Just discovered these videos. Outstanding tutorial. Being a small engine and equipment repair person, I get a lot of these that I have to send out to repair. This will eliminate that. Keep up the brilliant work.
By far, best hydro gear video. I appreciate the layman’s explanation as well as explaining everything in how it operates. I have some confidence now, to fix one or both of my hydro gear - leaks
Definitely the best video out there on hydro gears. Thank you for taking the time to go over every little detail and what can go wrong and what to look for.
Fantastic video! I can handle this kind of repair, but before now, I couldn't find any info on how to setvice these units. I also can't locate a service manual for my mower, which makes things worse. Thank you for sharing your knowledge by making this straightforward, easy to follow, no bullsh!t video. I'm now a subscriber.
Thanks for showing me how you take one apart, appreciate your time, your effort, and I'm glad someone like you takes the time to show other people what you can do to save money and cost. S and that's a lot of talk about these days. Thank you very much
Hyd system requires clean and you can’t be too clean or too careful Prepare the work area and dust free is a must and hands must stay clean so clean often 😊😊😊
Slightly late to viewing this video.., but it is excellently produced on all levels (video, audio, oral descriptions, in depth descriptions of and demonstrations)… Thank you sir.
great vid as I just had one that crapped out. or the wheel motor did, nice to see these are fixable as long as it wasn't a catastropic failure. seeing a new pump is 500-600
They are certainly fixable for the most part as long as you catch the problem early and finding the parts can be a little bit challenging but they are out there sometimes you may have to get different parts from different suppliers as I have not seen a complete rebuild kit completely from one supply yet usually just different parts from different people but they are rebuildable and if you don't need a whole lot of parts it can definitely save you a lot of money by fixing it yourself they are not rocket science when you take them apart they are actually very simple as long as you remember how you took it apart and how it goes back together
Great video Rob! Very useful information, thank you for the step by step. I am having trouble with the same pump and will be using your advice to fix it! Look forward to your future vids!
Very informative! I’m having trouble with left pump on my ferris z1 stand on mower. I will be checking into it in the morning!!! Thank you, I will keep you updated with my findings!
Awesome tutorial video showing every detail and potential problems. Certainly will help me if I ever have to rebuild one of these hydro gears. I have three zero turn mowers and use them quite heavy during the warm mowing months. Thanks.
Thanks for the video! I got a leak on my pump from around the casing I replaced the o-ring gasket that goes around the caseing but it's still leaking. Was i supposed to use some type of sealant or loctite when I put it back together. Thx
The left ZT 2800 on my old Gravely recently started becoming much slower than the right one. If I bleed the left side (like when ya change the filter..but without changing the filter) it'll run at normal speed for an hour or two...and then require bleeding again. Any ideas before I tear it apart- or what to look for when I do tear it apart? Thanks for this vid! Best one I've found!
You are amazing my friend. I do have a question I took mine apart and put it all back together. When I went to engage it my left tire at first did a little movement but then it stopped moving the right wheel moves perfectly. Could this be due to putting the hoses on backwards or do I need to take it back off again and look at everything. As now the left wheel wont engage I had to add all new hydro oil due to the reservoir emptying out once I take the charge cap off.
Like the video. I have a zero turn and when idling it is making somewhat of a “clanking” sound (hard to describe). It sounds like my left hydro-gear pump and when I feel the pumps with my hand, it also feels like something might be going on inside. Curious if you have ever run across a noisy pump? Mower moves around fine, no leaking and everything seems okay otherwise. I’m not positive it’s the pump because with the motor running and belt turning there’s a lot of noise so I don’t want to just tear into it.
I have a Scag Tiger Cat and the left pump is leaking hydraulic fluid and now there is no pressure to allow movement....was going to buy new pump but after watching your video,I have to see the inside to see what was wrong
Thanks, Rob really informative explanation on the pump. I have a question concerning a Toro diesel 72 inch in-line Hydro pump broke pump belt yesterday. Today I repaired it and replace idler crank the mower pushed handles forward start moving nice and easy. Everything sounds good. I shove my hand forward and kill the motor started up pushed handles. Folded moves slowly try to go fast and it shut it down again. It ran three minutes. The pumps are hotto the touch? This thing was perfect until yesterday. There are a lot of hydraulic lines underneath. Do you think one might have collapsed or it’s a problem? I took my filter off today. Cut it open no metal inside.
Hi Rob. Your video has been invaluable to me. I am reassembling my pump now. I noticed there is what appears to be an alignment arrow on the bottom of the cylinder block. Is it supposed to go on the shaft a certain way? Thanks!
I bought a used Husqvarna ZTR mower with hydro gear 3400’s. They are really loud. Kinda sounds like a car with no power steering fluid. They work fine they’re just noisy. Fluid is full and all.
Just liked and subscribed, great video, appreciate you making it. Have a 2004-5 Wright Stander with leaky pumps, might try for a reseal, the pumps are about $550 each. Thanks
