Absolutely exquisite! No wonder Lucas now has a contract with Sony and the other "winners" don't. This piece should also have a breathtaking arrangement by Volodos, hopefully someday.
When this young genius plays a "proper" Steinway & Sons piano his true talent emerges. His sense of the music is without peers. I've listened to so many of his interpretations and I'm not disappointed with them....sometimes the piano is the problem.
There’s an interesting story behind the solo piano video presented above. The French pianist in the video, Lucas Debargue, was awarded fourth place by the judges in the 15th International Tchaikovsky Competition. Of six finalists, there was one gold, a joint silver, a joint bronze, and fourth place. Yet his performance was widely acclaimed.
It's a little too bad that Medici TV (probably) has copped in this "naked" version, both the so important initial triple silence of the artist, and the warm applause and flower rewards of the Russian public after they heard this. Please, please... could you kindly add them back ?
+Lin Zhu Thank you for this link, relating however to another performance of the same piece, during the first round, where it seems he played it with more perfect technique, but I find the atmospheres were different for this "Valse Sentimentale" during the winners' concert : (a) spellbinding atmosphere : the overall concentration and sensitiveness were even deeper, this pianist can really create moments of grace (even despite little technical mistakes), it was more the case in this winners' concert, for this piece of music, than during the first round (b) warmer atmosphere : in this winners' concert, the public already knew him better and gave him a VERY warm applause both before and after he played : these two warm moments are missing in the "cropped" version posted here by Medici.TV who just wanted to treat all candidates the same way; the applause and flower rewards were clearly warmer for this young pianist )
I spent years dreaming to hear a piano version like this
I've never heard this played with such introspection and passion as this man does. Kudos, Maestro!
You're my winner Lucas Debargue! A very good sound!
Very profound and poetic performance, wonderful!
what a masterpiece!
I agree
..nous sommes transportés par cette valse
Yes, that is Mischa Maisky and I imagine he was as touched by this beautiful interpretation as we are!; Congratulations Lucas!!❤️
This entered directly into my soul ✨
Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for this delight to my ears, and for many other viewers who come across your videos!
Couldn't be more exquisite. The perfect encore!

What the musical performance!
I hope this genius finds the works of Alexander Scriabin. That would be a meeting of two geniuses !
I love this performance!

Such pathos! Thank you monsieur!

Can you imagine that there were many empty seats in the balcony and the orchestra. I would love to have been there.
Quelle pureté
most romantic ever...horowitz level
bashkirov was there

❤
The best, I do not understand why Masleev won the first prize.

Valse sentmentale
+No no "Valse sentimentale"
merci
merci
Donohoe sleeps again through Debargue's performance :( Sad:(
Klara Frei ears hear the music.
Is Peter Donohoe sleeping or just enjoying the music with closed eyes?
2:28 WAT
Blasphemous..
What's the problem? The guy isn't sleeping, just closing the eyes, those are brakes when listening to great music
That's Peter Donohoe , a jury member. He's a great pianist himself. He's clearly not sleeping. His concentration is admirable.
Sounds very chopin
Very sad music ..
et sa bouche "parle" indicible !
Too slowly he plays.
Alright Yoda.
This pianist has such a bad taste-it's insult to hear such rendition, no clue of Tchaikovsky style.
vile - such clumsy rubato and a left hand that, well..? - no understanding of the music.........truly horrible and "harsh"
