It's crazy how they spread and grow in the right conditions. They are, beyond a doubt, one of my top two favorite plants to eat from our yarden. I love it! Thank you for sharing. :)
I grow these here in NSW Australia (subtropical) and they grow like mad and produce tons of cucamelons. If you're into pickling, these things are PERFECT for the job. They make nice little olive-sized pickles that we love.
Thanks for your video! I have about 7 plants just getting going and now I know I'll trim off some of those side shoots. There's no way they will all fit on the trellis. I had a couple of extras that I planted on their own in other areas that had available space to climb (now I'm thinking, "Maybe not ENOUGH space"). It's going to be interesting! Fortunately my grandchildren absolutely love dill pickles and most of our cucamelons will end up pickled. Would be great Christmas gifts for neighbors, too! (zone 5 here - Montana)
@@SoilandMargaritas After thinking more about it I decided to move 4 of my cucamelon plants to grow bags along a fence. It took some untangling but they are handling the move without too much whining. The other two in the garden will go to friends. They are so small and whispy but I know now that that is just an illusion to lure us into believing they are weak and innocent. Ha! It's a trap! 😲

Wow, what a beautiful garden. I'm along the foggier California coast but i'm going to look for these seeds and try. I hope animals don't like them. Thanks for the video
Great video! I have potted up my seeds but no germination yet. This is my first year growing them and they are the crop I am most looking forward to! Those tendrils are heavy duty 😂
After seeing these in one of your earlier videos I tried to order and find at my local garden centers with no luck. When I finally saw the at Home Depot they were dead and dried out but at full price and they would give me a discount. I will hopefully get some and attempt to grow the next year in my garden.
Aww, yes, I keep hearing that seeds are in shortage this year, well.. I do have a giveaway in one of my last videos where one of the seeds is cucamelons :) Good luck!
Thank you for sharing 🙏😊 I grew cucamelons for the first time last year from baby plants and they did amazing! This year I am starting with seeds. You mentioned in your video that you trimmed the seedlings… can you please explain how and why? Thank you!
So, this was my first time growing cucamelons (2020) that year and I started way too early....so the vines were out of control growing like crazy in my warm environment, so I literally cut the vines in half when they were too large to handle and they did fine, I feel like that even pushed the plants to send more side vines. You don't have to do this if your seedlings are doing fine, me pruning the vines was just put of convenience. I did towards the end of the season had to prune the whole plant about a third because it was taking over the whole side of the raised bed, these cucamelons need room to grow for sure. Good luck!
@@SoilandMargaritas thats impressive, I don't know how hardy these are, but its usually pretty hard to keep plants alive over a night of frost. I also live at zone 5 in Russia, and this year we couldn't save grapes from a couple of nights of frost in june. Cucumbers survived though. The temperature was around -4C (25F)
I grew some. But due to our weird weather this year, they have struggled with blossom drop & haven't produced anything so far. They are on their way out, to be honest. Your's look super healthy! Did you make refrigerator pickles & did you like them?
I still have not made any fermented pickles, the few real size cucumbers (Don't get me started on that) that I got we used right away, and these cucamelons while they produced A LOT, we never had enough to make anything extra, we eat them fresh from the vine... between me and my kids/husband, we enjoyed them constantly.
Marigold, basil and nasturtiums seem to be the helpers to repel insects, I had them all over my beds in between my veggies last year, no insecticides other than a little bit of neem oil for my zuchinni and melons but I only sprayed twice or so during the season to give them a little bit of help.
Question lol I planted 1 seed in 1 medium pot, I have like 6 seedlings 😅 are they each individual plants or is something else growing in the pot ? I previously had cherry tomatoes in it but the 1 plant died and nothing else was growing in it. I'm so confused 😅
Hey! I ordered some of these seeds and am looking forward to growing them! May I ask, why did you say 'getting ready to cut a 3rd of the vines'? Do you need to cut them after plucking all the cucamelons out? I'm so new to this
The reason why I gave them a big trim was because they were taking over the whole bed from side to side, I had peppers and other things there so that was a way for me to keep them in control, in retrospect I should had provided a taller trellis because they grow like crazy!
I am planning to germinate them. This is my first time growing. Where did you put to germinate? Do you need to water them every day? I normally plant them in 3rd week of May. When should I germinate them?
@@chrischen9589 you can direct sow them at that time, or you can start them indoors in a 3” container or so about 3 weeks before that time, just be careful with the roots.
They are supposed to be a combo of a cucumber and a melon, I feel like they are more on the cucumber side of taste BUT this kinda depends on who you ask I think.
Thank you for such an in depth video. The cucamelons looks like they like to grow in the shade rather than full sun. Would that be a good assumption? Greetings from sunny hot Florida!!
@@lorisilva10784 i saw someone's video who grew them in florida and they said afternoon sun was making them struggle a lot. She gre them the following year shade in the morning and shade in the afternoon and they grew amazingly for her
These things grow native in my environment but for some reason it took them 6 weeks to even get 2 leaves and they are micro small. They look nothing like yours. I think I need to invest in better lights or something, so I put them outside to see if that helps. Strangely enough my peppers and tomatoes grew effortlessly fast under my lights.
Oh wow, I am waiting about 3 weeks before my last frost to start them indoors, these things took off for me so quickly, I had to make them their own little trellis in their containers, peppers and tomatoes do well for me as well, if nothing else, I'll have tomatoes and peppers for sure lol
Very nice, I live in Buffalo being growing them on Kratky Method Hydroponic I have them hanging on my porch with my other plants. Also growing them in 5-gallon bucket with a planter that I made myself work great.
I have a question if u can help. This is my first year growing cucamelons and i have 4 of them in a 10 gallon pot growing up a trellis. It seems as they start to flower and grow maybe a centimeter or 2 they fall off. Any reason why or what im doing wrong? Any help.would be greatful!
There are a couple of reasons why plants drop flowers, soil conditions, extreme heat, water issues, my cucamelons have been so productive and strong plants as far as growing and producing.
What's the temp needed to be planted outside my climate is mixed all year round in summer its mainly lots of rain and sun but tems get to 25C highest any higher than that is rare and the germination was fast only 4 days for germination to happen
I made this trellis from some leftover pieces of cattle panel, they were identical pieces so I just put them in a pyramid shape on the raised bed and helped it together with zip ties on top... Nothing fancy.
They don't grow big, once they are the size of a medium grape you know they are ready, plus if they stay in the plant too much longer you will notice the skin gets a bit thicker (but not too hard) so once you grow them you will find out when they are ready.

hi, "overnight temps in the 15s" mean in the 15 fahrenheit? thats like -10c, meaning way below freezing point? and one still managed to survive?

Can i get some seeds to grow
What was the yield per plant in season?
I didn’t weight them like I’m doing everything else, but if I had to guess.. up until now, I would probably harvested close to 3 quarts full
Did you cut the side shoots or let them grow?
I pruned the side shoots because they wanted to take over the whole bed.
I didn’t know that it can be eaten. Everytime 1 plant grew in my garden i picked the plant and throw away.
Whaaaaaa!?! They are delish!
Where can I buy the seeds
Baker Creeks, Johnnys, Pine tree seeds
what is tajin?
Tajin is a mexican seasoning mix that is mostly used with fruit and I also love it when I sprinkle some on cucumbers or Jicama.
