The biggest credit I can give mob is it knew how and when to end, this could have easily turned into a never ending gag manga with larger than life villains, but it had a story to tell, it told it and ended. Season 2 ep 11 stands as the best animated action episode ever and nothing will top it

It's cool to see someone with a hot take whose actually able to give valid reasons for their opinion. I don't agree with any of them, but I understand and can't exactly contest it since it's rooted in a rounded understanding of personal taste. I still think it's perfect in what it tries to do, but nothing perfect for everyone.
You truly are the Probably Pretentious.

At first I agree with your opinion on how Mob really preach it's message to the audience explicitly, like they literally give it in front of your face. But then I think about it again, and come to a conclusion that it's going to be really hard to make subtlety. Even Vinland Saga has this kind of writing to a certain degree. The whole "I have no enemy" speech from Thorfinn where he preach that "why should I fight/hate/kill you when we just meet each other for the first time" does this message directly on your face, but I don't find it corny or cringe honestly.
I think a story should mix between being explicit and subtle/implicit, which strikes the perfect balance. You need to be forceful and being upfront sometimes, but don't always hold your audience's hand with explicit message.

the show is fantastic from a writing perspective, although the third season’s content did feel like a big step down in comparison from the other two, right until the final three episodes. kinda felt like tying off loose ends rather than anything else. but those last few episodes were great.
animation wise, the first two seasons are absolutely astonishing. the third season is still fantastic, but generally lacking in comparison. while there’s still stand out moments (the alien episode, god dimple’s fight, and the final episode) overall everything else kinda was lacking. the mob at 100% in the final few episodes looked just fine. everything outside of action kinda looked just like normal flat anime story boarding, and overall the season was far less inventive and experimental with its animation (probably due to the director change).
but to look at the series holistically, it’s fantastic. it’s the kind of show that actually benefits from a rewatch, or watching on a binge.

the best episodes of mob psycho from an action perspective (and yes most episodes look incredible, including the character acting) are up there with some of the best animated fights in anime ever. especially in a modern perspective. literally the only ones that come to mind as of recent that even come close are Zoro Vs King in One Piece, JJK S2 episode 16 and 17, some of the gear 5 episodes (particularly the 4th or 5th i think) and the final aot episode.

your criticism of seriousness is so fair tbh. while i disagree slightly in terms of Mob, it’s exactly how i feel about JJK. trying to be comedic to the point it can be essentially a collection of unfunny gags, but also serious enough to where it can swap to seriousness and death and mass murder literally within seconds after a childish gag.
mob just kinda works better for me since the whole plot, characters, and world are inherintly more silly, being that the main drama is based around a teenager’s coming of age; and JJK’s main plot is much more serious, just being bogged down by pointless gags.
but that’s my opinion. so i can 100% see where you’re coming from. balancing tones in anime due to seriousness and shitty gags is probably it’s worst part, especially when adapting manga 1:1. anime directors need to realise we don’t need 1 minute extended sequences where characters out of nowhere turn into silly chibi versions shouting about nonsense, just because the manga has a singular panel of it. it’s jarring.
i feel like chainsaw man did it’s best at implementing those moments and gags into the actual base world and story. nothing feels jarring or like you’re cutting to a stupid anime gag. it flows like an actual show.
don’t get me wrong, those types of gags and cut aways can work; show like Azumanga Daiho or Nichijo wouldn’t work without them. but in shows like JJK, and as you point out, Mob, it’s just weird.

I'm curious what exactly you are talking about related to jjk and gags. When things are serious they are serious. There was no gags for the entirety of the shibuya arc which spans 18 episodes. There were gags in episode 6 when it was yuji nobara and megumi hanging out at the mall and meeting yuji's middle school fired.
There's a clear separation of seriousness and lightheartedness. The only moments where you could say that there was a blend was in the early parts of the story like epispde 4, but that's because the characters themselves didn't yet know the world they live in

  • @Indeeee
    @Indeeee 3 місяці тому +5

I actually kind of agree on the comedic aspect, the humour is too 'in your face' and times can get jarring (Reigen is really funny tho). Although the show does a good job at balancing the silly comedy with actually great character moments. That said, I don't find the lack of subtlety to be a problem at all. The show is good at what it does and thats enough for me.
One of the best part about the show for me is how it reaches its natural conclusion without streching the story any further. Personally I don't find the ending to be memorable at all but then again it doesn't need to be. It was a fitting ending to the story and thats what matters.
Also, I feel like the talented staff behind the show is what made this show so good. Don't get me wrong, ONE is a great writer but the anime adaptation is truly better in every single aspect. Shows like this is why I prefer the medium of anime over manga, its not about the fast consumption but quality consumption.
Also one final thing, I actually prefer the English dub.

Honestly this is a very valid take. I thought I was gonna be like "oh no here is Pretentious gonna be completely wrong about one of the best anime of all time," but I actually agree for the most part. They are pretty small issues, which you mentioned, but although I don't mind being preached to if it works, which I think like you mentioned it does due to the balance between absurdity, coming of age, and dramatic elements, if one of those elements don't appeal to you, then the preaching can get too much. I personally don't mind non-subtlety, I get that it can be obnoxious for a lot of people. No show is perfect, (except Wire season 1-4 and The Godfather) and this video shows that.

