I met a hunter in the woods that said he didn’t see any deer . I was covered in deer . When the wind hit him I smelled his English leather. I couldn’t help but laugh . Camo , is something you could study a lifetime.
Very good presentation. When I first entered " this man's Army" , we wore solid olive green uniforms . After even a few minutes of tactical training, those uniforms were no longer of one color. Grass stains, sand, mud , water, and sweat all combined to make them splotchy. Thank you very much
Any approach to camouflage, to be effective, needs to take into account how the eyes work of the species you're trying to avoid being noticed by. Human eyesight is actually quite good. We are predatory animals, which means our eyes are forward-looking, and quite sharp in acuity, and we have very good depth perception. Prey animals tend to have their eyes more to the sides of their heads, giving them a much greater field of vision, but they're less able to perceive depth and their vision isn't as sharp. All animals, humans included, are looking for the same threats. You want your appearance to trick the eyes of who or what you're hiding from into dismissing you as background noise.
Look to nature. There are two excellent examples of predator animals taking the two different approaches to camouflage: the tiger and the leopard.
A tiger has a macro pattern. Why? The tiger hunts by stalking its prey. It moves, slowly, from a distance, until it can get close enough to a target and then chases it down to kill it. The macro pattern of random vertical stripes makes it difficult for prey animals to notice its movement in tall grass, or notice the silhouette of the tiger from a distance. Prey animals are looking for symmetrical shapes, and the contrast between a stalking predator and the environment. The macro pattern disrupts this silhouette and the vertical shapes blend in with the environment. When you take into account the color vision of the tiger's ungulate prey, which lacks the color red, the orange and black stripes look basically yellowish-gray and black, blending in perfectly with the environment. Ungulates' vision also largely lacks depth perception, and so by the time a tiger is close enough for its pattern to be differentiated from the pattern of light and shadow among tall grasses, the tiger is probably within a lethal striking distance.
A leopard has a micro pattern. Why? The leopard hunts by lying in wait, and ambushing prey. It doesn't move at all on the hunt, waiting for prey animals to get close enough to it instead. Its camouflage has to stand up to scrutiny from a much closer distance, and blend in well enough with the environment in color so the prey animal's eyes don't notice the leopard as something at all. A leopard doesn't need a macro pattern to disrupt its appearance at a distance, or disguise its movement, because the leopard doesn't rely on stalking to hunt, so it doesn't matter how visible a leopard is at a distance.
Think of macro patterns and micro patterns as being two kinds of camouflage for two different distances, as well as motion vs. static. Thankfully, we humans are not limited by what nature as given us for our own appearance, and we can change ourselves to look like a combination of both macro and micro patterns, by wearing clothes, gaining the advantages of both types.
The ideal camouflage uses a disruptive macro pattern which causes the eyes of prey (or other humans who might be predators or prey) to ignore the camouflage from a distance, even while moving, and then has micro details in appropriate colors overlaid to help blend in with the environment, while motionless and close enough to matter.

Excellent breakdown! My favorite camouflage for my area is the Pnuma Caza camo licensed through Veil Camo. Some of Veil’s camo patterns are VERY good depending your environment, but I’ve found the technology of Pnuma’s clothing combined with the camo from veil is EXCELLENT for most of the Midwest and Southern United States. Macros and Micros, as you said.

Carlos Hathcock crawled on his side for several days during his famous stalk in Vietnam to take out that nva officer. he said in a interview that that it was very uncomfortable but it doesn't leave a "slug trail ". He didn't say this but I'm sure from experience that his trail looked like a game trail or the trail of a large snake which is a likely possibility in the part of the world he was in.
Take some small twigs with leaves and weave it through your boot laces, takes away the shoe shape.
The thing about mimic camouflage is if you're not correct than you'd be better off naked than with what incorrect camouflage you may have on. If you're on the offensive position then choose something that matches the leaves or rock of you environment, if your in a defensive/reconnaissance position then choose something that represents underbrush/dead leaves. You have to think of season, environment, and your position in the situation. If you're in an offensive position than you're more likely to be standing and moving, while reconnaissance and defense mean you're already where you need to be. You'll more likely want mimic cover in a defensive position since you can stick live samples in the mesh of a ghillie suit and you know the color pallet of your environment.
I've got my fatigues but their pack away for when I actually need them. So I go all earth tones with pretty much everything I wear. I just picked up an olive green full wool light weight bow hunter parka with a deep hood and this thing is totally silent and blends in to my surroundings well. My packs are max out so an added water proof sack is probably not going to happen, but I do have slick separate rain covers I can drag them on with para cord and maybe I can camo spray paint them up a little. The only thing I can add ,is Being totally stationary in camo ,is very effective, as soon as you move your target practice. Being a rock ,next to a tree or an extension of a tree branch up in a tree ,WITHOUT ANY MOVEMENT IS VERY EFFECTIVE, to avade any attention. I've had people walk right next to me ,so close I could touch them, and they did not see me ,cos I was a tree ,arms out like branches and camo net over me . :) it's fun ! :)
In air force cadets I played a game called Lantern Stalk. At night, your objective is to grab the lantern without being spotted by the higher ranks. Too many times I gave away my position because I was stepped on. Truly invisible!
The best defense for puppies is to stand still, make no noise. Like in those vids of small lion cubs surrounded by buffalos, they can smell them but they're not sure where are they. Another great video, you are awesome guys.

