It's very difficult to perform an apparenly easy piece in the manner as it should be. The pianist responded to the task excellently with her perfect technique and innate lyricism. Simply beautiful!

From the notes: "Speed is of essential importance ... Czerny conceived of the etudes as being played no slower than allegro molto or presto; one is even marked presto volante. The etudes are only pianistically duill when they are plodded through, and only musically dull when they are played with no melodic imagination or dynamic variety. Only then does Czerny become the enemy of the pianist and an intense bore!" :)

Thanks for your quick reply! Perfect explanation of the character of this masterpiece and the intent of its composer!

Please send a link to Wim Winters! Of course then he will reply: "but you see I'm right, she's still playing them slower than the metronome indiciations".

Thanks for your caveat. But I don't think the metronome indications are the sole criteria for the speed of playing piano. I think there are several other factors such as rhythm processing, dynamic articulation, emotive evocation, etc.

Of course - that's why I tend to ridiculize Winter's "musicological" ideas. Even if this lady here plays them not quite in the rather impossible metronome indications, the Etudes sound infinitely better in her tempo than in the "double-beat" pedestrian plodding that he advocates.

Highly developed music in a harmonic and melodic sense and its structure.
It's a must for every pianist! Thank you, david!

Wonderful! Is there your own transfer from LP? I know there was one from Russia and the turntable must have been faulty as it played too slowly and below pitch.

I wonder if she knew my two teachers in the Buffalo, New York area ... Professors Anne Moot and Frina Arshanskaya Boldt. They never mentioned her.
She was incredible! ... and as I understand she was a third generation Czerny student. Who would know his pieces better?
Thank you for the share and the New York memories.
