    Took that route but started at the main road two weeks before Christmas 1980. It took us 3 days. We snowshoed and cross country skied the whole road up pulling tobaggans and carrying a lot of heavy overnight gear. We spent two nights at the very last trees at the base near the mountain. The snow was quite soft and we sank down to our thighs many times on our early morning climb day. After enjoying the summit, the 3 of us came down in the dark by flashlights to camp and collapsed. It was I figure about -10 degrees at night. It was my second 14er and the other guys first!

    I love this one! When I did this last summer, there were hundreds of sheep being herded around the base of the mountain, and I saw only 2 people that day.

      Mine is Crestone Needle. Done it 3 times. It is one of my favorite hikes/climbs in Colorado. Such a beautiful area too.

    Just did this hike about a week ago! Great conditions and a perfectly sunny day. Didn’t mind the snow fields at all! Up to 17 this summer now going for all 58 in a summer!

    Sherpaman! Lets go! The camera magic makes me laugh. You can't see the stick from camera to your hand , yet it shows up clear as day as a shadow on the snow.

    An interesting and rarely done way is from owl creek up to the pass between Matterhorn and Uncompagre and circle around to finish onone of the regular routes . You go by some spectacular and very rotten walls .

    Every once in a while someone rams an airplane into uncomphedgre. They had a pilot ram it with an A-10 II and it has been rammed with a variety of light aircraft and turboprops the suicide peak.

    Great video! Im planning on doing this hike later this month. What is the camping situation along nellie creek road? Are there dispersed sites or are you just primitive camping off the road?

    Then I am not the only one who walks uphill and uses the snowboard for the downhill. Hay what is the thing called its basically a cane with a point on the end to wedge between rocks to get stability. Its not a climbing ax or treking pole and I snapped the one I had in wyoming.

    You would think blanca or pike would be the mountain of choice to fly into by someone with an airplane wanting to commit suicide. You have several big cities that can be reached within an hour of pike and blanca. Lubbock, Oklahoma City, Wichita, Amarillo, Denver, Colorado Springs

    I hear marmots and porcupines are an issue in that area for vehicles. Do you do anything to prevent them from eating your cars wires?

    • @TheVirtualsherpa
      @TheVirtualsherpa  Рік тому +1

      Feel that those handful of stories of when it happens (in the San Juan’s or other ranges) are more the anomaly Vs what usually happens. If you are looking to play it safe, I’ve heard people using chicken wire on the bottom of their vehicles. Having said that, I’ve left a number of different cars overnight in many different areas down here and have never had a problem.
