  • Today, on day 45, we'll show you our two hummingbird feeders and explain how we clean them with a few supplies. It's important to keep your feeders clean so your hummers don't get sick.
    Hummingbird supplies we use:
    Cylindrical feeder: amzn.to/35GHd4b
    Disk-shaped feeder: amzn.to/2zcEDXA
    Large, 9-in cleaning brush: amzn.to/3fq1foa
    Small brushes, 3-pack: amzn.to/2A6dTbJ
In case this is your 1st time watching one of our videos, we're filming a daily video journal. We want to share how we're gardening and spending our time throughout this Covid-19 quarantine while we shelter-in-place to combat the coronavirus. As gardeners, podcasters, and small business owners, we felt it was important to chronicle this experience.
Follow along with our daily Quarantined Gardeners journal to see what we're doing and get ideas for your own garden because gardening is not canceled.

Please remember to clean your feeders every 3 to 4 days, especially in the summer months.

Why are you using dish soap? I thought dish soap is very toxic to birds?

experts say don't use soap, to use vinegar or bleach.

Hi Al! 👋 Thanks for being here and commenting! Soap is ok to use, but the vinegar would be great too. We haven't used bleach to clean ours as we are concerned about any ill effects it could have on our lovely visitors with any unknown residual chemical. If you find, though, that vinegar or bleach works for you, then go with what works and enjoy each humming visitor you have. They are fabulous to have in any yard. 😃

It should actually be 4 cups water to 1 cup sugar.

Hi Coby! 👋 Thanks for watching. The ratio you are suggesting is actually the same one we used. It's just in larger volumes. 4 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar is a 4 to 1 ratio, as is what we mixed, 1 cup water to 1/4 cup sugar. It's just your ratio would be for a larger amount of sugar water. Our feeder only holds a cup at a time. Thanks for commenting! 😃

Did I miss it or did you mention that the feeders need to be cleaned at least once per week?

Hi Antje! 👋 Yes, they do need to be cleaned weekly, if not more frequently in the summer months! Thanks for watching!
