    That high contrast look and dynamic range issue is exactly why bracketing for HDR editing was such a big deal in the early 2000s. Also definitely agree about viewfinders, I still own both types but I only shoot mirrorless for jobs where I absolutely need the AF performance to pump up my keeper rate. For personal projects and slower shoots it's OVF and (D)SLR all the way.

    The gap in time between the 5D launch and today (2024) is the same as the gap between its launch and 1986. 1986 saw the launch of the Canon RC 701 (Basically the great grandparent of DSLR cameras, although it used videotape technology). The Canon RC 701 was outdated almost immediately (0.3Mp equivalent) but the fact that the 5D is still totally relevant today (it's still a superb camera, with colour science better than many 2024 cameras) is amazing. Canon knocked it out of the park with the 5D. They got it so right.
    I just bought an absolutely mint-perfect one for $220 US. At this price I don't understand why every photographer just doesn't buy one. I have to stop myself from buying them all. One day they will be so collectible. Grab a good one before the Hipsters hear about them.

    When I moved to digital I started with the 5D, completing a large, year long b&w project. On the positive side, the results were impressive - and some of my shots interpolated up to 3'x4' prints. Great stuff (credit the lens and sensor). On the negative side, sensor cleaning was a constant necessity (a dust magnet) and I found Canon digitals awkward and unwieldy to use. I eventually went Fuji mirrorless, but in the end, it's all about the results and images from the 5D interpolate so well that the megapixel count isn't much of a problem.

    • @danthe_cameraman

      Impressive stuff James! I have noticed that the sensor attracts so much dust 😭

    I use my 5D more than my RP nowadays, idk I just enjoy using it. I like using a 35mm 1.4 Sigma lens on it.
    I recently picked up a Fuji s2 Pro, I'm excited to get it and compare it to the 5D. I think the Fuji's Super CCD sensor will render scenes very film-like, with great DR due to the layout of the sensor. (Although the Canon 5D already does this greatly)

    Low dynamic range will force to use Canon 5D shooting like film. Usually film has dynamic range 3-5 stops and this camera force us to choose the scene similar with shooting film.

    I grew up shooting film. I got my first DSLR in 2002. Over the years I shot a mix of film and digital. I shot my last roll of 35mm film in 2019. I still have medium format and large format film cameras as well. I did my own black and white film processing and negative scanning. There are a few places left that still do color negative film processing where I live. However, I probably will never shoot another roll of film again. I do have a Fuji X-T3 and I absolutely love the film simulations. I just can't justify the cost of shooting film anymore.

    I think the high contrast issue is more due to the lens. The nifty fifty has that issue, it's there when I mount it on a mirrorless body. (And was there on the 20D as well.. I'd say equally bad issue on all three bodies.) 5Dc with a 28mm MC Beroflex is stunningly good in high contrast situations, never saw colors rendered so well despite our tropical strong light. (Can't recommend that lens though, only with supreme caution, as this M42 adapted lens' back element in infinity focus hits the mirror! - Actually, it made the mirror fall off, after taking a few absolutely stunning shots..) So, the quest of the perfect lens for the 5D continues! Nifty fifty is a nice little lens, but this body has far more potential. L glass will make a tremendous upgrade in both color quality and contrast handling....

    I have the 5D Classic, in perfect condition. I also have the Mk2 and Mk3 versions. They are lovely cameras to shoot with.

    I like your photos, so thumbs up ! But I still don't know how you achieve the film look. I recently bought a 5D mark ii because of its video features and because I wanted to know what a professional grade, full frame camera could bring to my photos, especially in low light. I agree what you say about the experience and the image quality. But there's so different film stocks, so different way to edit them, even before the digital age, that talking about the film look seems inconsistent to me. We got a 5D, great, but what do we do with it know ?

    • @danthe_cameraman
      @danthe_cameraman  Рік тому

      I have heard the mark ii sensor is different from the mark i. It's not identical to film but rather film-like, which means it has less of a digital edge and punchier colour renditions.
      You can't 100% replace film but this gets you there for a fraction of the cost.

  • @shaabaaz3083
    @shaabaaz3083 3 місяці тому

    Nice content ! My solution for inexpensive film usage is to shoot...b&w only + caffenol (since i keep it around 16 days/ 8 bobins, caffenol is a good deal compared to rodinal)
    For color, i look for specific sensor & color science from the 2000's, which keeps me away from nowadays expensive color films
    Hence the Canon 5Dc

I wanted to get one before the prices start rising for these cameras. Can already see the trend to getting old digital cameras. Haven't used it yet saving up for lens, CF card , and card reader. I've shot events with this camera and the notoriously bad at autofocus lens sigma 50mm f1.4 non art version, the results are amazing, if you can ignore the fact that 50% of images are out of focus most of the time. Great camera for a great price, could have a better autofocus though and auto iso function. You probably already know this, but in case you don't, some lenses flare a lot and that can really affect the entire picture a lot, so it isn't necessarily all the cameras fault when you have issues. That said, I know the 5D has more limits on dynamic range than modern cameras.
