cameras everywhere now I am sure I am going to have trouble finding a spot to release them. But the other traps aren't working so I figured I would try the cage instead.

    Grey squirrels can really tear these traps up if you leave a trapped
    squirrel in them for too long a period. I had to repair the door of my trap

      I haven't heard from you in awhile and I hope you are OK.
      I recently discovered a way to prevent grey squirrels from
      entering these traps when I use them with peanut butter outside.
      I cut up a 3 foot section of plastic white gutter guard from Home
      Depot and made it the same size as the opening, so it fits tightly.
      Then I attach the plastic piece of gutter guard to the top of the
      trap in the front with a couple of electrical ties which act as a
      fulcrum for the gutter guard to swing open.
      I cut a small hole at the bottom & middle of the gutter guard
      so that mice can enter but grey squirrels can not.
      The trap continues to work the exact same way.
      I just greatly reduced the size of the opening, to prevent grey squirrels
      from entering.

    Would the extra large work on mice and rats

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  5 років тому +2

      Yes! Larger is better in my opinion, what matters is that the trigger is sensitive enough for mice. For rats, I suggest locking the trap open and letting the rat get used to the trap being there and eating from the plate with no triggering, once it's confident, set it to spring and you'll have your rat. I also highly recommend using a trail camera to observe what is actually visiting the trap and you'll know how many you're dealing with and how large they are. All a rat has to do is see another rat get trapped and it's been educated to avoid. ==

      @@Jus4ya The more I learn about and observe the Norway rats we have, the more I ramp up my methods. None this year, but in the past I had one particular large male that I spent 12 weeks going after. He foiled one trap after another and often brought young rats that instantly went into the cage as he ran off. Creepy doesn't begin to describe that.

    Theres this small rat which drove me crazy.
    Took us 3 weeks to catch.
    Our trap is ineffective (big bars) and it got off a glue trap.
    Combined the two while wrapping the cage's bars with plastic wrap and so much tie rods
    It got caught
    Almost escaped when we drowned it
    Died while its head was stuck outside the cage door that was littered with sharp tie rods
    Small but far more clever than a bigger rat. It's the size of your deer mouse
    Never had a lasting rat pursuit longer than this
    Smaller mice are harder to catch tbh

    Good video Fred. Deer mice are native to North America, rats are not. I recently bought a similar couple of live-traps, one for otters, raccoons and that size animal, and a smaller one like yours for rats and mink. I would never release a live rat as that would be like releasing a diseased thing into our midst or into the forest where it would prey on our native birds and small mammal species.

    Well well done Frederick!
    And I am talking about you are not taking me as hostage for listening to your favorite music. Became a f* plague and terrifies due to youtube's autoplaying them.
    Weird on videos when killing animals anyways.
    You are right, this cage is overpriced.
    In my opinion rather a toy to catch ONE tiny mouse you did or a hamster for fun.
    Bigger rats will have bigger parts of their bodies outside anyway.
    The bucket trap does not work on rats a lot of "wannbee DJ's" promising here though.
    So I am thinking of a trap which catches more than one. Similar to those fishermen using
    to catch lobster and crabs. One where the one-way entry will open wide smooth on the way in and obstructs the way back entirely. Kinda springy hose made of loose nails with sharp endindings on finish. Not to be felt on the way in.
    I gonna destroy them all eventually because they killed my ducklings leaving them back concaved. My kids found them. That was it for me with mercy, vegetarian though.
    Shot a few rats after, we all felt having revenged the victims.

    What if that was a slow mouse? Like anything else, mice vary in speed and reaction time, and that mouse came within a hairbreadth of getting out. Couple that with the fact that you took some care to make sure the trigger mechanism was on its absolute quickest setting, and it looks like in the real world, with less careful owners, a fair amount of mice will escape.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  7 років тому +2

      You are correct, if it had been on the normal setting, it probably wouldn't have triggered at all. It's very common to find traps without bait and no mouse when tripped. The gravity closing systems (without springs) have that frequent problem. Mice are often extremely agile, rats are almost impossible.
