    Mike
    Great information. With a belt drive on your Panhead how did you deal with the blow by that would normally be going in the primary area?

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  4 роки тому +1

      That's not "blow by," that tube sticking out of the left side of your motor is the breather. Turn off the primary chain oiler at the oil pump. Now modify the breather tube fitting to accept 3/8" neoprene oil line, and you're done. We cover this in earlier videos dealing with belt drives on early primaries. Go to our main channel page and click on videos. They should all come up.

    would the deflection of 3/4 to 1" be the same for a shovelhead? Thanks, Love your videos

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  2 роки тому

      Probably about right. What brand? Is it an old rubber belt, or Kevlar? Best to always go by the manufacturer's specifications. That would be the manufacturer of your belt drive.

    Hey Mike! You are awesome Man! Keep these video's coming you your Pan! I just purchased a crusty old barnfind 1959 FL that's all HD. So I have started going through this by rebuilding the Linkert M74B. I pulled the primary cover off as there was a bit of oil leaking out of that area when she would run. I wasn't sure if it was the chain oiler or a seal. I checked the oiler adjustment screw and it was at the factory setting. Looks like I may have a seal leak. My question is, when you convert to the belt drive on your primary, do you run the chain oiler screw all the way in, or plug the circuit? It looks like it's connected to the breather circuit, so I don't want to mess something up. Take good care and keep these video's coming on the old stuff!

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  4 роки тому +1

      Thank You. Okay. These are questions repeated over and over. The primary chain is oiled by the breather pipe coming out of the engine and routed to the primary chain. Oil does not return on these old systems. It is a "total loss" system and drips it's oil out of the lower rear corner of the primary cover onto the ground. Nothing is wrong here, just "undesireable by today's standards." First, a belt drive primary is the answer. Next, trim the end of the breather pipe so you can run a hose from it, behind the inner primary cover to the rear of the motorcycle. Turn off the chain oiler at the oil pump screw. Now, install a fresh seal on the engine "output" or "sprocket shaft" and install a belt drive. You'll love it. It's a lot of work, but well worth it. Today's belt drives are great quality and smooth and dependable if installed properly. If you're going to gear the bike up a little, now's the time to install a larger trans sprocket. There are videos on our UA-cam channel about everything you're doing. Have fun. And, stay healthy.

    • @vintageflyingservice826
      @vintageflyingservice826 4 роки тому

      @@pacificmike9501 Thanks Mike! Sorry for the repeated questions. This is my first Harley so zero knowledge base. I'll look into the videos for more details. I did watch your video on gearing the bike up. The trans sprocket is output sprocket from the trans to rear wheel? And you recommend a 24 or 25 tooth sprocket. Just wanted to be clear on that. Later Mike!

    • @pacificmike9501

    Mike, I have a question about neglected bikes. As I told you before, I bought an 05 Dyna Super Glide with 2500 miles. I was psyched because I knew the owner, this bike was never abused. But, I’m starting to think it was neglected , for no other reason than the owner didn’t ride it. I took it to the local HD dealer who went through the bike, changed the oils and charged me a whopping $700.
    A few weeks later I see a video about the life span of tired. Mine has the original, 15 years old. So I correct that. Never thought about a 15 year old battery. Got stranded today, and said “ Why didn’t I change a 15 year old original battery?” . Neglect is expensive, but this bike is like the day it came out of the showroom. You probably would have caught this shit. I took it to the dealer and a performance shop that I dealt with for years. Is it just me, or is it common to find a low mileage bike with these issues. I’m thinking common sense says to change the oils, inspect the brakes, check the battery if it’s even worth it on a 15 year old bike. It cost me more than a battery to get it home today. I’m not a mechanic but I’m having trouble understanding how the dealer and performance sho didn’t catch it. Of course it started like a beast, till it didn’t. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  4 роки тому

      Okay, I strongly doubt the battery was 15 years old. But, the bike wasn't used a lot. I have no idea what the dealer did for $700.00. But, here we are now. After a bike or any engine has been sitting a long time and is put back in use, I normally do the same things to all of them. I change the fluids and check and adjust everything. All controls should be lubed including cables. All rubber parts, especially hoses and motor mounts should be expected for rot and replaced where needed. Same for tires. Now, ride it. After a few hundred miles, and I mean right away. Then, change the fluids again. Now, you've cleaned it out. This stuff is not hard to figure, it just needs clean up and attention to detail. Don't get discouraged. It will freshen up, but itwon't do it on its own.

    • @LonesomeNomad137
      @LonesomeNomad137 4 роки тому

      Believe it or not, it’s the original battery that came with the bike. The previous owner verified it yesterday. I put it on a HD battery tender and it’s firing up. I have an appointment later in the week to bring it in. I’ll talk to the mechanic. Are you suggesting to change all the fluids or just oil ? Thanks for tolerating these rookie problems.

    • @LonesomeNomad137
      @LonesomeNomad137 4 роки тому

      Changed the battery it fired right up. Went a couple miles got gas and came back home. The bike won’t fire up. The battery sounds okay. The fuel injection kicks on the bike sounds like it wants to start initially, but then seems like it’s not getting fuel. I wondered if it was something with the security system, or deeper problems. I love my baby, not very happy with her actions lately. 😁😁
