  • This wide cobblestone street in Greenwich Village is the location for this 28 unit residential project designed by the Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron.
The site occupies 5 narrow mid-block lots that had row houses in the 18th century. The architects combined two typologies, the row house below with an apartment block above. The ground level townhouse units are set back behind aluminum gates that are adapted from a collage of graffiti tags, translated to 3 dimensions. A slender lobby gives access to the apartment block above. The apartment block reinvents the exterior expression of the cast iron buildings found nearby. The facade is clad in a grid of curved glass elements with mirror finished stainless steel panels behind the glass.
You don’t have to go far to find food or drink. Right around the corner is The Wren, a gastropub that takes its inspiration from English pubs. Lots to choose from, especially the ethereal and well seasoned mushroom scramble,
Enjoy this unique neighborhood and this beautiful building.
