A brief Jimmy Page aircheck from 1988. Jimmy was the 7P-Midnight personality on Q106.5 and may have been one of the best nighttime jocks I've ever heard.
Jimmy Paige "The Nighttime Rage" was an enormous influence on me. When I hit the airwaves as Rikk Idol on HOT 97 in 1991 this was the man I wanted to emulate. He later came over to HOT and was beyond generous with his words of wisdom. Not only that, he let me hang in the studio with him and watch him work his magic. No one could hit a post, incorporate phones and drops they way Jimmy did. He WAS Top 40 radio. RIP Paige. You'll always be the king to me.
I remember you came to my mass comm class at Meramec back in 1991 to speak to us about the business. I think you knew the teacher of the class though I don't remember her name. I lasted three weeks in that class. I majored more in sleeping and hanging out at the Student center than classes my freshman year 😳
I wish there was some unscoped 80's airchecks from St. Louis radio. I listened to some KHTR & Magic 108 way over in Illinois located between Peoria & Springfield & would like to hear some clear airchecks.
I grew up in southern Illinois and St. Louis radio came in with a good antenna. I had tons of KHTR and Q106.5 airchecks (and from other stations nationwide from vacations) on cassette from my Jr. High and early H.S days before I knew what an aircheck was. I threw all of the tapes away years ago thinking that I would never listen to them again. After seeing all the KHTR and Jimmy Paige airchecks, I wish I would have kept them.
There is no way this is from 1988. "Everlasting Love" and "Like A Prayer" were released in late winter 1989. What is clear is that WKBQ easily destroyed KHTR, which went oldies by the end of 1988. WKBQ wouldn't survive the grunge, MC Hammer and boy bands at 106.5, however, and in early 1994 went to 104.1. On a national level, St. Louis was never a big Top 40 market -- and still isn't. Overshadowed by Chicago, Q and KHTR aren't remembered nationally but did have their respective top status for years alongside Magic 108.
Q 106.5 got a signal upgrade in June of 1989. Prior to that, that station was difficult to receive 45 miles away. I remember when I tuned to that station after a signal increase, and the reception was crystal clear out in Union, Missouri.

@@johnwalker571 I know this is three years old, but was the teacher Carol Owens?
@@rbecker380 I didn't have Carol for Mass Comm but I did have her for the broadcast communications class
@@johnwalker571 There's a distinct possibility you and I were in the same class(es).
@@rbecker380 what year did you attend class there?
Damn I love it, makes me feel like I traveled back in time, wish to have more recordings of the old radio stations :)

Had that bumper sticker on my boombox.
Where did Jimmy Paige go after Hot 97?
This Looks Like WKBQ Is A Format Of A Mix Top-40 And Hot AC.
Hot AC is Top 40 for a slightly older demo. WKBQ played lots of rock unlike other CHR/Top 40 in its day.