I would also check the adjustment on the control arm that is attached to the hydrop pump. They are adjustable. Also at the end of that control alarm there's a set pin that holds the Lever on the shaft of the hydro pump sometimes That can come loose And the lever might not be grabbing the shaft properly to give you the full distance throw of the handle.
I am having pump issues with my hydro gear brand pumps after low oil. I changed the oil and replaced a bad line. Now the wheels won’t move, and the mower will free roll even with bypass closed. I tried all the bleeding methods and have had no luck. Do these need to be pre filled after an oil change ?
Excellent video. Very clear! My Bad Boy with this type pump acts as though there is backlash. There is no backlash in my linkage at all, but to stop the wheel, the pump lever has to return to a different place when coming from forward versus coming from reverse. It creeps one way or the other in what should be the neutral position. Is that normal for these type pumps? I may disassemble to see if I can find an issue. (Thanks to your video!)
One thing you can do is take the Linkage arm itself off. Then Jack up your machine be very careful doing this. Try to move the lever yourself forward and reverse. You might find out that you are actually able to push the lever farther than when the linkage was connected. If that is the case then you definitely have to adjust the linkage Or the lever on the shaft itself. If you remember in my video there's a cradle at the bottom of the pump sounds to me like the cradle is not being depressed completely when going in. Therefore it's not going to build the proper pressure.
You can also do this method by adjusting the handle itself so that you're able to pull the handle farther backwards. Depending on your machine these handles will stop at a certain spot but if you loosen the bolts on the handle and push it forward a little more and then tighten it you'll be able to pull back farther if that makes any sense. If you're still not having any luck after that I would suggest doing a complete tear down and see what's going on inside
@@youtubestar I guess you mean I'll be able to pull it back farther before the arms drop into the neutral slots. I didn't fully explain, but I have automated my mower and completely removed the arms. I have servos moving the pump levers. I have videos on my channel of my mower adventures. My original mower, which has a nice deadband at neutral, had the combo transaxles, but the latest one has the separate pump and motor. I'll pop the top on the pumps and see what I can see. Thank you for responding!
The first step I take in operating the mower after installing the automation is to put it on jackstands and adjust linkages and parameters in the firmware so that neutral on my controls is dead center of the deadband of the mower drive system. What I found with this mower is that I could not find such a spot. The mower only has 400 hours on it, but is a 2014 model. Thank you for your detailed attempt at helping.
I need a new shaft can you help. The fan I caused to brake then I tried to remove the nut holding the fan to the shaft, I didn’t see until I looked at the broken nut that it was stamped on both sides to prevent it from loosening. Your suggestions please, and thank you. My name is Ed.
It appears 90% of the disassembly can take place while the pump is still installed in the mower..... Is there a reason the pump has to be removed? (Wright Sentar)
About to tear into the hydro on a Swisher ZMAX. Is there a place to but Swisher htdro parts? I haven't been able to find any online since it's an older zero turn mower.
Like and subbed. Great information. My toro grandstand loses function on right ride after mowing for about 30 minutes. Works fine again after waiting an hour but eventually loses it again. Hopefully following this video will show me something. Maybe someone has experienced it before and can help. Thanks
A couple things you can check. Number one check to see if all the fan blades are on that pump on the right side. If they are missing blades when the pump gets hot it can lose pressure And then when it cools down it will run good again.. Also you might have bad seals in your pump. The seals are rubber and when they get hot they expand and if you have bad seals the pump will not build as much pressure when they warm up.
@@youtubestar No fans on these pumps I'm pretty sure, older model. Just frothing in reservoir is the only thing i noticed and sometimes a leak forms at wheel motor hose connection. Was guessing pressure/heat issue since it works fine after cooling down. Maybe bad oil. Will break down the pump and this week check seals. Thanks for the quick response!
Actually one of the best tutorials I’ve ever seen how every little step is detailed chefs kiss👏👏👏

This video made me feel a lot better on hydro gears. I thought they would be a lot more complicated than this.
Wow that pump is really simple! Never seen the inside of one. Great job!
A great video, I’ve learned a lot about these Hydro’s. Thank you for your time.

Hmmm. Usually when a pump gets hot like that it is some type of blockage in the fluid or really contsminsted fluid.

Which nut/bolt do you slightly loosen to purge air out of once reassembled?
Can I remove the cylinder and pistons without removing the entire hydro gear from my mower?
How and or where do you order parts for these if needed? How do you find the part numbers? Do you have a website to find them?
Is the charge pump timmed ?

Dixie Chopper 200079 PUMP-HYDRO. WHITE LEFT TDS 10 , when I go up a hill the left side will jump like it has air in it ??
Did you fix it mine is doing the same thing.
Did you check the belt tension on that side? And make sure the idler pulley is not hitting the frame. That is a known problem with those units.
@@youtubestar It has 1 belt for the Tbox its not on the frame. It well do it when it is hot . Thanks for your help joe
