Very encouraging that you took 3 months to get through Matt's course. With all the UA-cam etc., content now days, it can be hard to focus on one song or class and don't move on until you have completely exhausted the material. Guess I need to get back to "Blues Speak" 🙂Thanks for the vid!!
Nicely done. In addition to #5, his pick tendencies, his syncopation in and out of the beat creates a pulse that is just indecently alluring. I appreciate all of the hard work you put in before and during this video. Thank you!
@@kckguitar4166 I was sort of thinking it looked like you but I wasn't 100%. Then when you soloed Saturday night, you definitely had so many of Matt's licks nailed. Great job! I recorded most of the acts on Saturday night. Didn't you do Everyday I have the blues? If I have it, I'll send it.
A seriously great summary of Matt's teachings. I worked my way through 'playing the changes'. And yeah, I agree. The stuff that stuck most was playing in 4th and 5th position, those typical pentatonic pull-offs that become plectrum picked notes instead and major thinking, instead of minor. Plus, indeed playing the changes, so that the scale you use, corresponds to the chord you are currently hearing. Anyway, very well put here. Thanks
To make it a bit easy peasy: 1. Shifting minor to major tonal center 4:33 2. Gravity center 5:58 3. Cool licks 7:50 4. More comfort in IV. and V. position 9:19 5. New picking habits 10:35 I like to work with this video as an explanation! I discovered Matt S. playing only a few days ago and I.m soo much affected by his playing. Every real blues player should study that instead of boring repeats and endless noodling the minor pents of always the some things before. Thx Kevin for your help, KR Henry 😎
Thank you, thank you! I’ve been combing UA-cam for about two weeks trying to find a particular person that I’ve seen do guitar lesson ads and I liked his style but forgot which site he was advertising. As I’m watching your video, FINALLY and ironically Matt Schofields add for True Fire came on and it was the very add/person I’ve been waiting to pop up…..FINALLY and I hate advertisements ❤😂
My man ...I've been obsessing over Matt's playing for years. I started that Truefire course a while back, and to be honest ...I haven't had a chance to get back to it. I've actually spent a lot of time looking at some performances of Matt's ...and demoes when he played some noodling stuff, and I've been learning his style from those videos. But, after your video, I'm really gonna have to go back to the course, haha ...Matt really is such a talented player, and his style is so out there and melodic! Thanks for this!
@um420 As I did understand, "out there" maybe can be described as "more colour" or "new tonal space"? I.m not sure, this are my words. E.g. adding the 6th of a maj. scale added (f# in A) and not coming home under mamas porch every second (a in A). Even the worst and helpless habits: Ending on the flat 7th, OMG! Are we driving Ford T-model today?? Shifting from c to c# in the same lick... upwards c#, downwords c etc. Building up tension and releave... using rests to let ring the string, not myriards of high speed acrobatic scales... maybe it.s that? KR Henry
I got the Blues Speak "Playing the Changes" course and just started that a few days ago. I assume you got the Blues Speak lesson without the additional title like the one I mentioned. I'll likely get that course as well. He's got 8 separate courses on Truefire right now. Appreciate your insight that you provided in your video! Gives me an idea what to expect, even if it's a different course. Thanks much.
Hey EW, thanks for watching! Yeah, this video is about the original Blues Speak course. I have also gone through Playing the Changes, another great course but ultimately it's covering the same stuff - Matt's approach to improvisation.
I am very interested in this video but the audio in the main shot makes it hard to watch. I really like the rest of the video so keep up the great work. Maybe you’ve already resolved this issue. Great playing
I think one should go into a course like this with prerequisites. Pentatonic scale is the key. While it's not the predominant tonality, it is still the predominant fingering for both major and minor phrasing and major blues is a hybrid of both in that you want major 3rds and major 6ths, as well as a lowered 7th. On top of that you want to know your dominant arpeggios all over the neck. When those are in place you can squeeze a lot more out of a course like this rather than just learning phrases and not realizing why they work.
Thanks for watching! I’m playing through Native Instruments Guitar Rig 6 for most of this video. For the performance part, I’m straight into a Fender Hot Rod Deville at bedroom levels.
This video is about applying lessons learned from Matt Schofield's playing. Given the form of the blues, the opportunities for application are consistently recurring. I appreciate your viewership, Simp, but I might suggest a rewatch here to pick up on some of the finer points...
Hey, thanks! Appreciate the sub! As for the strings, haha, my old guitar teacher used to coil 'em up this way and I always kinda liked the way it looked so I've been going with it for years.
Dude. After looking at your channel, I’ll say you deserve so many more views. Please keep it coming bro!
Appreciate that, man. It’s been awhile but I’ll get back to it.
@matt: True words, some for me!!!

Matt is amazing! I just took a four day in-person workshop in South Florida with Matt, David Grissom and Gary Hoey and it was so over the top!
The guy in this video must have looked pretty familiar then!!

You really get the dynamics & nuances of Matt’s playing. Guess I need to get that course! Well done & thank you!!

Thoughtful takeaways. Thanks
Awesome video! You will help many of us with it! Chris Cain is another awesome blues guitarist that comes to mind when discussing this topic! Thanks!
Great video brother and playing. Subbed!
🤟🤟🤟
I own this course but have not started it. But this was great inspiration! Thank you!
That's great to hear! Matt's playing is wonderful, and the more people who are able to take something away from it, the better.
Thx, very nice and useful information
My pleasure, Özkan!

Hm, I'm not sure about that one! You can always look up Matt Schofield under artists and find it that way!
Never heard of this guy. Going to check him out. Jump swing jazz blues. Sounds like Hollywood Fats.
Thanks for watching, Robert. I'm jealous that you'll get to listen to Matt for the first time! Discovering him changed the way I play guitar forver!