A coming of age story is aimed at a younger audience so I think it understadable that the points the author is trying to make are clearly stated. Some of the context is cut for time from the anime so that i an explanation why the first half of season 3 wan weaker to some people.
(spoilers)I personally don't like how dishonest some of the cliffhangers feel, I understand building tension but when Reigen 'dies' in season 1 or Mobs Parents die in season 2 I just feel betrayed rather then relieved when its revealed otherwise. like i’ve never actually laughed at any of the gags in JJK (and often think they’re extremely poorly timed), but when they’re done right, they’re not funny, but they’re extremely amusing and charming.

the gags in JJK and the seriousness and jjk are so incredibly seperated that im convinced you watched approximately 3 episodes before typing this. JJK only ever has gags whenever a gojo is on screen, or a arc at a gap between arcs. the highlight this, i don't think the jjk manga has had a single funny moment for at minimum a hundred or so chapters, as the funny parts of JJK literally don't exist post shibuya (the tradeoff being writing quality, lmao)

Whenever the character start “teaching” with “cliche good moral sentences” and talk into the camera, that will always be corny to me.
Show it, don’t speak it. There’s too many monologue moment with no display to back up the words being said.
86 also has this problem. Barely a couple of ep into the series, but the character already said “yeah we know racism is bad, you and I are really just the same”. While it takes AOT 60+ eps before coming to that conclusion.

Honestly, I don't mind a lack of subtlety, as I think it's pretty overrated. Can it be effective? Sure, especially in very dramatic fiction, but it is not the only way. The problem with Subtlety is that it means that a message might not get across very well as shown with AOT, and although it can feel preachy, it gets the message across more effectively.

I think it makes sense to see this as an issue with shows like 86 that are trying to come off as a grounded war drama, but Mob is a coming of age story. The show uses these direct messages during key teaching moments for Mob and adults in arrested development. It's told directly to the audience because the characters themselves are trying to guide others who desperately need it, most often Reigen to Mob (a developing young boy).
The series also implements the same themes in all of its characters in really interesting ways. Combined with the scenerios and character relationships allowing these moments to make sense, you have hard hitting, well earned moments, even if they're really direct.
You can have very direct messaging as long as the writing around it holds up, and it does hold up with Mob Psycho.
      imo anyway

    • @phthaloboy5558
      @phthaloboy5558 3 місяці тому

@@thomasffrench3639 I disagree, and I don't think that line is a particularly good example of subtlety at all. It's just layered dialogue dependant on context. The fact that some people might not 'get it' doesn't take away from the art of subtlety. For me, immersion is key, and being preachy does a lot more to undermine the message than it does good in allowing 'everybody' to get it. A line encapsulating the message doesn't mean anything on its own, it has to be earned. And it isn't more effective either IMO. Something that's able to communicate its message implicitly is much more powerful than explicitly stating it. As always there isn't a correct answer but subtlety is a better fit 9/10 times, and often just a consequence of good writing in my opinion.

In my personal opinion Mob Psycho is almost perfect. The only thing I would point to as a flaw is the final Dimple-return. It felt cheap.
Aside from that I would not change a single thing. There's a reason why the show is in my top 10 of all time, only behind a few arguably perfect shows like Hunter x Hunter, Vinland, AoT or Re:Zero.
I agree that Mob doesn't really do anything particularly special and unique in terms of character-writing but it doesn't have to because it does bring it's message across masterfully.
It also has one of the most fitting conclusions in all of anime.

I felt like I was watching Bob's Burgers or some other cartoon network show with how the characters looked. Also, a lot of the color palettes and settings felt very dull / washed out to me, which I don't necessarily enjoy. As for the story, I remember liking it as a whole but I was getting kind of bored near the end. Overall, It was a fun watch, but it's definitely not one of my favorites.

I hated the third season of this show, it wasn't even a shadow of it's former self especially in the animation department. The first season was sooo much fun and such a banger with absolutely godlike animation and in the third one it feels like they were trying too hard to give the show some kind of story and meaningful character moments so it could end and it was very boring and lame IMO, biggest disappointment was ofc the animation.

Scissor Seven is another show which kinda follows same principles only to some extent. But 90% of the time it's just gag humour only 10% of it is somewhat serious.

Read josei mamga if you want to see a proper relatable coming of age story.
Shonen and seinen coming of age very surface level & pretentious where characters dont feel real.
For coming of age you need to feel the characters are real.

6:56 Again, Reigen was manipulated at that time, which is why he's preaching some bullsh** at that time. Even AOT Fate does its preaching about the things; many shows do this, having a message to tell.

I didn't finish the show at first. I dropped after watching 6 episodes. Then I finished the show after sometime with my cousin when at vacation. It was good but nothing really special. While watching Mob Psycho I always felt like I was watching One Punch Man but the character are more emotional. I enjoyed season 2 thoroughly tho. Mainly because od Mogami arc. There are shows I watched that made me feel empty and made me think about it for weeks after watching them. But Mob Psycho isn't one of them

I think the reason why I liked mob psychos comedy so much was because I watched the German dub. I don't know all the differences, but the way they included references and fourth wall breaks was just so good. The voice-acting was also amazing. I also think that Mashle tries a bit too hard to be one-punch man. While it did make me laugh many times, it quickly felt a bit tiring. Just my opinion, though.

@just4funn978 mashle is funny because it's not trying to be serious. it has a formula and commits to it. it knows what it is....and that's what your gonna get. yes, his reactions are predictable but that's why it's funny cause you know it's coming and you know the other characters are going to be like wtf? lol
one punch man give you both worlds. when Saitama is on screen it's going to be goofy...when he's not...it's going to be serious. which is also good.

Great video! I never knew how to put into words why mob psycho didn't click for me, even though I can recognise it's a well written show. Agree especially on not relating to coming of age shows (in anime for me) and the overly preachy writing
