Yep I do not care what folks may say, precisely played hard rock guitar through a full up Marshall amp, began with Clapton and Cream . Even with the rise of Hendrix, Eric stood alone. More well organized, precisely played soloing seems to squash all things Hendrix, to me. Its like eating a gourmet dinner. Eric did it first, and did it best. No wonder he was Edward Van's #1 influence.

There are so many factors to nailing that Beano record tone that it would be pretty close to impossible to do without them all. Clapton's predilection for playing loud would have been a huge factor in this equation. That Marshall cranked most of the way up would have pushed those KT66 power tubes into major saturation and those speakers cones would have been on the brink as well. 1960's strings were also quite different than most modern day strings and that too would have contributed to the overall tone. So, nailing that elusive tone will probably remain elusive. In years to come people will be doing the forensics on the Chris Buck sound trying to recreate that, no doubt. When in reality we already know that most of that lives in the hands and the soul of a great artist. Play on Chris, you are inspiring us all with your incredible fret work.

Great playing as usual, Chris. I think you've pretty much nailed that sound. There's a lot of early Freddy King in there, too. In the '50s Freddy used a Les Paul into a Bassman, and got some pretty serious overdrive with that combination. I don't think Clapton's choice of Les Paul and Marshall is any coincidence, considering the amount of Freddy on that album.

I dare to cite a guy, who wrote 2009 in a forum named "The Gear Page", that he knew the producer Mike Vernon in the early 70ies:
"Well it wasn't at the Beano session but I was in the studio with Mike about 1971 (same room as Beano was recorded in though, at Decca's Broadhurst Gardens).
He set up a Marshall SLP to record flat out but with just one 100 watt 4x12 - so the speakers were being pushed.
The cabinet was set in the corner of the room but tilted in order that it faced the diagonal corner (at the ceiling juncture). He then set up a mic on a long boom pointing into the corner about six inches from the apex (so it is right into the corner). About six foot away (maybe less, I'm not so sure on this) from the speaker cab was another mic aimed at it. Either side of the cab were those moveable baffles about 8 foot high where the lower half is absorbant but the top half is glass - I think you can see these in the Beano session pics.
Now in the room itself the sound was very loud! Through the monitors in the control room - it was like a typical "Fresh Cream" lead sound, i.e. extremely beautiful like the "Spoonful" solo off that record. Personally I think the "corner loading" of the main mic was critical (and I don't remember the mic, sorry). I just wanted to add that they would spend more time on mic placement than just about everything else!
I'm trying to retain my memory of these things!
    Best, Pete."

Unfortunately, a compressed youtube file is not even close to "real world" accurate. Without the volume, the KT66s or the critical tone-shaping "Bluesbreaker" grill cloth, you will never get the authentic breakup, upper-midrange aggression or singing feedback characteristics that define "Bluesbreaker" tone. Seek out a proper vintage-spec 1962 amp and you will get so much closer.

"Clapton or not" I don't think that's a statement that you can make with certainty. Clapton came along at just the right time and created a sound with his specific style of playing that redefined rock music forever. If rock had marched onward for several more years without Clapton's Marshall/Gibson combo, and had continued to evolve without that influence, it's not certain that other players would have responded the same to hearing it as they did when Clapton did it. Everybody wanted that sound at that time specifically because of the Beano album. Like it or not, Clapton is the one who changed the game, and he deserves the credit for doing so.

Can we just take a moment of silence for that poor Les Paul he just man handled like a small farm animal?? Jeez. Incredible tone Chris. That's that "Beano" tone spot on.

Amazing as always! I was stoked to see a Hello Sailor Effects Rangemaster clone. HSE makes the coolest custom pedals IMO, and I've been jonesing for one of those Rangemasters a long while.
    Keep up the great content!

Well blues and rock ain't gonna die if these young lads keep it alive which they are doing a fine job at. I could live with that tone for the rest of my life, can't beat an old marshall sound through an old les paul.

    Awesome playing wow!
British people always give Eric Clapton Way too much credit. He stole all those riffs and licks from Freddy King, who is from Texas by the way.
“Let's Hide Away and Dance Away with Freddy King”. Gibson Les Paul and Fender Super.

Strange given technological advencements that 18th century Cremona violins (Stradivari, Amati, Guaneri) are still irreplaceable and worth millions. Similarly, 'old' technology (hand wound pick ups and valve amps) may have the same status. I suspect that in 300 years hence '59 Les Pauls will be locked in bank vaults.

Strange, different ears etc to me I hear a closer tone with the range master on as soon as you engaged it that fluty tone was Beano to my ears.
Clapton always used middle postie most of us ignore he is the same on Strat using middle pickup often in clips I've watched.
    Great video.
Ps. Did you manage to just put the guitar in the case and nonchalantly walk off with it? 😉

Congratulations Chris Buck / Cardinal Black on the #5 Top Solo of 2021! Chris Buck,...the fiddle master who's right hand technique stands far and above most guitarists left hand technique!
