one thing I learned from my racing days is being able to read the riders in front of you. So the second you see all the butts in front of you get out of their saddles, you should do the same thing as them even if there is a dude 4 inches from your front wheel. Always try not to let a gap be created between you and the riders in front of you and you should be ok. You'll be alright. The only way to get stronger is to ride with stronger riders. Keep hammerin homie !!
Nice. I am old. I raced on the MCC "b" team, waaaaay back in 1975-1978. Since I was a team racer, I also rode it religiously. Since I knew most of the riders, I took glee in messing with them. I would attack on level streets. Then let myself get caught. As soon as I got caught, and other attack. Or, mess with their gear up a hill, by reaching over, and jamming the shifter down, making the derailleur go into the smallest cog. So much fun!
I'm supposed to be working from home, but when I clicked on this video, the addiction was immediate! Thanks for posting this as it was amazing. I appreciate your commentary, and your insights about the climbs, I think I've located the route on RWGPS and will definitely try it out, although at a bit less spicy pace!
So, I am old. 69. I joined the Motrose Cycle Club in 1976. I was living in Sierra Madre. I wanted to try Competitive Cycling. So, I joined up with MCC to get some guidance. I loved the Saturday morning training ride. So much fun! At that time, the ride started at Descanso Gardens. It went over to the Rose Bowl. Then down Arroyo Seco to South Pas to Mission Over Mission through San Marino to Huntington Drive. Go past Arcadia High to Santa Anuta. Down to Longdon. Left on Longdon to Arrow. It's been like 24 years, so I can't remember where the short and long rides split. Maybe Grand? Anyway, we ended up in Bradbury, then up to foothll. Up Santa Anita to Sierra Madre bl. Then back to the Rose Bowl. It ended up with a sprint at the finish line for the Rose Bowl training race. A lot of the ride seen here, looks different to me. What is the route used now? I had so much FUN racing bikes! I was there when John Adams, on MCC team, crashed badly by Santa Fe dam. He ended up suing MCC!
So if you were around for the John Adams crash, the route at that time was different that what you mentioned. Mission to Fair Oaks (not through San Marino at that point) south to Huntington Dr. End of ride didn't take Santa Anita up to Sierra Madre, but Highland Oaks (before Santa Anita) north and then zig zags to Sierra Madre. Split was after turning north on Cerritos, long ride goes right on Gladstone, short goes up to Foothill (now historic Route 66).
Excellent video and commentary. Familiar with all those roads at my snails pace! Please provide link for contributing to your updated camera…..I think GoPro 12 is out.
Sustained Z3/Z4 efforts up to 3600 ft on %5 sounds a lot like GMR. I was doing Z4 all the way up in Spring. It's just too hot right now so I gotta go to Malibu for those.
My buddy says when you get to Winston climb and still have something left in the legs. Catch you breath and sprint! As hard as you can! And survive the rest of the ride.
Winston typically becomes the start of the end for me. Going into LTHR a lot more and falling behind the front before I get to the Sierra Madre climb. But this is my doing either the 7:30/7:45 or the coffee right on Sunday.
I enjoyed your commentary about your awareness to do everything to conserve energy and not get dropped, your awareness of the Williams brothers and Bahaiti's attacks and the route familiarity. I began bike racing in 1977 in New York City with the CRCA (Century Roas Club Association). I also raced in USCF races as a cat.4. I am 65. I still ride the same roads that I trained. I stopped racing in 1980 I believe and returned to racing when I was 43 and stopped at 46 after severely injuring my spine. In the New York City area, there are small group rides among friends on various routes that take one from Manhattan over the George Washington Bridge, (NY GF) route. There is an organized group ride like yours in Westchester which I used to do in my 30's. In our area, the roads are narrower and climbs very steep as much in some areas of 11%. Your hills are not as steep but long that enable your momentum to assist to the top. I would love to ride with your group, but at my age, I could not sustain the power over the entire ride. If you desire to ride in my area, I would welcome to take on climbs that are like in Europe, they are relentless. if you are interested to have a conversation, we can exchange number. Oh, I am AF and my brother and I got Nelson Vails into cycling. If you speak to Nelson, ask him does he know the York brothers and watch his expression.
I remember the york bros. Also, the Gimbels ride is prob my all time fav group ride race. If I still lived back east, I would be filming that ride. I love how segments of the Gimbels ride are named after routes of Milan San Remo.
My brother and I are the York brothers. I just don't use my name on social media. So, you are from the East coast. Yes, you must know Greg Mckenzie? Or Carence Ballard. @@M3Atelier-Initiative
I got dropped by 745 Montrose a few months ago and got shat all over by 8. Haven’t even attempted a long. Gonna keep building because I wanna hang on this train 💪💪💪
If you added overlays.. It got taken off But nevertheless I love the videos & the work youre putting i bro.. Youre an inspiration to people like us... Thank You!

Love the hand gesture from Justin to the vehicle because that car definitely had the right of way. LOL

At 18:52 how many picnic lunches does the guy in the Durango shorts have stuffed into his pockets?
I miss this ride so much! Used to do it in the mid 2000s
I gave up at the same spot that day. 7:30L. I had climbed 6500 ft on Thursday/Friday. Huge difference. Great video & commentary.

Brings back memories. I feel the pain just watching. I used to do the long ride religiously when Rahsaan was just a teenager on the ride.
Nice.

Used to always be top 5 over the kitchen-gladstone when I was racing XC MTB. Looks like it might be faster now though!
