My Ruger Mk IV sucked! Sights only useful in VERY bright light. Replaced with Williams fire sights! About $78 shipped. Trigger sucked to hell! Creep like crazy and inconsistent! Replaced with Volquartsen trigger kit. About $113 shipped! And $80 gunsmith fees for installation of above! So figure $271 to make the gun shoot like it SHOULD have from the factory! Ruger, you suck! Knowing what I do now, I would have just bought a S&W model 41 and had a great gun! Ruger, you suck!

The Ruger seems a cut above in engineering design. The ease of its disassembly is truly state-of-the-art, a beautiful thing to see. Why it took them a half century and how the new version was achieved would make an interesting story.

The most obvious difference between the Mark series of .22 pistols and other semi-auto handguns is that the barrel is permanently affixed to the receiver. So, instead of a slide that moves and a barrel that tilts, only the blow-back operated bolt moves, much like a semi-auto rifle or carbine.

I have both the Victory and Mark IV pistols that have be tricked out with TK and Volquartsen parts. The Ruger has the TK and the Victory the Volquartsen. I really enjoyed the builds and really pleased with the outcome. Of the two the Victory is the better shooter. I think the difference in the two is based on the parts. Both weapons were fine shooters before mods. I had better results with the basic Smith due to the better sight picture with the fiber sights. One of the mods to the Mark IV was Fire Sights for the front and rear. I would be hard pressed to choose one over the other. I'm in my seventies so I don't compete with anyone else, I just cut holes in paper as close to each other as I can. My wife suggests that I get a hole punch but I haven't been convinced. When I compare these to the Volquartsen Scorpion or the Model 41 they are all more accurate than I am. Thanks for your demos of the amazing shots that could only dream of.

I have the Ruger 22/45 Mark IV and it’s fantastic. I’ve had Buck marks, and the Ruger Mark lll, and I can’t say there’s much of a big difference in those either, but the Buck mark needed a tool to take it apart and for that I rate it lower than the Mark lV but higher than the Mark lll, because the Mark lll is a pain to take apart. I’ve never owned a Victory but if it takes a tool to take it apart I would say that alone is going to score it lower than the Mark lV because as you say the thing with a semi auto rim fire is keeping it clean. The easier it is to clean it, the more I’m gonna like it. That’s my opinion and it’s free. 😉

No soy muy fan de las pistolas olímpicas y me gusta más la estética de ésta. Me preocupa un poco el agarre de las cachas, y no sé si las miras de fibra óptica te permiten competir. just took my new victory out for the first time this past weekend. I made the mistake of purchasing 200 rounds of the same type of ammo. they were 40 grain CCI's. every single round failed to cycle the next. I had to manually rack the slide to cycle the next round. after 120 rounds I bought a different type of ammo from the range. I can't remember the brand, but they were 36 grains. this new ammo worked flawlessly. had a lot of fun after that. lesson learned....next time I will buy several different types of ammo to see which ones run better

I have a Ruger Mk 3 22/45 and a S&W Victory. I added a aftermarket take down screw which simplified basic tear down for cleaning, so its not as bad as stock. Both guns are very accurate, both are very reliable, since I got the Victory I have shot the Ruger very little. I'm a former Bullseye competitive shooter, I still have my original High Standard target model with the 1911 grip angle as that points better for ME, every person is different on the point ability, so the grip angle is highly personal, but there is a reason why the grip angle of the 1911 is so popular and it is repeated on the Victory, and the 22/45 Ruger I have. However the angle might be better on the 1911, Ruger should have spent more time making the 22/45 grip closer in dimension to the 1911, the Ruger grip, the model with the molded in grip panels is way off, too small compared to the 1911. The Victory grip isn't as big as a 1911 but it fits my hand much better and is more comfortable to shoot, and the soft grip material allows an excellent grip. I have also installed the Tandemkross trigger on the Victory and it is really nice. Everyone has their own opinion, but IMHO the Victory is far superior to the Ruger.

I grew up with the first Ruger Mark. I couldn't hit much with it because when I was a kid pistol shooting style was one handed and it was heavy hanging way out there on the end of my skinny arm. I sold it to a friend in the 60's for $25.00 and bought a Dremel. What an idiot! Anyhow you and Hickok sold me on the Hunter last fall and I've been going through my second childhood with much better results. Interesting comparison. I currently have the Ruger Hunter SS model, and have owned many others. But my fall back model is the S&W model 41, hands down. I carried one on the trap line for decades, and it never let me down. The only caveat to, the m41, is that was designed as a target pistol. That means that it was designed to shoot 40 grain bullets, and will do that superbly. If you shoot lighter bullets, you can expect to experience various feeding/extraction problems. Not a lot, but it will happen.

I really enjoy my SW22 Victory. I did have ejection issues when new and had to send it back to S&W to fix, but it's been 100% reliable since. And mine came with black sights front/back which was fine, but I ended up getting a red/green dot for the top rail which amped up my enjoyment factor big time. Lastly, the grip is definitely not my favorite part of the pistol. I do have a TANDEMKROSS Hive grip on order that I hope will make it better. All in all, a great plinker! Next on my 22lr list is a Ruger SR22.