Cut a scrap of laminate floor underlay foam to suit your canteen, pierce a lot of holes into it so water can pass through when required.
Roll up and stuff into canteen and allow to unroll fully, it should seat naturally.
In use it floats on the water surface and minimises the ability to slosh.
Remove periodically to disinfect.

What do you do about smell?
Yep, can't get in a hurry, movement is a location killer. Glass deep field & slow rotation. Stretch slow, cough in clothing, itch slow, hear something, look slow. I use leafy suit & head net. Bugs can harass you with paint only.
Lastly, walking with short steps helps camo the gap between legs open and close, also if snagged up, stopping is easier. / Balance for trip less too
STOP BEFORE every opening, glass slow slow slow, ease up to a clearing with great patience

I remember many years ago, one morning while bow hunting whitetail deer I’d tied up my climbing deer stand, got everything secured, arrow on the bow string, all set to go about maybe 20 minutes before the first hint of light. Slowly, minute by minute shapes started to become visible. As soon as I was able to start seeing details just before sunrise, I happened to look right into the eyes of this BEAUTIFUL big, barred owl staring right at me. On a branch at eye level, maybe five feet away. I probably could have reached out and touched him with an arrow. But we both just sat perfectly still. Then he turned his head facing off to the side, spread his big wings and flew away in complete silence. Absolutely no sound. But before he flew off I couldn’t help but notice how PERFECTLY he blended in with the tree branches and the trunk of the next tree close by. They’re absolute masters of camouflage and silence. In all likelihood if I hadn’t seen the bird directly, he may have flown off completely unnoticed if I’d just been looking in the other direction. I’m glad I saw it. This is a great video and it just reminded me of that experience. Also, around that time I remember reading an article regarding silhouettes and how the patterns in camo should be used to break up the human form. Whoever wrote the article made a point that stuck with me all these years. When a deer sees the outline of a person, in all likelihood their response is like when we’re driving, going around a curve, when you spot the car parked off to the side facing the traffic. We spot the lights on top of the vehicle, even if they’re low profile and off. And the two vertical reinforcements on the front of the vehicle, usually black. For everyone who’s suddenly seen those lights suddenly flash on to bright blue, we all know that reaction. Hit the brakes, even if you’re not speeding. Even if the lights don’t turn on, we have that brief moment of panic. It’s been quite a few years since I’ve read that article, and quite a few years since I’ve seen those blue lights flash to life. But that relatable example of recognizing patterns is probably the best I’ve ever read. So the moral of the story is, even barred owls and police cars can teach us a thing or two about camouflage.

I would like to say thank you for your informative videos being here on the UA-cam. If I can share my stories now, being able to blend in the environment I'm good at currently. Even me being here is just another perspective to saying "millennial" I like to use my abilities to logically connect ideas and experience them on my own. Even I'm not in the military, I would like to soon planning to fight with Japanese Defense Force since they take defensive actions/courses. As a man who tries to educate in more traditional values and practices Its always not good for me to be in internet for the health reasons. Later you will say what kind of man would say that? Then also the month of November is a thankfulness month, I've got to say thank you Black Scout Survival for educating us here in UA-cam in being the Sheep Dog instructor, escape and evasion tips, and using your time teaching us the military survival craft.

I'm impressed, a channel with good fucking information. Had a buddy that went through SERE school and the old woodland pattern was very effective. So effective, that he lost the dude he was paired up with. These newer digital patterns aren't well thought out. That Rhodesian stuff seems like a good design. A have a book called The German Sniper by Peter R. Senich and there is a photo of a German sniper with a similar pattern. It wasn't an amazing photo. You couldn't see him.

