Hi Matt, The “cover paper” for each sheet is glassine, it’s non-wax. The blending on pastelmat is much essier once there are at least two or three layers down. Pastelmat is also suitable for acrylics, oils, watercolour etc in fact virtually any medium 🙂 The best way to utilise pastels on pastelmat is to use pastels for under layers then pastel pencils for details. The only issue I encounter with pastelmat is what I call “hot spots” where pastel may not take to a certain part of the sheet. This doesn’t happen often, and correct storage is important. I forgot to mention that no fixative is needed. Hope this helps. 🙂
Rusty Johnson Hi Rusty, I don’t fix my work, there’s no need to on pastelmat, which is what I stated already to Matt 😉. Therefore the hotspots are nothing to do with fixative in my case, they are to do with quality control and poor storage prior to buying. I am not the only one who has the issue, I have had 3 artworks completely ruined because of “hotspots.” I know how to store properly, but thanks anyway. 🙂
Rusty Johnson Hi Rusty, yes and no - pastelmat is not a rough surface, it is smooth, but has plenty of tooth to grab the pastel at the same time. What I would suggest, is contact clairefontain and explain you are on a tight budget and could they kindly provide you with a sample. I am on a budget too, and only managed to buy mine because it was half price (in the uk) at greatart website. I have asked a couple of art based companies before for samples and they usually oblige. Write to a few who’s products you are interested in.
@@Kyomiibrown hi! Where do you storage your artwork for Pastelmat? I use the glassine paper, and storage my artwork in a plastic box with lid. How do you storage your artwork?
@@claritzairosario68 That is more or less what I do also ensuring the room where it is stored is not humid or experiencing any damp in the walls.
@@Kyomiibrown oh, ok, I will verify my artwork and the room I storeged. Thank you!
Newbie to the pastels and pastelmat. I could blend and layer properly on this pastelmat. It's just awesome. I tried previously on other kinds of paper, that dint work well. When something works like magic for a beginner, then it is a super hit product. Thanks for the video.
I’m new here and I love your demonstration ! I use Pastel mat a few year now and I love it ! Nowadays there are more colors of the paper , such as warm brown, green, black . I once began drawing on My Teinte paper and than the Pastel Mat and always use it , it’s like you said, you can draw layer on layer on layer and it is sooo smooth !!
Thanks for the great video. I use PastelMat for all my pastel painting. I agree that it is the best paper to use. I do animal and human portraits using pastel pencils and regular pastels.
This video is dripping passion for art. The instructor is so happy with his, I must say, fabulous apple. If it wasn't so very late right now I would leave my bed, wake the neighbors up and well... draw apples lol. So much fun this video, will try the pastelmat for sure 👍
Hi Matt,
Great review. I have started using Pastelmat a little - I caved in and spent the money because I had to see how it handled pastels. And it made my experience with pastels all I had ever imagined they could be. That doesn't mean that I suddenly became more talented but the pastels and I could work together. Prior to that, it felt almost like we were fighting. I would lay down the pastel and half of it would jump back off the paper as dust. The Pastelmat seems to hold onto the medium. As some have noted, this makes it more challenging to blend - but I like the blending results better! I don't have the same love of blending with my fingers that you do. To blend, I found that if I put a tissue (like ordinary Kleenex) over my finger that it blended better on Pastelmat, with the added benefit of my fingers not getting so dirty. Also, I'm less apt to forget what color is on a particular finger and accidentally create a mess. So I've become a Pastelmat fan very quickly...
Jason Morgan - Wildlife Art recommends this paper as well. His results are really quite amazing. Loved this review and the demo. The apple looks fantastic. Thank you for sharing.
I was just going to say the same thing. He gets very realistic drawings using pastel pencils with this paper.
@@chriswhitehouse8982 he also uses pan pastels for the underpainting.
I purchased this paper, stick pastels and pastel pencils. I’m so nervous to start as I can go along great with a video, but on my own, I’m no good. I’m going to try this out. I’d like to try your Goldfish video as well. I like your teaching style. Thank you for sharing!
I like the green you did with the water.....would make a lovely background for birds or forest
I have tried so many pastel papers but I keep going back to Pastel mat! It's a little pricey but well worth it for me.
I've seen people really happy using this paper for colored pencils. I'm gonna try that
une rare démo avec ses commentaires exceptionnels ,thank You
That was a fantastic tutorial, thank you!
Hi Matt, Can you do a demo using pastel pans? I am a watercolor artist but would like to try pastels again. I hear the pans are terrific. Thank you for your amazing tutorial too.
It also has another benefit: you can wash the pastel off if you make a mistake. It doesn't take it back to the original colour, but it does take a lot of the pastel off and therefore makes it easier to start a new drawing.
Kerry B You can also gently scrape it off with the blunt edge of a knife, it comes off like a dream.
Thank you for this demonstration. It’s precisely what I needed to know.
Is pastel mat paper and pastel mat the same product or two different?
THANK you. This helps me so much.
That is a nice looking apple.
❤
I just used pastelmat and was not as happy as I thought I would be.
Very difficult to blend, if at all. Plus,
Very easy to smudge
Thank you for the video. I appreciate the info on the pastelmat.