I like Rugers, but I have the sneaking suspicion that without the Victory, there never would've been a Ruger Mark IV. They've known for years that the difficult takedown was the one thing most owners of the Mark III complained about, yet for years, Ruger did nothing. It was only the fact that the Victory took a huge chunk of their market share that motivated them to bring out the Mark IV. There is still a matter of the large price difference between a stainless steel Mark IV and the stainless steel Victory. My main problem with the Victory is the grip. It's uglier than the grip on the Mark III and Mark IV, and it's too slippery. Fortunately, the Victory is cheap enough that one can get an after market grip which solves that issue. Having to use an Allen wrench to take down the Victory doesn't matter to me because Allen wrenches are easy to come by.

Thanks Plinkster, Found your channel by mistake as I was researching for a .22 semi auto to take camping and on road trips to the mountains and for a B.O.B.
Like me your a Southern Boy, I'm from Virginia and can understand everything your saying.
Your info and videos have helped me make my decision.
It had come down to these 2 guns and I'm picking up my Ruger Mark IV 22/45 tomorrow.
I'm getting it for $ 345 out the door.
The easy take down is what eventually won the day.

Guys , what u need to do is tell the wife that you bought it just to protect her because you saw some strange foot prints by the bed room window and maybe drop a few cigarette buts by the window also . She will never guess the foot prints are yours and the cigarette buts needs to be different from yours if you smoke . Tiny cut in the screen would be a nice touch .
She will probably send you back to the gun shop for your favorite shot gun too .

Hello Plinkster! Always love your vids and reviews.
For the past 3 years I have been shooting in a local recreational Bullseye league. I do pretty well. In fact, have won both of the last two years and for 24 straight sessions have the high score. My best is a 490/500. We shoot at 25, 25, 50 and 75 ft during each session. Strong hand, weak hand and two hands. I also enjoy long distance shooting with handguns out to and beyond 200 yards.
My primary guns for this type of shooting are a MK3 22/45 that is tricked up with most VQ parts, a GP100 match, and a Walther Q5. All three guns have a Venom red dot (3moa)
I feel a bit as if I have outgrown the MK3. Been considering the following:
    - Volquartsen Scorpion
    - Keeping my MK3 but putting a VQ Upper and Bolt on it.
    - Smith & Wesson Model 41
    - Walther Esse Sport
So why? I want the most accurate setup possible for a reasonable investment (let’s say under $1800). I do want to use the gun for my current league.
So have any opinions to share? Thoughts? I love the idea of going Scorpion. The Esse is a sexy gun and the price is a lot less. Also, it’s unique and I like unique. The 42 well that’s a old classic favorite.
    Thanks!

I've recently purchased a S&W M&P 22 Compact and an M&P 9 2.0. Both had issues. The 22 had many failure to feed and eject issues, and the 9mm came with a big gouge in the barrel...UNDER the coating. It was replaced by the seller. I had to replace the trigger in the M&P 2.0 to make it acceptable. Long story short, I just bought my wife a Ruger Mark IV Target to replace her M&P 22 Compact. Zero complaints so far.

I would take the Smith & Wesson because of the finish, but I love the Ruger. I have a Jennings J-22 that is 100% reliable for the first three magazines (with premium ammo). After three or four mags through the gun and it gets too dirty to function reliably. These guns you're reviewing here are great for drawer guns. They can put nine shots into someone's head or body in four seconds easy. I've got the 22/45 and like it, but I've heard they aren't quite as reliable because of the grip angle. Never had any problem with mine, though.

I say Browning Buckmark is the answer. "Ruger's little dirty secret".
"The best way to address the firepower concern is therefore not to try to outlaw or license many millions of older and perfectly legitimate firearms (which would be a licensing effort of staggering proportions) but to prohibit the possession of high capacity magazines. By a simple, complete and unequivocal ban on large capacity magazines, all the difficulty of defining 'assault rifle' and 'semi-automatic rifles' is eliminated. The large capacity magazine itself, separate or attached to the firearm, becomes the prohibited item. A single amendment to Federal firearms laws could effectively implement these objectives".
      William B. Ruger.

I have several S&W revolvers, and I am waiting for their quality control to come back up before I buy another new one. However, when I first saw the Victory, I couldn't help but think, "Shame on you, S&W. You made a cheap copy of Ruger's oldest design. Can't you have any new ideas of your own? I've got one for you: How about putting the firing pin back on the hammers on your revolvers, and bringing back the Model 19, and a real Model 586 and Model 66?" Hopefully, they will get it straight while I am still able to shoot.

I love mine, never had any issues really. Maybe you just had bad ammo? They are accuratized match/race guns they can be picky about ammo. Volquartsen themselves tell you not to run jacketed, hollow points or high velocity .22 in their guns(aka dont run your jacketed mini mags). I recommend Eley Match ammo. My scorpion makes a ragged hole on a rest but the main advantage is the 2.25 trigger and compensator when speed shooting steel plates, gun stays super flat.