What's your opinion on camo for a bug out situation? Would it be better to use the combination camouflage to be more gray man if you're moving from woodland environments through urban, or would you prefer using an effective camouflage pattern for the woodland environment and changing if you need to move through urban areas to maintain a gray man type presence?

Ever since I can remember I was told the power of the eyes I was always told don't look at whatever your stalking \avoiding because if you do it will look right at you look off to the side its odd but it works! I've never understood it.

Back in the 1980's I did a lot of wildlife photography where I live in the desert southwest. I got a large sheet of cloth 7'x7' that bore the chocolate chip desert camouflage pattern used by the military, and used it as a blind. My camera's tripod-mounted 300mm long lens was covered with a "spandoflage" tube and I was set up over the steep bank overlooking an oxbow where I'd been trying to photograph the the nest of a pair of Great Blue Herons. Shortly after dawn, a Cooper's Hawk tried to land on the lens of the camera, I had to reach out to wave it away. Guess my camo fooled him...

Bottom line is get into total fighting shape. Try doing a sniper crawl or even a low crawl (without being spotted) then engaging a target, 500 yds. or more away. Once that's accomplished didimou the heck out and still be alive later. If you don't practice repeatedly, you will die! let that sink in folks.
would love to see a video on how to blend in with your urban environment, like how to hide your appearance but still look like a normal guy and how to avoid the people after without causing bloodshed

The earth tone color acts almost like a gray man tactic.
. Hopefully when hunting I won't need cover - except in bad weather! But yeah, wildlife depends on SOUND, SIGHT and SMELL foremost. Learning to hunt well is great training for avoiding human detection. Two different camo patterns (but similar color) for shirt/coat and pants break up shape uniformity bit. Canteen? I use a hydration bladder. Quiet and less movement.

it means blending in with the surrounding not cheating.
You would not stand up in a ghillie suit you would be crawling or crouch walking. Camouflage usually works from 50-100M away because those are common engagement ranges for soldiers.
When you make a ghillie suit you should use it. Hike in it. Crawl in it. Get dirty in it then rinse it off with a hose. Repeat. This process will make more worn and more blending with the environment around you.
I do that flashlight trick when I drop something all the time lol.
Even though i know this stuff. I saved it anyways too my computer. Its a good video to reminding of everything you need to be reminded of when hunting and hiding. I have even played paint ball and saw so many mistakes they was making.
Most of them was running around like they was crazy. Or a little kid waving his arms trying to get attention.
Moving around to fast always shows your position. I would lay on the ground, and my own team could not see me a few feet away. And i can smell a smoker from far away. I used to tell a co worker i could smell him from another floor in a parking garage. He thought i was telling a lie. Most city people dont understand these things.
They are used to walking around from place to place not paying attention to anything but the phone they carry.
Take time to go outdoors for more then just getting from place to place.
Setting and watching TV and internet all the time will destroy your body.

I hate to tell you but paintball is meant to be an action packed game. You're supposed run like crazy, if you watch any videos of college paintball you would see what I'm talking about.
jojo+ Try a Philippino Nigrito they can smell you in the next jungle. Use to scare the Japanese on the trails at nite. Slit every other member of the patrols throats. They love sneaking up on K-9 patrols and marking left hind paws on the inside.
Yeah, I dont play collage paintball like he said. We play in the forest. Like a bunch of snipers. Those who ran around died fast. Most just ram by us, because they could not see us. I have seen the ones they set up. And even play inside buildings. Now thats a different story. Like any battle in war. Things change with different terrain. I have trained so much, I scare the people i work with all the time. They never expect you to just be standing around in a hall. I even made a few videos showing me scaring some of my co workers. Scaring people is funny as long as they can take a joke, and dont shoot you ;)

im no sniper but i do hunt and i think the sniper slow crawl is a bit fast for me, depending on the situation as you said danger is close by is why im slowing down a little more caution like still hunting. God is Love 219, psalm51

deer do not have good eyes, they sense motion but thats about it. smell and hearing is where theyll bust you. however turkey have very good eyes. great channel btw.
Is there an effective way to sneak/camouflage without leaving such a defined trail? The low crawl really drags things around with you.
Cat crawl, dont crush leaves, use only hard surfaces if possible, dont scuff rocks, bark, trees. Dont crush plants, leave no trace. Dont drag, lift up body part then place in new spot.
Duck walk like a miner and keep your sight trained, not your sites

My big issue with digital camo is that it looks like a blur , instead of foliage.
In the British army we called it Shape, Shine, Shadow, Silhouette and Movement.
Call is shape, shine, shadow, silhouette and shuffling for those OCD folks out there
