control > speed. i hate what pitching has become. it's all about throwing hard and nothing more. it's led to one of my least favorite modern baseball things. a starting pitcher will go like 5 innings, then in the final 4 there will be 6 different pitchers. a guy throwing a complete game today feels more rare than a guy hitting for the cycle. last year 2 guys threw at least 3 complete games (3 was the max that year). in 2014 12 did. in 2004 13 did. in 1994 34 did!

The game is morphing into some kind of team version of golf. Analytics says stolen bases are dumb, ground ball base hits are dumb, and bunting is incredibly dumb. According to the guru's batters should focus only on getting walks or hitting homers.

The only thing that matters is how hard you can throw and how well you can spin a breaking pitch. Hitters are focused on the three true outcomes, home runs, walks and strikeouts.

It's a combination of two things. A youth coaching culture where parents demand results, velo is all anyone gives a shit about anymore and it's easier to teach a kid to use a violent 3/4 arm snap to generate velo than to teach him full body mechanics like Nolan Ryan. Second, going back to youth culture. These kids are 75% used up before they get to the highest levels of the sport. Especially in warm states, these kids are playing on two teams at a time for 12 months out of the year. And if they are a dominant pitcher, their arm will be abused for years. They will throw a whole career's worth of pitches, get to the bigs, and have 5 years left, tops before their first TJ surgery.

Baseball sucks now. Watch old games, they are all better.