Vraiment doué dans la maîtrise du pastel sec et pastel à l'huile, moi personnellement j'ai jamais réussi! Bravo
Hi Matt thanks for sharing I love your work
Wow, the background show cases the Apple shape and looks awesome. Tgganj you. Can pursue pastels 👏👏👏👍👍👍❤
Simply excellent
Going to try this paper
You remind me of listening to bob Ross. Very relaxing and lovely work.
Hi. Thanks for the review and demo. Now it’s time for you to review and demo the Pan Pastels??
I have changed the colour of a whole sheet of pastelmat paper with watercolour paint.....and then did my picture right over the top.
Beautiful 👏👏👏
Excellent demo....
This paper is very good for colour pencils too
Can you use coloured pencils (polychromos, luminance, derwent lightfast etc) over it to add details ?
@@rodgerjohnson297 yes you can......you can’t get coloured pencils to work very well over pastel. But pencil works well over watercolour on pastelmat .... coloured pencil alone on pastelmat works well.........I used a fixative spray when I was finished 🙂🙂
Hi Matt, I loved your video tutorial using the Pastelmat.
I haven't done any pastel drawing/painting yet but getting ready to start. I'm wondering about doing pastels on other surfaces. I am also a picture framer and I have an abundance of mat board. Do you think pastels would do ok using this type of mat board?
Thanks,
Ron
Thank you for this review. I love Pastelmat, but I have the problem that dust gets in the pores of the paper and only kann be removed by a brush
ok
It seems like the colors I put down are the colors. The colors don’t seem to layer or blend. I have Uart for years and it is difficult to transition from what I am used to. I see why people like it. I will keep trying it though.
Very nice
Hi, Mat, thanks for info on this paper. Have you tried the Hahnemuhle velour pad or the pastelfix by the same company?
Would love you for you to do a review on, as cheaper than the pastelmat. Dickblick sells the pads. Please do a review if able.
I have heard velour does not create a lot of dust.
What does the numbers mean like number 1
Hi. I love your tutorials!
Would you be able to recommend a home printer that could print line art onto pastel paper and cardstock? I'm trying to figure out how to print images on both to then colour them myself. I want to use pastels on images printed pastel paper, and the same coloured pencils and markers on cardstock. If possible, I'd also like to do the same on watercolour paper.
I hope that makes sense. 😊
Hi, I bought Pastel mat Anthrocite and find it very difficult to blend large areas?
Please do demo on meteintes touch.. sanded paper.....please
Hi Matt, thank you so much for the informative video. What does the numbers mean? like pastelmat No1 .
Do the oils in your finger affect the pastels?
Matt, I paint realism using mostly Apersand Pastelbord. Can you tell me how the grit compares to Pastelbord and Uart 600? thanks!
Hi Matt, do you use a fixative on your pastel drawings?
Can you review generals pastel pencils
Wah type of coloured pencils can you add for details if any?
How do you transfer a detailed drawing to pastel mat?
Same as any other transfer. You can cover the back of your drawing with pastel and then trace your drawing onto the pastel paper.
Does this surface take oil pastel?
It does...
Check Richallannbass on IG to see wonderful results
I was told that if you only do artwork on the paper and no background it’s called a drawing. If you also do the background and artwork it’s called a painting.
En donde se vende este papel Mat
Where can I buy this
good
❤❤❤❤❤
I like meteintes touch more than this for one reason....pastelmat is difficult to blend....
how does this compare with Canson mi teintes pastel paper?
Mi tenines is not a sanded paper at all. Its surface has a small bit of texture that helps to hold the pastels on. If a breeze should happen to blow through your window on a spring day, the surface texture on mi tenines may prevent the pastel from floating off the paper. It is a very different animal than any brand of a sanded surface substrate. The feeling of layering process, both physically as well as visually, that can be done on each paper's surface is quite different. For me, it is somewhat like the experience of licking a Popsicle vs indulging in your favorite flavor of Ben and Jerry's ice cream, covered in hot fudge and topped of with a mound of whipped cream. The good news is that both papers can be beautifully used. I just happen to be a sugar addict.
Hi, Have you tried the Velour papers? I wonder how they do.
Lisa Bellinger Velour is a whole different ball game. You cannot blend on velour but there is no need to. Check out Emma Colbert.
I have seen her. That is why I asked if he had tried the paper. I wanted to see him do it. He is a good teacher. thank you for telling me.
Lisa Bellinger He is a good teacher but, no disrespect to Matt, Emma has been using velour for years, she knows it inside out, so she is definitely the one to watch/ask regarding velour.
Thanks.
Lisa Bellinger No problem. I also use velour. I prefer it to pastelmat but if you like to blend yourself then it might not be for you. You can buy a test pack of velour to start you off. As long as you don’t expect it to work like pastelmat or any other pastel paper then you will be fine. It’s great paper but is definitely a learning curve.
you mean you tested the pastel sticks on a whole sheet of pastelmat .... that's being a real spendthrift I say..these papers are sooooooo expensive' oh.that was five years ago..now i am sure you are more wary when using these pastel mat sheets ....whenever i start a new painting i tremble before i put my pencil on the surface of this paper
This surface is supposed to be ....dark to light..like oils
mm👏😳
water, I put water on mine and it took the top layer off the paper?? so, I am not following this, it doesn't make sense what you are doing.
