    When I was a kid, I lived in the northern Finland. I Remember vividly when I was 11 years old, on the beginning my summer vacation (schoolyear was just over) and I wanted to visit my friend (who was same age as me) in Lapland - 130km's away. So I asked my mum, that can we go and spend few days there? My mum said "no - no we can't. Not at this time anyway". I was furious. I said to my mum, that if you don't drive me there - then, I shall...I shall...I shall take my bicycle - and I will go there on my own anyway!!!!
    My mom looked at me with a smile, and asked "Are you sure? It's a long way away, and it's gonna take you hours and hours to ride your way up there. And the weather can turn bad".
    I said "Yes, I'm sure! It's summer! How bad the weather can be? Since you won't take me, I'll take my bike and go on my own. Tomorrow morning, I'll go"!
    My mum sighed, and said "OK, I'll make you some snacks to go for tomorrow morning".
    Next morning my mom gave me some snacks to go, remind me to be careful and wished me a good journey.
    So I hopped on my bike and went on my way.
    Almost 10 hours it took, but I made it there :) And I was 11 years old.
    This is to show you how independent the kids are in Finland - especially in the northern Finland.

      It!s long way, good job.
      I'm also from northern Finland. My son was about 10 years old in the 4th grade, asked if he gets a Christmas certificate for English 10, if I can go ALONE by plane to Helsinki to visit relatives. I promised it without a moment's hesitation. So HE left Oulu by plane to Helsinki after the summer vacation started.
      The story is nothing like when my sister in Stockholm experienced a similar story. His 7-year-old son traveled from Stockholm by plane ALONE to Helsinki, changed planes and flew to Oulu to visit his grandparents for the summer vacation.
      Of course, travel with the assistance and responsibility of the flight crew.

    They wash the eggs in north America because there is a lot of salmonella. In Finland and most of northern Europe there is basically no salmonella. I don't know if there is a lot of salmonella in Italy but for example in Greece there is. BTW you pronounced Rissanen perfectly at the end 10/10.

    Funnily enough, the maksalaatikko you can buy in stores tastes absolutely amazing, so pretty much much no one bothers making it themselves 😂 such a hassle to make, and the store version prolly still tastes better 😅
    Karelian pie on the other hand is totally different matter. The cheap floppy karelian pies are absolutely disgusting compared to properly made karelian pies. Even the half-baked and frozen ones you only need to put in the oven are 1000x better. Never ever buy the ones he was holding

    17:00 Yes, city rabbits or as we say 'city kanit' are a real thing.
    I don't live in Capital or really visit there. But I have heard from people around that they're huge and can easily destroy people's home gardens plants.
    I guess you could compare it to the situation of 'city foxes' in London? 🤔 That there are lots of them.
    17:27 Graveyards. If you ever visit Finland at around winter time, take a look at them at late evening or night too. They're beautiful when the candles are lit by the graves. ✨
    The feeling of it may be little eerie at first but over all, it is beautiful, peaceful and still.
    The most sure way to get that experience would be visiting a graveyard when it's Finland's Independence Day or at Christmas.
    19:30 Yeah. I remember from my childhood that I walked or cycled to and from school alone after finishing my first year (began as 7 year-old) of elementary school.
    I sometime dropped by local store myself too. To pick something that mom would have asked and given me some money and go buy it when coming home.

    I thought it's normal everywhere in Europe, as a Czech, I was going to school alone since like 7 years old, also running around and riding bike. But that was around 2000, world was much safer for kids back in the day, not so many cars as today, now they don't even see kids from their giant SUVs, so it's really dangerous for kids outside.

    • @haneski8020
      @haneski8020 2 місяці тому +3

      It's true, there are more cars etc, but we try to make things safe for kids. In Finland there are always campaigns during the first school week (autumn). "Remember, first graders start their school during this week. Be extra careful!“. You can see it on tv, internet, billboards and papers. That is also the one reason why people always stop at the red lights - even if there is no cars. Kids are learning from parents and when they are doing this by themselves it's safer. Most of the schools also demand helmet or you can't go to school by bike. And there are also free reflectors for kids for dark winter mornings.

    • @Pidalin
      @Pidalin 2 місяці тому

      @@haneski8020 Just more cars you say? 30 years ago, every third family had a car, now you have 3 cars in each family, this is pure car-nazism and it's killing kids, animals and other people, it's not sustainable, no matter what safety rules you make, with such absurd amount of cars, it's not possible to have safe streets and vice versa, things are more dangerous than before, because massive "communist" railing is bad now because it's ugly, so there are just thing columns now, do you think it will stop some crazy imbecile with 3 ton SUV? I don't think so and every 3rd car owner is crazy, alcoholic or literally future murderer, it's just matter of time. Also, streets are full of gopniks from east, cheaters from balkan and people like that, I hope they don't target kids, but you never know. In 90s, we had "wild 90s" as we call it, but they mafia-like "bussinesmen" targetet their competition, not random kids, I never felt in danger back in the day as a kid, now when I go outside, I feel good until I see first weirdo in tracksuit with that typical stupid gopnik haircut with arrow on forehead and I don't care if they are from U country or R country, they look and act the same.

      I biked to school since the day one of school (to those that don't know, in Finland, you typically start school the year you turned or will turn 7). In first few days my parent biked to school with me, but then I could do it on my own. At that point, I had some years (2-3?) of biking experience with driving around with parents. And before I could ride my bike, I had been a passanger in babyseat at a back of parent's bike, so traffic rules had been slowly introduced to me.
      I had 2km walk/ride to school. What a "torture" it was that my mam did not let me ride bike to school at winter time, when I was 7. I needed to walk and it felt like it took _ages_. 🤣 Since I was 8, I did bike to school also at winter. (Did I have winter tires in my bike? No, never, they were quite expensive. 😅) If it was actually cold (like -30 Celcius degrees), my parent might took me to school by car.

    In Helsinki, the traffic was mixed properly now that in addition to the regular streetcar traffic, there was an express streetcar. The maximum speed of an ordinary tram in the urban area is 50 km/h and it is obliged to give way to pedestrians on the crosswalk. But the maximum speed of the fast tram in the urban area is 70 km/h and it has right-of-way in relation to pedestrians and other traffic.
    (And by the way, you should patch those shelf bracket holes in your wall. I have already tried to wipe them as dirt stains from my own monitor many times.)

    If you say your name to a Finnish hotel receptionist, he/she would just write it down perfectly. At the most, she would ask "Nicolo? Is there a C or a K"? But 99% of the time, he/she would just get it spot on without asking. And your first name? Everybody in Finland would know how to spell it. :) As an interesting fact, there are somewhat common Finnish men's names, which are quite close to your first name - one of them is "Mauri". Other one is "Mauno". That's why your first name sounds very familiar. :)

    In Finland, if someone is homeless, they don't want to participate in that apartment first program because there are rules to improve their livelihood, so they are homeless of their own free will.

    • @bomdestructor
      @bomdestructor 19 днів тому

      Yes, there are some homeless by choice, but mostly in Finland we don't have that "apartment first" program how you call it. I know Helsinki has that, I don't know other bigger cities. Mostly there are homes enough in other cities, so person just can move with help from socialworkers. And there is some problems with that arragement, especially if you want to climb up back to society. Those communes are harsh place to start new life, eventhough it's almost impossible when you are homeless.
      And we still don't know the amount for those people, who are not officially homeless, because they live in someone elses place, trying to find own home. But atleast they have those friends and family, who can help.
