Civil War Diary of Captain Francis Asbury Vaughan

During the Civil War, Texans’ opinions about their state seceding from the Union and joining the Confederacy led to deep divisions. This was especially true when Collin County voted against secession.
So when Texas seceded to join the Confederacy, Francis Asbury Vaughan from Seguin, Texas, and eleven of his compatriots, elected as a matter of conscience to fight on the side of the Union.
Vaughan maintained a detailed diary that documented his perilous journey across Texas, into and through Mexico, by boat to New Orleans, then traveling to Fort Jackson to enlist in the Union Army, and his pursuits during the war. Departing on July 4, 1862, and finally locating the Union Army on October 22, 1862, Vaughan spent the Civil War fighting in Company A, Texas 1st Cavalry Regiment. He was mustered out of the army as a captain in San Antonio on November 4, 1865.
